Reviews of gateway e 3200 - piii 600 mhz - 17" crt
Will need upgrades.
Review of Gateway E 3200 - PIII 600 MHz - 17" CRT by
noldschool
Advantages: Inexpensive
Disadvantages: Stock Model
...This system will need upgrades. If you plan to use it for simple uses such as, browsing the internet, playing simple games, downloading music (not a lot of music), typing word documents, and sending e-mails. If so, this system would be sufficient.
This system will definately need a memory upgrade. 128MB is not enoguh memory to function properly. This is a basic stock model system. If you are looking to do anything fancy or at a fast pase, this is not the system for you.
Gateway technical support (1-800-846-2301) would be more than happy to assist you with upgrading the system, all you need to provide them with is the serial number for the machine (located at the back of the tower).
The sound is integrated, but upgradeable with a standard PCI soundcard. You would also be able to upgrade the video card in the same fashion.
Overall...

Pentium III - More for your money
Review of Intel Pentium III 933 MHz processor by
Willsy
Advantages: Reliable
Disadvantages: Cost? ( see opinion )
...tag given to Intel processors is somewhat unjustified.
For example my PIII 600 in May 2000 - cost £240 running at 800mhz. An 800mhz PIII at the time was approx £500, enough to get a top of the range graphics card and change. Admittedly there are some "hidden" costs to the overclocked version e.g. a good quality mainboard, roomy case for good airflow, and a better heatsink, but I think that these are good practice in building any computer, the other minus is there's no guarantee that the processor you get will sucessfuly overclock.
I would however still recommend the Pentium III, it's a good, fast and stable processor even when pushed towards it's limits....

Mhz death
Review of Elonex 17" CRT 0.27dp Monitor by
rushtond
Advantages: Goes to 800 by 600
Disadvantages: does nothing else
...If you ever have the option of buying a second hand monitor, it is my sound advise that you stay as far away as you can from Elonex monitors. Whenever you go above 800 by 600 the screen goes into a cycle of too many Mhz and emits a eraly high pitch annoing sound. Unfortunatly, there is no driver support anywhere for this monitor and is not even recognised by even the latest release of microsoft windows even though it is an old monitor.
The site for the company is poor and at least 50% of the download from their ftp site are corrupt making it impossible to update your software.
I am just glad i only bought a monitor from them....

Great Picture Quality
Review of Apple Studio Display 17 by
freecashuk
Advantages: Crisp Picture, More Deskspace, Stunning Design
Disadvantages: Non that I can think of!
...What a great monitor this is! The LCD display gives a very crisp picture indeed, and the colour reproduction is also very good.
The screen can display resolutions of 640x480, 800x600 (default) and 1024x768.
I have my monitor connected to a G4 500Mhz Macintosh and it has given me no problems at all. When I first got it I noticed how sharp the picture is compared to a CRT display, an now a CRT display just looks out of focus in comparison.
The Studio Display uses a Digital interface to connect to my Mac, however, as the G4 comes with a ATI Rage 128pro graphics card which has a digital output on it, this was not a problem.
The other great thing about this monitor is that I have regained about 2square feet of deskspace....

To the Max
Review of AOpen AK77-600 Max - motherboard - ATX - KT600 by
fulshit
Advantages: Cheap and lots of features
Disadvantages: average overclocking ability
...the area from obstructions and to make it easier for us to install the CPU heatsink especially the larger ones. In terms of overclocking the AOpen AK77-600 performs a pretty decent job overclocking an Athlon 3200+ on up to 210 front side bus. The cypress clock generator allows you to increase the FSB of the board of up to 248 MHz and you can adjust the voltage to your CPU, AGP and memory.
With a price of $133 this board has a lot features but not the best, especially in the bandwidth benchmarks this board is severely beaten by nForce 2 chipset systems. This motherboard offers a lot great features but it’s not intended for the power hungry games....

Aptive Expansion Limited
Review of IBM Aptiva 2158 - K6-2 450 MHz - 17" CRT by
carltonf
Advantages: VFM, Build Quality, IBM!!
Disadvantages: Lack of expansion potential
...This is a tricky one. I am an IT professional, but I bought a machine which most of my peers would not have touched. And I suppose only now I am getting frustrated.
I bought the Aptiva from Comet for £999 last Christmas. PIII 500, DVD and 17" monitor was the criteria I set. It only had 64MB RAM, but that was ok for beginners. I bought it from Comet for the interest free credit. I still consider it a good deal.
There was not much software with the machine - Lotus Smartsuite (which I would not use nowadays - our office uses MS Office, and it is so much easier to use the same). A few games were thrown in by Comet though. I primarily wanted the machine for VB programming at home. And the machine was fine. Fast, lots of hard disk space, decent monitor.
The whole package is very nice. Colour coded cables and ports. Nice flap...

19" of pure screen
Review of Iiyama Pro Lite E483S-S by
hoppa74
Advantages: Clear, bright, space saving, reasonable price
Disadvantages: Could come with a DVI cable but then it was only £220
...The ProLite E483S offers superb quality and value for money.
I changed from a 17" CRT monitor as it was on it's last legs, ok I wanted that extra 2" - who says size doesn't matter? It is actually more than a 2" increase as on a CRT monitor some of the tube is hidden behind the frame whereas a TFT screen is completely on show. NB screen sizes are quoted as the diagonal measurement of the screen.
I also shied away from TFT as the picture quality compared to a CRT was not as good IMO - until now! The screen is crisp and sharp on text documents, dvd's look great and games are smooth, (I have not noticed any ghosting or dead pixels). This is because the E483S has a 12msec response time and 500:1 contrast ratio. I'm in the process of obtaining a DVI cable (which does not come supplied - it's only downfall really, but then for about £220...

My parents brought this second hand off of E-Bay at £145 plus £18 postage but the only problem was it didn’t come with an external drive! My parents went searching everywhere for a CD or DVD drives but had no success so they brought one from Compaq. A MEU with a CD drive was £95 but luckily for me they sent the DVD one instead!!
