Typically, I checked out the menu beforehand and as someone who doesn't enjoy meat, I was dismayed to see the menu was a carnivores idea of heaven with only a smattering of non-meat choices. . . However, Gaucho's was so delicious it totally changed my mind about beef, so, several Fridays back I took Boyf there to celebrate my birthday. . . Depending on your level of taste you'll either love the interior or hate it; the decor of Gauchos is very dark and slick - the walls have cow hide panels and big panels of lightly smoked glass with the most dazzling dangly glass lights. A carnivore feast from the Pampas

...INTRODUCTION Here's one for you hardcore meat eaters. In the mood for a steak, I found myself on Breda's main square and considering going to Gauchos. This is a popular steak restaurant on the main square and I thought it was about time that I treated them to a review. Argentinian Steak plus Open Fire equals Perfection

Advantages: Super Steaks from the Original Argentinian Steak House
Disadvantages: Not a good place for vegetarians

...South America produces the worlds best beef. I´ve not yet travelled there, but I have enjoyed the most wonderful Argentinian steaks in Amsterdam. The city has many Argentinian and Uraguayan steak houses. My favourite is the daddy of them all, Gaucho´s. Its rough hewn wooden booths and black and white cow hide seats have been copied by scores of lesser competitors, many of whom also duplicate their menu word for word. That´s an indication of just how good Gaucho´s is. There are at least six branches of Gaucho´s in Amsterdam, including one just off Dam square in Dam Straat, but I am going to do something I know I will regret, which is to give the location of my favourite one which is in Spuistraat - a few minutes walk from Centraal Station. There is not only Spanish food in Madrid...

Advantages: good food, very cheap

Because is difficult to find a place there before publishing an opinion about it and to attract still more people (if you all travel and go there...). But I am going to risk myself and I am going to share one of my favourite restaurants. I discovered it by luck. It was New Year's Eve and we were walking around the centre of Madrid trying to find a place where to have an early supper and to avoid the typical menus of that day. It was difficult, really. We entered a little by chance, to take something and attracted by the good environment. By fortune they served food at the bar since the restaurant was completely reserved. A great solo album from the 80's.

Advantages: It's Donald Fagen
Disadvantages: The sound quality is pants!

...In between recording with Walter Becker the seminal albums “Aja” and “Gaucho” under the banner of Steely Dan, Donald Fagen recorded this masterpiece of audio art. The afore mentioned album called the “The Nightfly” runs at less than 40 minutes long and has 7 self-penned tracks and has 1 track written by the legendary song-writing partnership of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, their song “Ruby Baby” is clearly the most commercial sounding on the whole album, the collection was arranged by Donald Fagen and on production duties was the same producer as the man who had produced all the Steely Dan recordings Gary Katz. As the album opens up with the track ”I.G.Y.” (International Geophysical Year) the “electric piano” playing of Greg Phillinganes creates a retro sound...

Great for plane spotters

Advantages: Good location to transport links
Disadvantages: Can be a noisy night

...the health club and gym. The second is on the roof on the 16th floor, with fantastic views and a roof top bar. For all you airplane watchers out there this one to come to. The hotel is DIRECTLY under the flight path and every half hour or so (the airport is not busy) you will either see a plane fly over about 100m way or almost in eye sight line just to the side if it is one of the local TAP airlines pilots flying the plane, Hong Kong style. The hotel is well insulated enough for you not to be affected by the noise at all. The restaurant offers good fayre but Porto as a vary wide variety of top quality cuisine, whereas the hotel is more conservative/bland in it's cuisine. I would recommend going to the Gaucho brazillian restaurant for some Rodizio, the Don Manuel for local Cuisine and the Convivio for a Francesinha Especial (the best in the city...

Not just another cheap red ! Classy Latino

...and imagine an exotic existence perhaps mingling with gauchos and tango dancing upon imbibing of this liquid. Did this happen to me ? Well not quite unless you count an urge to semi-drunkenly to try and speak Spanish counts in this category of 'Another Life'. I can however confirm despite sounding like a travel brochure this was indeed a top drop for the money for a number of well earned reasons. It was a very elegant wine with a smooth, faultless and seamless body and a decently long finish. To elaborate further the nose led me in with pleasantly restrained and refined aromas of dark plums, black berries with a touch of leather and florality. I could not pick up any oak influences (i.e. vanilla, toast) so I guess this wine was aged in stainless steel containers after fermentation. I found the body to be medium in nature, very graceful...

GOTCHA!

...a lot from all around the world, but most particularly from Latin America. Some would say that's hardly an improvement. I'd be one of them. Anyway, Argentina's most popular beer is QUILMES. It's been around since 1888 and, I would imagine, is hard to avoid in the land of the Gauchos. Speaking of Argentina... After Argentina's attempt to retire Diego Maradonna's number 10 shirt was rejected by FIFA, the Argentinian manager allocated the shirt to the third goalkeeper, meaning that the Argentine number 10 will be allowed to use his hands. No change there then. Back to the beer... This beer pours a bright and clear, straw-yellow colour with a good-sized, brilliant white head of foam which lasts a little longer than you'd expect for a macro lager, but doesn't last quite long enough to lace the glass in any meaningful way...

Argentinean steak served in the traditional way

Disadvantages: Not a plush, fancy place if you like that kind of thing

...activity and shops, which I personally like, and "coffee" and "smart" shops, which I don't. There are also a couple of sex shops and I'm saying nothing. In any case, the restaurant is in the perfect place to attract the minimum of attention with its dark, intimate interior. I have heard this is what the other Argentine restaurant in Breda, Gauchos, used to look like. Random South American music was played at a non disturbing volume throughout. Each table is set against the side wall, and attached to the wall is a small shelf containing salt, pepper, Tabasco sauce and a bottle of wine. In my case, the wine was a Callia Alta 2006 Shiraz-Malbec Argentinean jobbie.
