...Three weeks ago my husband and myself went to Austria on holiday. Now, normally, we would book our flight from Stanstead as it's just down the road, so to speak, but as this holiday was a present from one of our daughters and her husband, we accepted gratefully what she had arranged, which was a flight from Gatwick to Salzburg leaving at 6.05am. I didn't fancy spending all night travelling from Suffolk to Gatwick in time for the check in at 4.00am, so we decided to book a hotel close to the airport and travel down the night before. Well, I surfed the net and discovered the Gatwick Hilton for £139 for a double room. It sounded a lot but this also included 15 days parking, which would have cost around £70-80 on its own, and we didn't require breakfast that early in the morning. So, £139 for the room and parking seemed like a small price...

Holiday Inn, Gatwick

Advantages: Very near the airport.
Disadvantages: none

...I stayed at the holiday Inn Gatwick with my family before and after flying out to the caribbean. It was clean and friendly and even the kids enjoyed it. The rooms were quite spacious with tea and coffe facilities. I even called reception as there was only one hot chocolate between the 2 children, and they were at our room within minutes with more sachets and packets of biscuits. We ate an evening meal there too and it wasn't too badly priced! We got up early the next morning and had a swim before catching our longhaul flight, which used up a bit of energy so the kids weren't too restless on the plane. All in all we loved it and would definitely stay again....

Hilton Hotel, Gatwick

Advantages: Right on the Airport doorstep and connected via walkways.
Disadvantages: NOT cheap!

...This hotel is connected to Gatwick airport making it a cinch to use. The airport connects to this by way of following the signs along a few coridoors and into the Hotel. If you can get to Gatwick Airport by train, the hotel is quite easy to get to inside, just follow the signs. You stay under the walkways keeping dry and dont have to fiddle about with buses or taxi's. The rooms are quite basic considering the costs but, quite simply, you are paying for the convenience of not having to fiddle about with getting hotel buses to/from the airport. This is the real crunch of using the hotel. Naturally the rooms are ok with the usual facilites like on-suite toilets, TV, charge-able mini-bar, large bed unless you ordered a King-size. Airparks Car Parks Gatwick Airport

Advantages: Affordable and Reliable
Disadvantages: Once got date of return wrong, but were resolved this quickly

...Airparks is a company that runs a long term car parking facility at Gatwick Airport. I have used them on 3 different occasions when going on holiday. I usually prefer to use public transport to and from the airport but when the flight returns quite late I like to drive back. To book visit their website (www.airparks.co.uk), select the dates that you are looking to park for and they will quote a price. For 6 days this is in the region of £27 or £4.50 per day, so is not too bad. They are listed on several cashback sites, such as quidco and topcashback, so you can get around 10% of this back. You can pay by credit or debit card (credit cards have a £1.50 fee) and once payment has gone through you are sent a confirmation email with a reference number that you have to take with you when you go. Advantages: Fast, Clean, buy tickets on the train, with cash, credit card, switch, delta, amex not solo or visa electron. 24hrs, free porters,
Disadvantages: Lack of luggage space (which is being modified for the future)

...At the beginning of the year Gatwick Express recieved the majority of there new Juniper (Electric Trains) 8 in total, at any one time they run 7 trains between the airport and victoria. After many comments from Tourist's and regular commuters on the lack of Luggage space they have recently taken several of the trains out of service to be modified to a higher standard. they also noted that then new trains were a bit bumpy on certain parts of the track to and from the airport making the journey a particulary bumpy one however some of there trains have now been modified to correct this. I also agree with the lady's comment before mine on the lack of refreshments on the new trains which I am told willbe ironed out shortly, at the present time if any customer travels on train numbers 4 or 5 they will now notice that a buffet trolly...

Hilton - Gatwick Hotel

...I stayed in the Gatwick Hilton for 2 nights; 23rd March and 1st April. As a general overview I wasn't too impressed with the acclaimed Hilton hotel. There was a large group of us (about 30) and we all entered the hotel via the North terminal entrance. This was good as you could walk through a sheltered walkway to the main reception. The reception area itself had about 6 different stations that could have been used for check-in but only 2 of them were in operation (this was at about 6.30 so quite a few people would have been checking in at this time). It took quite a long time to check every one in and our cards were given out. The hotel had only given us 1 key card per room even though 2/3 people were in a room ? as you can imagine this caused problems of people trying to get into their rooms but their room mate not being there. APH Gatwick

Disadvantages: Car can get damaged and driven more than anticipated

...After handing in my keys to APH Gatwick, when I returned to collect the car (which I used to go to the airport with) from APH car parking at Gatwick airport, (a) the battery was "completely" flat, (b) I found out that it had been driven 6 miles unbeknownst to me, (even though it says on APH terms and conditions 4.5 "at its premises at one of its parking sites" (i.e. they do not mention that their other parking site is a whole 3 miles away, meaning it was driven on the road while I was under the impression that it would be moved within its premises and not being driven on the public road, and (c) the system lever to open the bonnet was broken upon my return, meaning that they tried to jump start the car while at its other premises (even though the person I spoke to flatly denied this). Suffice it to say that we were provided with accommodation by the airline and we certainly approached the hotel with not a little disgruntlement. Get Your Get Up & Go At Premier Travel Inn Gatwick

Advantages: Close to both terminals, clean, friendly staff, value for money
Disadvantages: Food in restaurant average quality for above average price, no machines selling toiletries.

Living in Wales, driving up on the morning of the flight would have been fraught and not very pleasant, so we decided to do the decent thing and splash out and treat ourselves (!) to a night in a Premier Travel Inn. Our reason for choosing this hotel was simple, we had stayed here last year and we knew the location of the hotel and we had had a good stay in this hotel so why not come back again for a place to lay our heads? This time, however, we had more time to spend in the hotel, due to using Virgin Atlantic's twilight check in service at 3pm the day before our flight..
