...Introduction ~~~~~~~~ Geneva is located in the south-west part of Switzerland is very near to France. In fact part of Geneva airport is in France. If going on holiday to you means "cheap stuff" then Geneva and Switzerland in general for that matter is not your ideal holiday. Switzerland shares rip-off Britain prices and many things are more expensive there. The only thing that is cheaper there is petrol and fags. Scenery ~~~~~~~~~~ The scenery in Geneva is beautiful near the lake. From the lake you can see into the Alps and see the famous Lake Geneva fountain. At night Geneva is stunning, the fountain is lit up and all the posh offices have fancy lights. Switzerland's Only Museum for Potheads

Advantages: If you like pots, it's the best place in Switzerland
Disadvantages: If you don't like pots and glass, this probably isn't for you

...Serendipity - it's a great word, isn't it? One online dictionary defines it as "The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident" and I'm a fan of such accidental discoveries. Our most recent was the Musee Ariana in Geneva. What's the chance that my husband and I, wandering around looking for the Red Cross museum and the United Nations building, will stumble across museum dedicated to two arts that we're passionate about? We love glass and we particularly love ceramics and as we walked from the bus stop to the Red Cross museum we just happened to see the signs for the Musee Ariana. As luck would have it this is the only museum in the whole of Switzerland that's devoted to ceramics and glass. And it's FREE! Truly the gods were smiling down on us that Sunday afternoon. The Crown Of Switzerland

Advantages: Londoners perspective: beautiful, clean, orderly and different
Disadvantages: Londoners perspective: Expensive (yes even for me!)and a little small and quiet

...I have been to Geneva three times now because I have a friend who lives there. Otherwise I?m not sure it would have crossed my mind to visit. It?s certainly not one of those places on everyone?s must see list. Geneva is in Switzerland but is actually surrounded by France. It is a very unique city - a mix of European and British / American influences with people of all different nationalities settled there. And although the primary language is French most speak at least Basic English. Transport Getting to Geneva could not be simpler. Most budget airlines fly there, for example Easyjet have around three flights a day from London Gatwick. The flight only takes an hour and a half and as long as you don?t travel during the peak skiing season prices are really cheap (for example £10!). The airport is not far from the city centre...

Chocolates and cuckoo clocks....

Advantages: pretty scenery,lots to do, peaceful
Disadvantages: can be expensive

...The surrounding of lake Geneva takes me back in time. There are numerous cafe's and chocolate shops dotted all around, these are very quaint with a "time gone by" feel to them. Though some can be expensive (Geneva is no the cheapest of cities!) it is well worth taking a walk around the lake with a bag of your favourite hand picked chocolates! The lake, and it's surrounding cafe's and shops, are very clean and unspoiled, in fact the cleanliness of Geneva was amazing and the best in comparison to any other city which I have visited. There is less trafic polution as well, as peolpe tend to prefer to either cycle or roller skate around the lake area. The local, small but rather quaint and lovely shops are fun to visit, especially as there are a fun collection of cuckoo clocks that can be bought - very tempting, but maybe...

Addressing my Ignorance on the Red Cross

Advantages: Very interesting, very educational

... Red Cross and Red Crescent - my Ignorance Like many people, I've never given much thought to the Red Cross. It's not that I'm ignorant of world affairs but it's the sort of organisation many of us take for granted. The 'Geneva Conventions' are similar; a phrase we all trot out whenever someone somewhere is doing something that commonsense says is naughty but not something I really know much about. Other than a vague sense that when the four horsemen of the apocalypse saddle up and head off to visit some godforsaken part of the world, you can guarantee that the Red Cross will be close behind, I can honestly say it was an organisation I took for granted on a massive scale. I have never stayed in a Swiss Hotel before and I understand they are all of good quality, but this hotel had so much character too. Location (1 Rue des Marbrieres) As I walked everywhere, I will give you approximate walking times from places:- 20 minutes from the main station (Gare Cornavin) 20 minutes from the Old town 15 minutes from the English Garden with the view of the Jet D'Eau 15 minutes from the main shopping area 5 minutes from the nearest supermarket (the Co-op is at the end of the road!) 5 minutes to the nearest bus stop It's located in a quiet road just outside all the main areas - making it quiet but accessible for everything. ...My end of course exam loomed earlier this month and the news that it would take place in Geneva presented me with the appealing prospect of combining the dreaded exam with a much more pleasant trip to visit my parents in the UK. To Geneva the round about way

Advantages: Was cheaper at the last minute, free food, assigned seating

I looked at EasyJet and found that their flights (from either Luton, East Midlands or Gatwick) were an outrageous price, well over £200. Low cost? I think not. So I scoured the web some more, and found that Lufthansa was offering a price of just over £100 including taxes. Sure, I had to fly from Heathrow, which is always a joy, and change in Frankfurt. But to save well over 100 quid, why not? Plus I could get miles on my Air Canada plan. I used to fly LH a lot in the 70s, transatlantic from Geneva via Frankfurt, so it was fun to try them out now. Not a five star hotel

Advantages: Close to the airport and convention centre
Disadvantages: Room is basic, about a 10 minute trip to the centre of Geneva

We selected it as it was advertised as a five star hotel on the last minute website at a cost of £90 per night (the advertised rack rate is CHF650 or approx £263). This was room only, breakfast was available at an additional 34F. Location The hotel is located very close to the Geneva airport. Nearby is the convention centre, as well as an automotive museum. The hotel is located off a busy highway. Transfer from the airport Taxis are available at the airport, however, the hotel runs a regular shuttle bus service (approx every twenty minutes).
