Garmin eTrex Legend HCx

Advantages: Tough, compact, waterproof, accurate, cheaper than bike specific gps
Disadvantages: Expensive maps, Poor bike handlebar mount, slow data transfer

...This is a tough, well designed and compact handheld gps device. Personally I use this for mountain biking, with the GB Topographic map, and find that it accomplishes what I need it to do very well and is extremely accurate. It has a microSD slot which is great, I have a 2gb card and you can easily fit the whole of the GB topo map onto it. Ok so the road routing may not be great but I did not even consider using it in the car when I ordered it. However it does a perfectly acceptable job of navigating for me, although It does lack features of a dedicated sat nav. It is waterproof so ideal for outdoor use, this is especially handy on the bike. It doesn't float but I don't intend on riding through anything that deep!! It is bluechart compatible so thats another use for it if you purchase the marine maps, which I have and the detail is great...

...The etrex is a base model GPS reciever designed for walkers, cyclists and other outdoor adventurers. I have had mine for 3 years it still works and they're still making the same one so it must be good! The screen is large, monocrome and is backlit although this reduces the life of the two AA batteries quite significantly. This screen is easy to read and you can also adjust the contrast. The casing is yellow with rubber sides and back. This seems very rugged and hard to break. There is a plug on the back to connect to a PC or PDA. This allows you to upload routes, tracks or waypoints from mapping software onto the GPS. The route memory allows 50 different points along the route. Hiking fun! Till you're lost! Never with eTrex

...many reviews on Ciao). After advice from assistants and internet research, I decided on the Garmin eTrex Summit. Of course the eTrex Summit can be used for more than just geocaching. It is intended for long distance walkers of hilly or mountainous terrain. It incorporates an electronic compass to aid navigation and an in-built barometric altimeter. It can store up to 20 routes and up to 500 waypoints. The eTrex Summit weighs just 5.3 ounces - definitely light in weight. It is shaped rather like a mobile phone and comes with a wrist strap making it very easy to carry. It is waterproof. Garmin claim that the unit can be safely submersed to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Garmin Etrex Vista after 2 years hard use...

Advantages: Lightweight, solid, reliable and accurate
Disadvantages: Used mine extensively for 2 years and honestly cannot fault.

...has many features I though I would never use, but I have ended up using it to its full extent. The internal digital compass and altitude meter also compliments the GPS data superby (and accurately), making the unit ideal for just about all uses imaginable. After much consideration I cannot fault this unit at all (and i'm not associated with its sales) and would recommend it as a highly reliable unit that can be trusted in any situation. Garmin obviously know their stuff and have done their customer research in designing this model....

I'd be lost without it!

Advantages: Easy to use, with good battery life and a useful base map
Disadvantages: Loses the signal in woods

I Don't Know Where I'd be Without it!

Advantages: Relatively cheap, robust, European basemap, small

.... The way around this is to have atomic clocks in each of the satellittes but to have a normal quartz clock in the reciever which can be constantly reset. The receiver is constantly getting the correct time value from the satellitte signals. The receiver is effectively gettin atomic clock accuracy for free! ::: The eTrex Legend (Re-join here if you skipped the How it works section) ::: When people talk of "a gps" they are normally refering to a global positioning system reciever, or gpsr. The eTrex Legend is one such GPS receiver, however there are infact hundreds on the market. The eTrex Legend is cased in a blue transparent case which looks extremely attractive. The rubber seals on the sides and back give it tremendous ruggedness and ensure that it is totally waterproof (however, I have not tested this claim). The Legend is 5.1cm wide...

Garmin Nuvi 250 Satnav (/GPS)

Advantages: Touch-screen, USB, Card-slot, Mapsource compatability
Disadvantages: Bad maps, immediate next turn direction, no variable POI proximity,

...(if you register your serial number you get 30 days to order a free map update - mine is on order so will redo this review if it fixes the problems). You can also download a Points-Of-Interest (POI) uploader so you can take advantage of all the POI databases out there for TomTom (although they have to be converted to CSV but this was a painless process using free online services). You can also link the device to Garmins mapsource software and this is where it gets interesting. The device can be set to car/bike or pedestrian mode and since Mapsource can upload waypoints you have a satnav which can also double as a GPS which makes it sort of usable for Geocaching etc. The only problem with this is when you use the zoom functions, it sometimes redraws the map without the POI's. After extensive researching, price comparison and review reading, I came across the Garmin Nuvi 200w, and a sat nav system that seemed to impress greatly, so i decided to take the plunge and bought one. Much like many of the reviews I had read on the Nuvi 200w, my first impressions of it were very good. I bought the system off the Littlewoods website, as it had been reduced in a seasonal sale that they were having. This meant that the system was on offer for around £30 less than on any other reputable site that I could find it on. The product was well packaged, securely and compactly fitted to an inner cardboard shelf, that meant that the sat nav was unable to move or rattle within the box, therefor limiting the chance of damage during postal delivery to a minimum.
