HOLIDAY INN - GHENT

Advantages: clean, tidy, good service and price
Disadvantages: need a taxi to get into town

...I have been on two different Christmas Shopping bus trips and both times have stayed at the Ghent Holiday Inn. The price of each trip was £99 inclusive of bus travel, ferry crossing and two nights accomodation at the Holiday Inn. LOCATION +++++++++ The Holiday Inn Ghent is around 60km from Brussels and is situated in central Belgium which makes it ideal to explore the country. It is near the intersection of the E17 and E40 motorways. It is 65km from Ostend airport in Holland and 62km from Antwerp airport . On the first trip that I went on we visited Valkenburg and Ostend in Holland, and Aachen in Germany and each day we made good time and were not rushed at all. The nearest town is Gent which is around 3km away. There are plenty of restaurants, shops and bars in Gent. FACILITIES +++++++++ The hotel is used...

Review of Holiday Inn, Ghent

Pretty, Oh so Pretty

Advantages: Sweet Belgian city with some interesting unique things to see
Disadvantages: Not booming out of season

......pretty and witty and bright...charming, oh, so charming ... Ghent was our the other city we spent time in during our recent trip to Belgium, and I think I preferred it to Antwerp. Your initial feeling when entering a foreign city for a first time can often be an indication of how much you'll enjoy your stay - it's not about how good a city is on paper, or how other people perceive it, but what you think of it that really matters, and Ghent and I got on like a house on fire. Ghent has a rustic Italian feel to it, without being either rustic or Italian. I think what I mean is that it feels traditional, properly-European, complete with old cobbled streets, gaudy cathedrals and churches and a sweet old castle. It's a nice quiet place to look around at times, such as Sunday morning when all good natives are at Mass and there are not...

Review of Ghent (Belgium)

A Day out in Ned Flanders...

Advantages: Wonderful buildings, great bars and lots to do.
Disadvantages: Not quite as pretty as Bruges.

...During our recent jaunt to Ostende we decided to go off on the train for the day. In my previous review about the wonderful beer dark beer called Zatte Bie I mentioned that we drank it while in Ghent. This has prompted me to tell you all about our grand day out in this lovely city. We were only there for one day and did kind of just do a glorified bar crawl?.but we did get the chance to explore in the process! After getting over the shock of the train leaving on time we settled back for the 45 minute journey from Ostende ~ through some extremely pretty, but extremely FLAT scenery! ~~~USEFUL INFO. Ghent is in an area of Belgium called East Flanders (Ostende is in the neighbouring region of West Flanders?Ned Flanders is a character in the Simpsons and shouldn?t be confused with any of these areas!). The Girls in The Windows

Advantages: Great Location, Breakfast & Friendly Staff
Disadvantages: Itchy Blankets and Thin Walls - Nothing That Bad!

...carpet, was a good size compared to some hotels and the breakfast compared even more favourably. There was a range of cooked meats for The Boyfriend, warm crusty rolls, cheese, hard boiled eggs, honey, butter cake, yoghurts, cereal and bananas. I also ate my first authentically Belgian Bun, dribbled with icing. (I've seen a few complaints on Trip Advisor about the lack of fruit at breakfast in the Eden and there wasn't much selection, but the bananas were fine by me.) The tea, coffee and orange juice were excellent. LOCATION: After breakfast, we headed out to see what there was to see. The Eden is a stones throw from the historical cobbled centre of Ghent and it was no problem popping back to the hotel for coats and then for dry clothes after we took a 40 minute ride on an open boat in a rainstorm. Would you Adam and Eve it?

Advantages: Friendly, comfortable and good buffet breakfast.
Disadvantages: Limited parking and looks awful from the front.

...After our excellent weekend to Belgium earlier on this year I really wanted to tell you about the hotel we stayed in. It was recommended to our party (of 17 people) by friends who had stayed there on a few occasions. As this hotel may not seem like much from the outside I thought it warranted a review to put it on the map! This lovely little hotel is the Hotel Eden. ~~~WHERE IS IT? The Hotel Eden can be found five minutes walk from the centre of the East Flanders town of Ghent. It is just around the corner from a tram and bus stop, where you can get a tram to the train station (in one direction), or into the centre of Ghent (in the other direction) if you are less mobile. It is on quite a busy road in an area with quite a few shops, making the walk to the tourist attractions (the cathedral is only a short stroll south east...

go to Ghent!

Advantages: cute.
Disadvantages: but bland, and if you've limited time you should go elsewhere

...good too, but ultimately there really isn't that much to do here. I took the option of taking a train to Ghent, and discovered a city not hyped as much as Bruges, but with far greater, more eclectic charms. Bruges is OK for half a day, but unless you're part of the "delightful" brigade of pensioners, don't waste too much time here....

Review of Best Western Hotel Cour St. Georges, Ghent

A charming but largely forgotten gem...

Advantages: Truly inspirational and funny, totally charming.
Disadvantages: Child actors are a bit naff.

...of sheep radar. Most of the characters are named after Yorkshire places, including the punning "Penny Ghent", and the entire series exudes Northern charm. The only slightly irritating factor is the standard of the child actors, but the often ridiculous puppets carry the show. And, unlike so much kids TV these days, there's always a useful life lesson to be learnt. Be nice, be funny, and don't be stupid....

Advantages: heart warming, a film for everyone, and drew barrymore
