Gary's Take

Advantages: Great reading
Disadvantages: Would have liked more gossip about him and Robbie's arguments

...I was really looking forward to reading this book to learn about the real man and not just what we were told from the tabloids, I can easily say that I was not disappointed with this book. Gary starts the booki n 2000 and tells about how his life is and what he is up to. He then starts to take us back on a journey from his childhood. He tells us all about his apprenticeship in the working mens clubs in the North and how his family would save up to buy him the latest model of keyboard. He tells how he gets his insperation for song writting which he started at such an early age and how hard it was trying to get his big break. He tells of when he first met Nigel Martin-Smith who was a modelling agent and how he had an idea of starting a boy band. We are told the truth about how Take That actually did get made and it is very suprising to...

Scotts porage oats

Advantages: A nutricious cereal,economical too
Disadvantages: none

...Scott`s porage oats are milled in Cupar,Fife,Scotland and have been since 1888. For as long as I can remember the packet has always had the familiar picture on the front, the poised Highland Shot -putter in the grain field. During the latter part of the 1990`s Scott`s ran a successful advertising campaign featuring the actor Rory McCann. The advert is posted on Youtube if any of you have never seen it. Scott`s oats are rolled thicker and kilned gently to give that individual taste. The oats contain soluble fibre and if they are eaten as part of a healthy diet can lower cholesterol.Oats are also a valuable source of Vitamin B complex, rich in nutrients and help keep blood sugar levels balanced. Porage is a great favourite in our house, but we have different ways of cooking it. My porage is made with half milk, half water, cooked in...

Wonderful Fish at Scott's

Advantages: Gorgeous fish, decor, atmosphere
Disadvantages: None

...If you are in the market for a wonderful fish restaurant in the heart of London then look no further than Scott?s of Mayfair. It was named as the BMW Square meal Restaurant of the Year in 2008 so I was very excited to try it. I had heard lots of things about it too and had seen it in the celebrity pages due to the fact that a number of stars go there for dinner frequently. The restaurant is located at 20 Mount Street, London, W1K 2HE. The nearest tube station is either Green Park or Bond Street so it?s right in the middle of town, a really good location actually. I made a reservation on line quite a few weeks before we wanted to go as I had heard that it books out very early. I actually had to try a number of different dates before I found a time that would accommodate us. In the end I booked a table for 6pm on a Saturday in...

Infected - Scott Sigler

Advantages: Good pace, quite gruesome in parts.
Disadvantages: Not 'deep' enough.

...Infected - Scott Sigler. Please not Ciao....this is not an audio book. 'When you hear the voices it's already too late'. I have to say, I find writing book reviews particularly difficult. There is a thin line between enticing someone with enough plot and information to encourage them to read the book for themselves, and too much plot so that they pretty much don't need to read it. At just over 450 pages this is not too long, in fact I read it in 4 days, as one of my 'holiday books'. The cover was what initially attracted me to the book, and when I turned the book over, the short synopsis and recommendations from other authors persuaded me to purchase. At 3 for two in WH Smiths (or was it Waterstones) I did not need too much persuasion. ~~Genre and background~~ Part sci-fi, part thriller, part conspiracy I guess, well, it...

They weren't Twins & No-one was called Thompson

Advantages: Some great singles
Disadvantages: Some of the lyrics are a tad downbeat

...Looking on Ciao I was rather surprised to find no-one had done a review of these amazing 80's artists so as an 80's child and a very big fan indeed I felt it was my duty to write a review so here it comes. Formed originally in 1977 with a massive 11 members the Thompson Twins (who of course took their name from the bumbling detectives out of artist Herge's Tintin comics) released 3 albums before really breaking big in both the UK & the USA. Into The Gap was their 4th release but the 1st with the "classic" 3 person line-up of Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway. Bailey wrote words and music, Leeway provided percussion (and some backing vocals) and Currie played xylophone and provided backing vocals. On this album all 3 members of the band are given writing credits but Bailey wrote pretty much everything on his own. So whats...

Thompson and Morgan, seedsmen

Advantages: Great range of seeds
Disadvantages: None

...Thompson and Morgan's catalogue (online and print) is interesting and filled with wonderful seeds you can grow. My wife is not keen on buying plants that have already been started. "Where is the fun in that?" she muses. "Don't people know the true joy of growing from seed?" It has to be said that she has a good point and that the Thompson and Morgan website certainly helps her to fulfil her ambition of not buying ready started plants, buy providing a truly magnificent range of seeds that you can plant and thus grow yourself, from scratch. The web site is easy to navigate and has simple, easy to read and easy to understand instructions for even the Internet virgin. There's a cheery introduction by Michael Perry, the specialist project manager, which contains a promise that if you are not satisfied, then Thompson and Morgan will...

The Best of Gary Rhodes

Advantages: We know him and love him
Disadvantages: none!

...Author Introduction Most people are familiar with Gary Rhodes, a top class chef and a regular on television programmes. I have not seen him on television for a while now, so maybe a short introduction is in order. Gary?s love of cooking goes back to his childhood. At the tender age of thirteen, he cooked a special pudding for his family. His passion for cooking led him into a career as a chef, attending a catering college in Broadstairs, Kent, where he became top of his class. Landing a job at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam, his career nearly ended when he was run over by a tram and required brain surgery. Thankfully, he made a recovery, returning to Britain in 1984 to work at the Capital Hotel. He had several jobs and numerous awards. The prestigious Catey award (the caterings equivalent to the Oscars) was awarded to him, for his...

Tilt - Scott Walker

Advantages: incredibly unique music
Disadvantages: perhaps a little too bleak at times

...Blimey - what an album! It's not, however, very likeable. Scott's previous record Climate Of Hunter, for all it's oddities, is still a collection of relatively traditional songs. Tilt isn't. But the opening "Farmer In The City" is still one of the best tracks ever recorded and still, after 12 years and goodness knows how many plays, brings me to the verge of tears at the "Paulo, take me with you..." bit. Amazing. The strings are stunningly powerful. "The Cockfighter" is weird beyond belief, especially the way Scott's voice fractures as he sings "it's a beautiful ni-HIght" which is just freaky. The minute of disturbing scratching noises at the start of the track weirds me out too. A whole new category of music - industrial classical. "Bouncer See Bouncer" goes on way too long before that lovely shaft of light, the orchestra backed...

Zen, and the art of Gary NuNuman

Advantages: Some stunning tracks, it's an incredible effort considering where he came from
Disadvantages: A few dull moments, but I still can't wait for the next one

...OK, you should have all finished doing double takes now. Yes, this is a Gary Numan album and yes it is in the hard rock category (Or at least it should be!!!). It’s all a bit convoluted but basically Gary Numan has transformed himself from the strange little man of electro pop he used to be into a Trent Reznor like electro rock behemoth. And yet who was it who inspired Trent Reznor (Amongst others) to pick up a synth and create what we know now as Nine Inch Nails? Gary Numan of course. So the mentor having duly mentored the pupil has now changed into the image of the former pupil. Very deep, very Zen – very verging on the Karate Kid. The music that Gary NuNuman has created owes a very big debt to Nine Inch Nails, it’s definitely been created from a similar mind set as it mixes dark electronic synth work with fuzzed...

Gary Moore plays Peter Green

Advantages: Peter Greens skill is rediscovered in the form of Gary Moore
Disadvantages: None

...I saw Peter Green & Fleetwood Mac in the late sixties and Gary Moore is the first guitarist that I have heard play his songs, where you could shut your eyes, and be transported back to that concert. This is my experience of Peter Green and also Gary Moore whom I saw play "I loved another woman" at the MEN Manchester. If you love good music albeit the Blues and want to hear it played by actual musicians then "Blues for Greeny" is for you. To honour one of the guitarists he admires Gary Moore has stepped away from his own high class musicianship and produces an album of Peter Green songs six of which can be found on the albums "Fleetwood Mac" and "Mr Wonderful" (see my reviews on these albums, (Early and More Early English Blues) and also puts in some lesser known songs as well as "I need your love so Bad...
