Can you smell garlic?

Advantages: easy to use
Disadvantages: expensive

...A few months ago I went to a Pampered Chef evening which a friend of mine was hosting. These are fun evenings where a Pampered Chef presenter will prepare and cook some dishes for the hostess and her guests and while doing so show off many of the products in the Pampered Chef range, in the hope of course that you will be tempted to buy them. A lot of my friends had really raved about the Pampered Chef garlic press, and not seeing anything else that took my fancy, I thought I would try one of these. Now I guess the most noticeable thing about it is that it is not cheap. In fact it costs a whacking £17 which is really quite a lot considering that you can buy a perfectly respectable garlic press in John Lewis for only £5. 'She must be mad,' I can hear you thinking, but this product was really described as the 'bees knees' of garlic...

Garlic for free (well almost).

Advantages: Cheap and easy to grow
Disadvantages: Smelly breath

...The proper name for garlic is Allium sativum and it is part of the onion family. The word garlic comes from the old German word garlaeac, which means 'spear leek'. The gar means spear and refers to the pointy leaves and lic means leek, which is another member of the onion family. Garlic is a bulb which, when mature, has segments called cloves and these are held together with a white papery skin. Garlic has been grown for centuries both for its culinary attributes and for its medicinal properties. It is thought to help prevent heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels, to have anti biotic properties and anti oxidant properties, i.e. protecting the body from those harmful free radicals. Some even claim that eating it raw is good for warding off mosquitoes, but it may also deter all but your best friends too. Garlic is truly...

The FIRST Utensil You Should Buy

Advantages: Perfect crushed garlic every time
Disadvantages: Holes tend to get clogged if not cleaned right away

...It doesn't matter which garlic press you get, but I sincerely believe that this should be the first kitchen utensil you buy. I have a Zyliss SUSI garlic press (www.zyliss.com) which I purchased in 1975 in a store in Chicago! With all my moves and relocating, I've never lost this item, and I use it ALL the time. This product and company are still both going strong, and I've seen it used by many chefs on cooking shows all over the world (including your own "The Naked Chef" and other UK shows). I've seen this same press in almost every kitchen store in the UK that I've visited. I guess there's no stopping a good thing. My garlic press is a simple metal press that has a swing-hammer device that flips into the bowl to crush the garlic and flips out of the way for cleaning. It has no special attachments like different inserts...

Crushing cloves

Advantages: Inexpensive, easy to use, works well
Disadvantages: Pricier ones can break, bits of garlic can get stuck

...For years I prepared garlic using a chopping board and a sharp knife, first slicing thinly in one direction, then the other. After making pieces as small as possible, I squashed them on a saucer, with the bowl of a tablespoon. In theory, this brings the juices out. In practice, it spattered bits of garlic all over the work surface. I found the whole process so time-consuming and annoying that I tended to buy ready-chopped dried garlic instead. But the taste of dried garlic simply doesn't compare to that of fresh. Besides, it's a lot more expensive. I became more and more aware of the various health benefits of fresh garlic, and decided that there had to be a better way of dealing with the cloves. So I was delighted to learn about a simple tool called a garlic press. * Description * A garlic press has a similar...

Hmm Roasted Garlic

Advantages: Very good for your health
Disadvantages: Bad breath

...Back again with probably one of the most used herbs in the cooking world - Garlic The amount of time I hear people say I hate Garlic and won't cook with it, or I don't like the smell of it. They are so ignorant they don't even know it's used in most everyday things ranging from peri-peri sauce to ready meals and in lots of tinned food like soups etc. How can you not love the smell of roasted garlic :) As you may be able to tell I love garlic and I must go through a clump a week, its great with a massive amount of different foods, just don't use to much of it. This is where people probably make the mistake; too much Garlic can taint the food and kill the flavour of the meat. Quite a bit of information about the Garlic coming up so hear goes. Garlic - Allium sativum ***The Plant*** Garlic also goes by the names...

The best piece of kitchen equipment I own.

Advantages: Easy to use, no need to peel garlic, easy to clean.
Disadvantages: You have to remember to wash/soak it straight away or the garlic sticks.

...(This is about the zyliss garlic press). Now that may seem like one heck of a thing to say about a garlic press of all things. But this really is a fantastic purchase. I bought mine from Lakeland limited about 4 years ago when we moved into our first flat and had my first real kitchen. I love cooking so I wanted to get some good quality kitchen things as I knew I would be using them alot. How much will this cost me? As I said I bought mine from Lakeland limited and having just checked they cost £8.95p at the moment. Lakeland do charge £2.95p for delivery (free for orders over £40 which anyone who has used Lakeland knows isn't difficult as they have great stuff). I don't know where else you can buy this I am afraid. What am I looking for? It is dull silver in colour and is very similar in shape to any other garlic press. It...

Garlic - Bad Smell of Success

Advantages: Seems to alleviate a host of ailments.
Disadvantages: Causes odour, some may be intolerant to it.

...Much seems to have been written about garlic being good for the heart, cholesterol, circulation and a host of other conditions, but I thought I would add my "two-pence-worth" based on my experience of this pungent little herb. To begin with, I must say that I have never found any benefit in taking garlic supplements, whether or not they were of the odourless variety. But I definitely have found fresh garlic bulbs to make a difference to the state of my health. Before I go any further, I would like to advise readers with medical conditions to always visit their doctor to get a proper diagnosis and only self-medicate with the appropriate medical approval. Some people have also been found to be intolerant to garlic and experienced contact dermatitis on the skin and migraine headaches. I am no expert and what follows is...

Press on ........

Advantages: Quicker, easier and no aching back!
Disadvantages: Takes up more room than an iron

...I was in need of a new iron. Not something for which I really wanted to shop as I had been perfectly satisfied with the one I had. The problem was that the cable had become rather worn and I was beginning to feel that it was dangerous. Apart from this I was never comfortable with the ironing board and consequently the ironing became a chore to be put off as long as possible! In fact, not ALL of the ironing was a chore - some I quite enjoyed - some got put back time and again until desperation set in and I HAD to get it done. This was usually bed-linen. Whilst I realise that a lot of people don't bother ironing bed-linen these days, I was brought up to expect smooth well ironed sheets so they HAD to be ironed! I had often looked at presses and thought it would be nice to be able to afford one of those. However, they...

Garlic, not boring but nice.

Advantages: Versatile.
Disadvantages: Most people hate the smell

...It doesn't matter if you love it or hate it. Garlic can do something good for you. There can't be many plants that are so versatile. Garlic belongs to the same family group as onions, chives, tulips and lilies and it's been with us a long time. Evidence of its existence has been found in caves that were lived in 10,000 years ago and the first written reference, on a clay tablet, is dated from 3,000 BC. It seems that ancient civilisations had a good understanding of the many varied uses of the herb. It was widely used in remedies and has even been used as currency. Slaves building the pyramids were given garlic in their rations as it was believed it would keep up their strength. Roman and Greek physicians recommended garlic for use against infections, cancer, leprosy, heart problems and dozens of other ailments and illnesses...

PURE PRESSED PERFECTION

Advantages: even flawless perfect coverage
Disadvantages: price

...Some foundations which I wear really do play havoc with my skin; some of them are too oily and look really bad when I apply them, some give me dry skin and others block my pores and give me spots. I have lost count on the amount of money which I have wasted on foundations over the years, if I don't like the look of it when I apply it or I find that it dries or irritates my skin them I'll throw it in the bin straight away regardless of the amount of money which it cost me. On one occasion I spent £30 on a foundation which I only bought because I had heard that it was really good, only to throw it in the bin after three uses because it made my skin look all dry and blotchy. I had almost given up hope of finding the perfect foundation for my skin until my mums friend recommended Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Base to me. Albeit it is...
