Get Safely from A to B with Garmin nuvi 1340

Advantages: Not as annoying as I thought
Disadvantages: Pricey

...Why I Bought It I finally gave in a traded my AA route finder notes (which always got me from A to B) for a Garmin nuvi 1340. I have to admit that these things annoy me so much, shouting directions at you every 5 seconds, but I thought I ought to at least try to get with the 21st century, plus everyone I know as one, so they can?t be that bad can they? I managed to pick mine up for £139 from Pixmania, which was a bargain, as I?d seen one in my local Halford store whilst shopping for oil again! (but that?s another story) for £179! Just proving its worth shopping around. Being a girlie the first thing that attracted me to this was its slender build (I know I know!). Its only 15mm thick and therefore isn?t too bulky to pop into the handbag when I?ve arrived at my destination and its quite light too ? double bonus. The 1340 model...

Garmin Nuvi 200w Sat Nav System

Advantages: Easy to use, does what it's suppsed to do!
Disadvantages: Satellite pairing takes ages, no mains charger!

I have had no previous experience with sat nav systems, however I found the Nuvi 200w to be extremely easy to use and very user friendly. It does have a few minor faults, with it's long satellite pairing wait, and the lack of a mains charger, however these can be picked up fairly cheaply. Apart from that, I cannot fault the Nuvi 200w. As well as being very stylish, and with a high quality feel, it also does exactly what it's designed to do, which is fundamental, as well as being packed with a wealth of other top features. Garmin Nuvi 610T, perfect every time...

Advantages: Quick, clear, easy to use, multi functions, bluetooth, connects with mobile for hands free

...The Garmin Nuvi 610T is a very good sat nav unit. In the box you receive the unit itself, windscreen mount, charger leads, cd rom, usb pc connecting cable, instruction manual, a dashboard mount and a tmc aerial. On receiving the unit it was incredibly easy to set up. In fact straight from the box its ready to go once you've attached it to the windscreen, it simply takes a few moments to locate satellites and establish where it is. The windscreen mounting bracket is of good quality, the plastic is robust and in 6 months the suction cup hasn't worked loose at all; its still exactly where I placed it initially. You get a decent length of lead on the charging cable that fits into any standard 12V cigarette lighter socket. The tmc lead is also a decent enough length and comes with two suction cups to keep it neatly attached to...

...Edit: My review here is based on the Nuvi-250 (non-widescreen version). I bought one of these recently as my old ipaq-based TomTom is getting more outdated each day and there doesn't seem to be a reasonably-priced way to update it. I have to say I was expecting better. The manual is small because there aren't as many features as you get with TomTom. For example TomTom allows you to set the distance between your POI and it's alert sounding. This Garmin seems to sound the alert at it's own preset distance warning which you can't change from the menu system. It also seems to take a while to find the satellites. We went to our local park on saturday which is about a mile from home and we were practically on the car-park before it locked on. The worst part though was how innacurate the maps seem to be. Sat nav for a bicycle?

Advantages: Effective, efficient and useful - reasonably priced.

The screen is not as sensitive as I would like in an ideal world - though I recognise the difficulty of getting the balance right. My machine did not come with an electric plug charger, just a car-lighter one. As my bike did not come with a lighter or a 12v plug, its battery life limits me to about 4 hours max on the move. No spare batteries are available for replacing or adding to the supplied one. It is a factory fitting job, and I gather it is quite expensive at that. There was no USB cable with mine, and while they are easy to obtain, I think it would be even easier for Garmin to supply one themselves in the box. City Navigator Europe maps are supplied and can be updated online. For obvious reasons they do not cover roads which were only constructed last month...

...... Garmin was one of the GPS devices I looked at when deciding which sat nav to go for. I actually went for the TomTom. As I compared several models I feel I am qualified to write a review on this Sat Nav. Garmin is well known for Satnav, but they also make Mobile phones, Laptops, PDAs, 2 way radios, and even dog tracking systems. They do echo sounders for boats, as well as chartplotters, fishfinders, and even radar sets. They are a "new" company (1989) and have a stong foothold in the navigation market. Garmin call this a personal travel assistant, this is an entry level job, but I tend to think that is just a marketing trick to make you want the next model. The device comes already pre-loaded with maps covering the whole of Europe. It has the usual touch screen and is of course very slim. The database is already loaded...

...suit yourself if you want more than a little blue pyramid,these are a bit limited in veriety at the moment but I go online with it about once a fortnight and theres usually more options available. it has a security feature which requires a pin number entry if you turn this feature on.You need to stand outside to do this as it requires you to lock in a security postion into it as well in case you forget your pin,and it needs to have clear satelite reception.But it's worth it when if stolen or lost it becomes useless to anyone else. I also use it for geocaching (a type of treasure hunting) when I walk my dogs.the battery when charged lasts for up to 8hrs. Theres a link on the Garmin website to this if you want more info. Great if you have active kids to entertain and geocaches are everywhere. Ive found 10 within half an hours walk...
