TomTom Western Europe, let Jane take the strain.

Advantages: Stress free travelling, comprehensive, clear instructions, cheap
Disadvantages: Some very minor glitches in confusing bends with turns

...I recently reviewed the TomTom one, which we bought with the Western Europe maps, and I have been waiting to put Jane (our name, after the voice) through her paces in rural France. As with all TomTom maps, easy to see, easy to use, easy to understand, and easy to update. Absolutely fantastic, I have no idea how we ever coped without her/it. From getting off the ferry, the map/navigation was spot on, good clear instructions, in plenty of time, and the first time I have ever got through Paris without a hitch. To give you an idea of how good, we bought a local map of where we were going on the Limousin/Perigord borders, that did not have the town we were staying in (I call it a town loosely) as it was so small, no problem for TomTom, straight there, which was welcome after 7 hours of driving. ...(if you register your serial number you get 30 days to order a free map update - mine is on order so will redo this review if it fixes the problems). You can also download a Points-Of-Interest (POI) uploader so you can take advantage of all the POI databases out there for TomTom (although they have to be converted to CSV but this was a painless process using free online services). You can also link the device to Garmins mapsource software and this is where it gets interesting. The device can be set to car/bike or pedestrian mode and since Mapsource can upload waypoints you have a satnav which can also double as a GPS which makes it sort of usable for Geocaching etc. The only problem with this is when you use the zoom functions, it sometimes redraws the map without the POI's. ...Having used a Tom Tom Go 700 for a number of years, I decided to update the maps of Western Europe. Tom Tom uses software called Tom Tom Home which is used to download the updated maps. Having connected Tom Tom Go 700 to my PC, via a USB cable, it was a simple matter of clicling on the relevant icon on the Home Software, paying for the maps, and downloading them over the internet. Payment was straight forward. It is undertaken electronically either by credit or debit card, and the down load commenced. Because of the size of the map file, it took a little time to download (I do have broadband running at 8mb band width, so I suppose a lesser bandwith will take longer. Use of the system is simplicity itself. You are given a choice of country, and then you select address, or point of interest....

The Garmin Gps 72 is a very dependable unit i use another brand on my boat while working and i have the gp 72 beside it and have found it to be a better unit allround, so i hear you all say, well this is why i mentioned my other unit, the other ones costs nearly £700 and is a fixed unit, with a smaller display. My gp 72 cost me £130 and is handheld and portable, also with the correct lead available from Garmin you can download and update data from your computer or laptop. I use mine for work when i am called out for the HM Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team that i am a member of and found it is very accurate and dependable. No slip shod slap dash sloppy sat nav . . .

...... Garmin was one of the GPS devices I looked at when deciding which sat nav to go for. I actually went for the TomTom. As I compared several models I feel I am qualified to write a review on this Sat Nav. Garmin is well known for Satnav, but they also make Mobile phones, Laptops, PDAs, 2 way radios, and even dog tracking systems. They do echo sounders for boats, as well as chartplotters, fishfinders, and even radar sets. They are a "new" company (1989) and have a stong foothold in the navigation market. Garmin call this a personal travel assistant, this is an entry level job, but I tend to think that is just a marketing trick to make you want the next model. The device comes already pre-loaded with maps covering the whole of Europe. It has the usual touch screen and is of course very slim. The database is already loaded...

You need tom-toms to find your way

Advantages: Large clear menu for touchscreen. Quick setup to navigate to postcodes. Clear driving instruction.
Disadvantages: Poor POIs, Lack of route preview. Missing villages. No cam preview found.

...On the basis of good reviews I bought Navigator 6 Western Europe (Nav 6) for my PDA to replace an ageing Miomap programme. Having removed the Miomap programme the TomTom Nav 6 installed quickly and easily and after selecting a few options, was up and running. The selection of only 2 UK voices was very disappointing, and neither really appealed. Navigating to a post code is simple to set up, but I could not preview the route until the unit connected to satellites. I had to exit the navigation screen an select a view map icon to see anything. Typing in a town name is predictive, letting you select a town really easily. Menu navigation is easy with nice large icons and a maximum of 6 to a screen. Points of information were most frustrating with, for example, a hotel in Norwich I wanted to visit being listed only as a restaurant. Most...
