Garlic for free (well almost).

Advantages: Cheap and easy to grow
Disadvantages: Smelly breath

...The proper name for garlic is Allium sativum and it is part of the onion family. The word garlic comes from the old German word garlaeac, which means 'spear leek'. The gar means spear and refers to the pointy leaves and lic means leek, which is another member of the onion family. Garlic is a bulb which, when mature, has segments called cloves and these are held together with a white papery skin. Garlic has been grown for centuries both for its culinary attributes and for its medicinal properties. It is thought to help prevent heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels, to have anti biotic properties and anti oxidant properties, i.e. protecting the body from those harmful free radicals. Some even claim that eating it raw is good for warding off mosquitoes, but it may also deter all but your best friends too. Garlic is truly...

Hmm Roasted Garlic

Advantages: Very good for your health
Disadvantages: Bad breath

...Back again with probably one of the most used herbs in the cooking world - Garlic The amount of time I hear people say I hate Garlic and won't cook with it, or I don't like the smell of it. They are so ignorant they don't even know it's used in most everyday things ranging from peri-peri sauce to ready meals and in lots of tinned food like soups etc. How can you not love the smell of roasted garlic :) As you may be able to tell I love garlic and I must go through a clump a week, its great with a massive amount of different foods, just don't use to much of it. This is where people probably make the mistake; too much Garlic can taint the food and kill the flavour of the meat. Quite a bit of information about the Garlic coming up so hear goes. Garlic - Allium sativum ***The Plant*** Garlic also goes by the names...

Garlic - Bad Smell of Success

Advantages: Seems to alleviate a host of ailments.
Disadvantages: Causes odour, some may be intolerant to it.

...Much seems to have been written about garlic being good for the heart, cholesterol, circulation and a host of other conditions, but I thought I would add my "two-pence-worth" based on my experience of this pungent little herb. To begin with, I must say that I have never found any benefit in taking garlic supplements, whether or not they were of the odourless variety. But I definitely have found fresh garlic bulbs to make a difference to the state of my health. Before I go any further, I would like to advise readers with medical conditions to always visit their doctor to get a proper diagnosis and only self-medicate with the appropriate medical approval. Some people have also been found to be intolerant to garlic and experienced contact dermatitis on the skin and migraine headaches. I am no expert and what follows is...

Garlic, not boring but nice.

Advantages: Versatile.
Disadvantages: Most people hate the smell

...It doesn't matter if you love it or hate it. Garlic can do something good for you. There can't be many plants that are so versatile. Garlic belongs to the same family group as onions, chives, tulips and lilies and it's been with us a long time. Evidence of its existence has been found in caves that were lived in 10,000 years ago and the first written reference, on a clay tablet, is dated from 3,000 BC. It seems that ancient civilisations had a good understanding of the many varied uses of the herb. It was widely used in remedies and has even been used as currency. Slaves building the pyramids were given garlic in their rations as it was believed it would keep up their strength. Roman and Greek physicians recommended garlic for use against infections, cancer, leprosy, heart problems and dozens of other ailments and illnesses...

Be Smart! With Smart Price Garlic Bread.

Advantages: Very reasonable in price, easy to cook.
Disadvantages: Could have been stronger inn flavour

...Review of Asda Smart Price Garlic Bread. The Product This review covers garlic bread from the Asda economy budget range, known as Smart Price. Along with many other supermarkets budget lines, Asda's Smart Price is a range of lower priced, simply packaged basic items. As I am restricted to a tight budget nowadays, I have been buying more and more products from supermarket own ranges. All my family enjoy garlic bread, we tend to eat it with a wide assortment of meals, my own favourite is a bowl of home made vegetarian pasta and a couple of slices of garlic bread...Yum! Asda's Smart Price garlic bread is a baguette shaped white loaf filled with garlic butter. Packaging The 170g frozen garlic baguette comes in the instantly recognisable Asda Smart Price uniform of a basic green and white packaging. The product description...

Mountain Language

Advantages: Clear and important political message
Disadvantages: Direct, dim, and disturbing

...Mountain Language (1988) By Harold Pinter (1930- ) Mountain Language is a very short one-act play by the English playwright Harold Pinter. The first scene shows a young woman and an elderly woman as they go to visit one of their relatives who was accused of speaking the forbidden mountain language. The older woman was bitten by one of the dogs in the prison, and yet the officer and sergeant torture her and her companion with stupid questions and harass the latter sexually. We see in the second scene that the elderly woman was in the prison to visit her son. The woman tries to talk to her son with the mountain language she is used to, for she doesn't know the capital language, yet the officer starts jabbing her with a stick. Still, she manages to tell her son that his wife and three kids are waiting for him. In the third scene...

How to Grow Garlic

Advantages: Really very easy to grow, and a fun project for kids.
Disadvantages: Not many, some people don't like the odor.

..."If everybody ate garlic, Then nobody would find it objectionable." French Peasant–Unknown Did you know garlic is classified as an herb? My dictionary defines an herb as "A plant or plant part valued for its medicinal, savory, or aromatic properties." So, garlic, and many other plants are really herbs! Whatever you call it, garlic is an incredibly popular flavoring for all sorts of dishes. Growing garlic is really very easy. If you love "the stinking rose," you'll love growing your own fresh garlic! Where to Plant Your Garlic Garlic loves a rich, very well-drained soil. It's a perennial (which means the plant doesn't die over the winter, and will return in the spring), but in most climates, it is treated like an annual. (Which means it's grown anew every year.) Garlic can be grown from seed, but most people plant...

Budget Garlic bread, great value

Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -

...Garlic Bread is one of my favourite accompaniments to pasta , pizza, or salad . I've been trying to economise, which mainly means that instead of buying Asda own brand, I'm trying, where I can to step down to the smartprice brand - the cheapest they offer- in order to make my money go further . This frozen baguette cost me 36p, which, considering Asda do a 2 pack of their own brand for 98p, would save me 26 pence if I purchased two - not a huge saving, but a saving none the less . Its roughly the same size too, although perhaps slightly less plump, and is divided into nine slices (7 real slices, and 2 ends ) The packaging, like most of the Smart Price products, is a plain white with green writing - nothing to write home about, but it does make it easy to find the smart price items amongst all the others . Cooking this is simple...

Can you smell garlic?

Advantages: easy to use
Disadvantages: expensive

...A few months ago I went to a Pampered Chef evening which a friend of mine was hosting. These are fun evenings where a Pampered Chef presenter will prepare and cook some dishes for the hostess and her guests and while doing so show off many of the products in the Pampered Chef range, in the hope of course that you will be tempted to buy them. A lot of my friends had really raved about the Pampered Chef garlic press, and not seeing anything else that took my fancy, I thought I would try one of these. Now I guess the most noticeable thing about it is that it is not cheap. In fact it costs a whacking £17 which is really quite a lot considering that you can buy a perfectly respectable garlic press in John Lewis for only £5. 'She must be mad,' I can hear you thinking, but this product was really described as the 'bees knees' of garlic...

DIY Garlic

Advantages: Easy and undemanding
Disadvantages: Don't overwater or underwater!

...Garlic is easily grown from individual cloves, just like onions or shallots. You don't even need a windowbox, never mind a garden, for it will grow in a pot on a sunny windowsill. However, beware using garlic from the supermarket shelf - most commercially grown garlic is treated with growth-regulating chemicals which will inhibit re-growth (although you may be lucky!). Best to buy garlic as sets from the garden centre or one of the many good seed catalogues. But if you really want to do your own thing with the supermarket stuff, buy organic garlic and try growing that. It should be untreated and theoretically pure as the driven snow....
