Innaccurate with poor database
Review of Garmin NÜVI 200 by
Biffo28
Advantages: Resonable cheap
Disadvantages: Innaccurate with poor database
...Agree with most of what the previous reviewer said but he left out a couple of very important drawbacks.
1. It really isn't very accurate when you take it out of town, navigating for the first time to our friends country house it told us we had arrived approx a quarter of a mile from the actual destination. (using postcode with house number entry) This failing was repeated many times travelling to other countryside destinations.
2. its database of hotels/bars/resaurants/interesting sites etc doesn't contain even half of the actual destinations that exist in the real world.
I have been told this is not Garmins problem but is caused by the maps they are forced to use?
In terms of a recommendation, given the opportunity i WOULDN'T have bought this item had i been aware of its ACTUAL performance....

A fool and his money buy Garmin
Review of Garmin Streetpilot 2620 by
phoenixbbs
Advantages: Literally plug in and go
Disadvantages: Expensive, and Garmin has a strange map sale policy
...on a PC and used on another Garmin GPS unit for free, and it has all the functionality of the 2620.
The Garmin 2620 costs over £900 from many dealers, has a hard drive that isn't regarded as being terribly reliable, and has no map CDs - you can NOT install the software on a PC to pre-plan trips, and you can NOT use them with another Garmin GPS unit.
On the map availability issue, you *can* buy maps for the UK (you have to buy them as a complete set for europe), but you *HAVE* to import them from a US dealer. Garmin state that this is to stop grey imports. Go figure.
US customers do not have to import the equivalent maps from outside of the US, so this is obviously a "marketing" ploy to milk more cash from customers from other countries.
The cost of european maps is typically over £200 whereas you can buy a Garmin GPS18 receiver complete...

Garmin Nuvi 200w Sat Nav System
Review of Garmin nuvi 200W by
danmclovin
Advantages: Easy to use, does what it's suppsed to do!
Disadvantages: Satellite pairing takes ages, no mains charger!
...of the past, much like tv's. After extensive researching, price comparison and review reading, I came across the Garmin Nuvi 200w, and a sat nav system that seemed to impress greatly, so i decided to take the plunge and bought one.
Much like many of the reviews I had read on the Nuvi 200w, my first impressions of it were very good. I bought the system off the Littlewoods website, as it had been reduced in a seasonal sale that they were having. This meant that the system was on offer for around £30 less than on any other reputable site that I could find it on. The product was well packaged, securely and compactly fitted to an inner cardboard shelf, that meant that the sat nav was unable to move or rattle within the box, therefor limiting the chance of damage during postal delivery to a minimum. Included in the box was the Nuvi 200w sat nav system...

Easy to use, easy to see, easy to love GPS
Review of Garmin nüvi 200W by
feggie
Advantages: Great price, effortless to use
Disadvantages: none, really
...After doing a lot of online research, I decided to get the Garmin nuvi 200W. The "W" stands for widescreen. It has the exact features ass the Nuvi 200, but a larger screen. We were in Disneyworld, (you can buy additional countries files, to add to your system), and wanted to go to a Build-a-bear store. Not only did it find the store, but give us wonderful directions, that saved us miles over they way we thought we wanted to go. The "voice" is easy to understand. The touch screen is very responsive and easy to use. I am not a "techie", and worried I would have trouble learning how to use this. It is so easy, a child could use it. The graphics are bright. You can buy a cable on Ebay very inexpensively, that allows you to download graphics for free, and also programs you can buy. I don't know why the cable isn't included...

Garmin StreetPilot I3
Review of Garmin Streetpilot I 3 by
Scuzzy1965
Advantages: Simple to use, convenient, compact
Disadvantages: Takes time to lock on signals
...What an item. After buying my Garmin StreetPilot I3 I was up and running withing minutes. It is an amazing piece of kit.
The support from Garmin has been exceptional and software updates are sent to me when they are available.
The only downside that I can mention is that when not using back-up batteries it does take a little longer to 'lock on' to the satellite signals. However having said that, if that is all that there is to complain about then thats a small disadvantage.
I use my street pilot 7-8 hours a day, 5 days a week. It is unobtrusive, simple to use and easy to update. I also use it more for keeping an eye on my speed. When not actually navigating the display shows what speed you are doing, this can be in MPH or KPH.
All in all, well done garmin...

Never get lost again
Review of Garmin Streetpilot I 3 by
marcellep
Advantages: Cost, Style, Looks,
Disadvantages: None as yet
...I decided a few months back that I wanted sat nav for my new 7 seater car that I was planning on buying this year.
**Searching**
I search the net and of course the good old Argos book to see what was available and at what price. I think it is very important that you set a budget at a very early stage as you can easily get drawn in to the more expensive ones to which are over your budget. I searched many sites including eBay, Amazon, Argos, and general sites. I set myself a limit of £200 which I thought was high enough to get a decent satellite navigation system that suited me. In the end I decided on either the Garmin or Navman which to be honest I had never heard of any of these. I finally decided on the Garmin just due to the positive reviews that I had read on many sites. Time to research…….
**Garmin! Who are Garmin? **
Garmin...

Garmin NÜVI 200 - cheap but cheerful SatNav
Review of Garmin NÜVI 200 by
ilaskey
Advantages: price, maps, points of interest, speed camera warnings
Disadvantages: extra maps/updates pricy
...Just prior to going on holiday this year we decided to treat ourselves to a SatNav. Most of the bells & whistles the more pricy units have wasn't of interest to us, we just wanted something basic. My wife had used a TomTom in someone else's car so we wandered down to Halfords with something similar in mind.
Having spent half an hour perusing about 20 different units none of which stood out, we grabbed a passing salesbod and asked for help. He immedietly pointed to the Garmin and rattled off a dozen reasons why, most of which blurred into a realisation that the stickers that showed the features on each unit were lying i.e. he said it had post code navigation, the stickers said not. Anyway, time was moving on so we grabbed one and paid the £165 it cost at the time.
Having got home, the first thing I did was go online and check other...

Rugged excellent outdoor GPS unit Garmin Geko 201
Review of Garmin Geko 201 by
GriffMedia
Advantages: rugged, waterproof, reliable, accurate
Disadvantages: none
...My wife and i have a hobby called Geocaching and our Garmin Geko 201 is invaluable to us. Our hobby involves downloading co-ordinates to the PC, which we can then transfer to the Garmin via a serial cable. You can of course input them manually.
My advice is to read the manual carefully as it may not be the most obvious piece of kit to use. (isn't that what manuals are for? ) Once you get used to it it is a very simple unit to use.
It is rugged, waterproof and has a good battery life. I believe it is even possible to link to some mobile phones such as Smartphones but i have not tried?
It has a breadcrumb feature so that you can retrace your step, current speed, average speed, distance covered and many more useful features that you will find handy, but;
The most important thing is that it is accurate. We have to find objects the size...

Garmin forerunner 305 review
Review of Garmin Forerunner 305 12 channel GPS receiver by
denz1968
Advantages: Excellent training aid for heartrate, pace, speed monitoring and recording
Disadvantages: Altimeter not 100% correct
...An excellent training aid. This item gives you heartrate, speed, time taken, lap times, for running, biking, and other sports. This can be downloaded to the included software as your training log and then uploaded to websites such as Google earth where you can view your training mapped against satellite images.
I aren't too sure of the accuracy of the altimeter part of the satellite navigation product, but that does not bother my training too much. Another good feature is that on the website mapmyrun.com you can save your run course that you created and upload it to your Garmin and then train against the training pace buddy, with the Garmin telling you if you are behind or in front of the pace that you set. Also if you wander off the course the Garmin will warn you that you have strayed away from the intended path.
Overall a must...
