British Gas
Advantages: gas seems fine
Disadvantages: telephone nightmare
...British Gas
I felt I had to write this review after having to deal with this company for the first time and being pretty disappointed. Having moved into a new flat and coming from a flat where all the bills were included in the rent meaning never having to deal with all these companies and now having to set up all the new accounts for things such as electricity, gas and water I found this company particularly tiresome to deal with.
We were meant to phone up on the day we moved in to the new flat and pass over all the readings on the meters and the correct information to set up new accounts and the such like. I had no problems at all when contacting the water supplier and the electricity supplier but when it came to the gas this was more of a problem that I could of dreamed.
After phoning up the main line for British...

British Gas make a complete hash.
Advantages: None that I can think of...oh..they have the word "British" in their name
Disadvantages: Customer Service (lack of), Prices, Attitude...oh everything really
...gas. During a ten-year national conversion programme every appliance in the country was converted from town gas to run on natural gas. Visits were made to 13 millions homes and factories and 34 million individual appliances were converted.
The 1972 Gas Act paved the way for greater centralisation with the creation of the British Gas Corporation. Taking effect in 1973, the 12 old gas boards became regions, responsible for a particular geographical area. New names were given to reflect their new status. For example, North Eastern Gas Board became NEGAS.
The 1986 Gas Act saw the return of the gas industry to the private sector and the company's names changed to British Gas Plc. On 8th December 1986, £9 billion worth of shares were floated on stock markets around the world.
The Government then decided to open the domestic gas market to...

* It's a Gas Gas Gas Man . .
Advantages: A very good cooker.
Disadvantages: Not a lot.
..., and you do not catch yourself on it as the handles are curved. Unfortunately this model comes in boring white or black only, and has the obligatory basic one year guarantee. Many makers now offer more than a single year, usually two at least.
These gas appliances should be fitted by a Corgi registered fitter, and if you ever have an emergency concerning gas, you should ring Transco on 0800 111999
I like this cooker, everything seems easy to use, the two ovens are a practical idea, and save fuel. The appearance of the cooker is very stylish. I must say that this particular model, is no longer being made, so I will not give current prices, however, the ones they do make seem identical to mine.
These cookers are made by Stoves Limited, part of the Glen Dimplex Home Appliances Group.
The Stoves company was established in 1920, and have...

Money burned by British Gas
Advantages: Large company, synergy, many products offered.
Disadvantages: Price hikes, deparments don't talk to each other
...UPDATE 28.11.08
When I wrote the review below, prices had gone up by 50% since January 2008, with British Gas agents profusely blaming rise in oil prices for rises in both Gas and Electricity. Fair point? By July oil was at a record $147 a barrel at its peak. Since then oil has collapsed to a 2 year low of $52 a barrel and still falling, I spoke to British Gas about this -- they say that gas is already in the system paid for at the old prices! On Radio 4's Today program, they continued along this line when pressed about price rising the moment oil goes up, but stubbornly high when oil comes down.
Remember, not a penny has come off gas or electricity - yet when the first wave of oil price rises began in January 2008, gas prices went up by 15% and a further rise of 35% in August. It is now five months on, and British Gas...

British gas
Advantages: NOTHING AT ALL
Disadvantages: everything!
...When I moved into my flat there were two reasons I decided to choose British Gas as my Gas supplier. Firstly there was already a British Gas Pre Payment meter installed, and secondly I chose them because they were a well known name. Well, if only I?d done some research first I could have saved myself a whole lot of bother.
My first problem was actually finding a number to ring to get the supply connected. I tried the Yellow Pages and the Thompson local, but although they had a full page add on the back of the Yellow Pages it was for buying a fireplace, not connecting the gas supply. Never mind I thought, I?ll give it a ring anyway, and maybe they?ll be able to give me the number I need. Anyway, they put me on hold for about 10 minutes and then the woman (sounding very huffy) gave me the number I needed.
So I rang the number...

British Gas
Advantages: nationally known company
Disadvantages: no sense of cutomer service or reward for loyal customers
...well british gas what can i say!
i have been a british gas customer for 8 years now. i have a 2 bedroomed house and 2 children. i have a gas combi boiler but no gas fire and no gas hob ( so the only time i use gas is for hot water and heating) my payments for gas and electricity have been roughly the same for years now. i paid approx 25 for gas and 36 for electric ( a month by direct debit) i always get a rebate in the summer on both ( roughly £30) so i was more than happy with this account, i never missed a payment and never had any trouble.
well recently i was alarmed to receive a letter telling me that my gas was going up to £49 and my electric £64 a MONTH! i phoned them and asked why and was told that it was a 'restructuring' and could not be changed.
i obviously was not happy and immediately cancelled my direct debits i...

British Gas - absolute nightmare!
Advantages: None at all
Disadvantages: Expensive, appalling customer service, inaccurate billing
...I bought my first house in May 2007. I had heard lots of nightmare stories from friends about incorrect bills due to companies using the wrong meter readings, and I knew that the house I was buying had been unoccupied for some time so I wanted to get it right. So on the day I got the keys, I went out of my way to discover the gas and electric supplier. When I realised it was British Gas I contacted them immediately. I gave them all my details and the opening meter readings, along with bank details to set up a direct debit.
Two weeks later I got a letter addressed to the occupier stating if I did not contact them and provide my details they would cut off the power. Feeling slightly annoyed, I did this.
A week later a representative from Npower knocked on the door and offered me a much better deal. I snapped his hand off and he began...

British Gas - Worst Company Ever
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Poor Customer Service
...(I have added an update to the bottom of this review as of 09/06/2007)
It was a normal Tuesday morning and I was just preparing my breakfast when slam, The post drops to the floor through my letter box. I dash out to see what the postie has brought me, Just a few pieces of junk mail, Which I quickly bin and then return to my single remaining letter. It was a letter from British Gas..........
Here the nightmare begins........
-----------------
My Situation
-----------------
I have been with British Gas for just over a year now and I pay my bill monthly by direct debit, I pay £34 a month as that is what they estimated my electricity would cost me.
So back to the letter, It was a letter stating I am £534 in debit and I need to pay this amount immediately.
Now I have never missed a payment and I use about 10 Units...

British Gas??
Advantages: None that I can think of!!!
Disadvantages: Bad customer service agents, rude, ignorant, arrogant, bad prices! The list is endless!
...Where do I start? With their poor customer services? Their chasing that borders on harrassment when you have already agreed to make a payment plan with them? Or the prices that they charge that cost you twice what they would everywhere else!!!
I never had problems with British Gas before the last week. Being on a bill system, we received a bill for £140 for the quarter, which I found quite acceptable. I rang and made a plan to pay it weekly on a card system via a paypoint. It was agreed £8 on a weekly basis starting from April 2nd. Thats fine, until less than one week later we get a red reminder! Please bear in mind it is not yet April so how on earth can I pay the payment due on 2nd April?
So I rang them back and they apologised and said wouldnt receive anymore letters! I got another 2 days ago informing me I was being charged £14...

I have tried desperately to contact you to complain about your appalling service but regret your call centre is unable give us access to your direct customer service email address or fax number. I found it impossible to access you on-line or through your website. Many in our age group would not even attempt to contact you via the website even if it was user friendly to senior citizens or anyone. All you website has is numerous negative feedback from your dissatisfied customers.
Your 0845 numbers are a pain - one has to hold on between 35 and 75 minutes to get a reply and even when one gets a reply it is...
