You can also download a Points-Of-Interest (POI) uploader so you can take advantage of all the POI databases out there for TomTom (although they have to be converted to CSV but this was a painless process using free online services). You can also link the device to Garmins mapsource software and this is where it gets interesting. The device can be set to car/bike or pedestrian mode and since Mapsource can upload waypoints you have a satnav which can also double as a GPS which makes it sort of usable for Geocaching etc. The only problem with this is when you use the zoom functions, it sometimes redraws the map without the POI's. Our hobby involves downloading co-ordinates to the PC, which we can then transfer to the Garmin via a serial cable. You can of course input them manually. My advice is to read the manual carefully as it may not be the most obvious piece of kit to use. (isn't that what manuals are for? ) Once you get used to it it is a very simple unit to use. It is rugged, waterproof and has a good battery life. I believe it is even possible to link to some mobile phones such as Smartphones but i have not tried? It has a breadcrumb feature so that you can retrace your step, current speed, average speed, distance covered and many more useful features that you will find handy, but; The most important thing is that it is accurate. As I compared several models I feel I am qualified to write a review on this Sat Nav. Garmin is well known for Satnav, but they also make Mobile phones, Laptops, PDAs, 2 way radios, and even dog tracking systems. They do echo sounders for boats, as well as chartplotters, fishfinders, and even radar sets. They are a "new" company (1989) and have a stong foothold in the navigation market. Garmin call this a personal travel assistant, this is an entry level job, but I tend to think that is just a marketing trick to make you want the next model. The device comes already pre-loaded with maps covering the whole of Europe. It has the usual touch screen and is of course very slim. The database is already loaded...

Get There With A Garmin 760

...was still more to be found out from reading the instruction manual. It is well laid out text that described the features and settings perfectly. It also has sections on problem solving all though I did not have any problems with mine so did not need to use this section. It is a really reliable device that I use almost daily now it does occasionally loose a bit of the road I rang and asked Garmin about this and they said they do have updates and that sometimes new roads are built before they get chance to update their systems. The device is quick to start but some of the software can take some time to load all though it does eventually work and runs very well and accurately. There is also an in built safety camera feature with the Garmin Nuvi 760 Sat Nav which warns you in plenty of time about fixed speed cameras and mobile speed van...

It does not have the ability to "tell" you where to go by voice but it does show you what turnings to take on a small map. At first glance the Edge 705 looks really stylish and impressive.
