...I recently bought a '93 Les Paul Studio to avoid taking my older guitars out to gigs - too many Daylight Robbers in this world nowadays! Overall, the build quality is acceptable. I have bought this guitar because I want something that sounds like a LP Custom, and the range of Gibson tones available is wider than that. It can be made to sound like an SG by using the tone controls, and it is possible to approach the "woman" tone of the ES335 with this guitar! It plays acceptably, although the bridge has to be on its lowest setting, and I have other guitars with a better action. I like the short scale on Gibson guitars - it suits my small hands, and gives a little more tension with light strings than a Fender does. Gibson Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar

Advantages: That sound, image, hold their price
Disadvantages: Price, build quality

...I ve had mine for 10 months now and I love it to death. The 60's style fit my hand beautifully and the weight is well balanced and not too heavy. Sounds. I gigg mine weekly and it produces a deep rich clean sound for thoes mellow tunes, a Peter Green type overdrive for blues right through to hi gain distortion and all done with a superior quality of tone. Build Quality..... C'mon Gibson sort it out!!!!. Mine has steps in the binding and the odd laquer blemish, and the bridge post are very spindley. So Why did I buy It?... I tryed many in shops before i chose this one and i found them all to be different in feel and tone. As a giging guitarist I chose this one because of its feel and tone. Epiphone Les Paul Studio, a little too evil?

Advantages: Build quality, Bridge pickup, Hardware
Disadvantages: Weight, Finish

...Firstly i'd like to say that for me this guitar looks rather drab and boring, as it is so plain and all in black. There is no contrast in colour and doesn't really stand out. But with that now said, i will go onto the other aspects. It has the standard les paul fittings, which are sturdy and reliable, and the tuners that hold their tuning very well. The pickups are high output and sound very heavy, which is ideal for hard rock and metal. The neck pickup sounds a bit too heavy and doesn't sound great with only light distortion but sound good clean. The guitar is quite heavy in weight and can make my shoulder ache if i've had it on the strap too long. But the weight is only due to the mahogany it is made from. It is buit very well and is also sturdy. The fitted neck is very nice and adds to the build quility....

My 2001 Gibson Les Paul Standard

Gibson Les Paul Special P100 pickups

Advantages: Excellent tone, playability and value - for a Gibson
Disadvantages: Does not have the punch of humbuckers

...There are several versions of the LP Special. The older models have P90 pickups, some have single cutaway, some have double cutaways. The reissue models have P100 pickups, or humbuckers, like the guitar pictured. Since the one I own has P100 pickups, I do not know about the guitar in the picture! The P90 and P100 pickups look the same, but the P100 is a humbucking design, while the P90 is single coil. Sometimes these are called "soapbar" pickups, especially if they have cream covers - they have cream or black covers, depending on the guitar they are fitted on - usually black on a LP Special. I learned to play electric guitar on a 56 LP with P90s, so I am in a position to compare my modern guitar with the old ones. My LP Special is a cherry red 1996 model. Epiphone Les Paul Studio

Advantages: Sweet clasic sound of truck Rock & Roll
Disadvantages: Quite heavy

...I would have to say haveing not owned but played all of them the Studio would have to be the best Epiphone Les Paul i have played. Which is uppose is why i bought it. At £260 reduced from £350 it is a very nice second or third guitar, depending on your finacial posision. I think out of all the mainsteam guitars on the market has the largest could variety i have ever seen. At least 15 Different shades of sunburst, not to mension the different shades of hardware. It gives a perfect soud unique to the Gibson and Epiphone ranges. I would be carful not to be confused as a first time buyer for repicas such as "Vintage" or "De-Amon" who have never beed able recreate the true Gibson sound. As guitar shop sales are common it is definetly a guitar to look out for!!...

Epiphone Gothic Les Paul Studio

...The Epiphone studio guitar that I own is the "limited edition, Gothic ,studio ,les paul" and therefore unsurprisingly this is the guitar I am reviewing. The Epiphone Gothic les paul is not to distant to it's Gibson cousin, it contains the same electronics and additional metal-wear (machine heads, dial heads etc.) the only major difference is that the Gibson is handmade and so costs a fortune! The Epiphone is a body heavy guitar but is also still very light when compared to something like a B.C. Rich Warlock. The Gothic les paul maintains the good tone and over all sound you would expect from Gibson but at Epiphone prices! Clean Channel --------------------- On a clean channel this guitar provides a good blues sound perfect for .....well blues. If given the slightest overdrive it makes for a brilliant jazz...

Long Live The Les Paul

.... It got pretty well thrashed for the first 4 or 5 years of it’s existence with me – including falling off a 2 or 3 foot stage riser directly on to the headstock ! I think it’s a good indication of the Les Paul’s ruggedness that there was only a slight chip in the paintwork which in my eyes (once I got over the shock of watching this happen from the bar) only added to the my LP’s mystique. An earlier LP copy suffered a similar accident and suffered a snapped neck just below the headstock. Soooooooo I think playing in the odd pub and club provided me with some insights into the guitar’s character and obviously as nothing is ever perfect, it unearthed a few flaws also. Gibson Les Paul Standard : Woman Tone

Advantages: Fat solos and chunky power chords
Disadvantages: Not as versatile as a Strat, rather heavy and 'uncomfortable' body

...hardware appears to be nickel-plated, including the Tone-O-Matic bridge, Stopbar tailpiece and 2 humbucker pickups. The '3-a-side' tuners appear to be 'aged' green Grovers, while the 2 volume and 2 tone controls are of the clear acetate 'gold top hat' variety. Pickup selection is achieved by a 3-way toggle switch on the upper bout of the body. The guitar came with Gibson Brite Wires (.010 - .046) but still plays like a dream, even with .011 - .049 Ernie Ball Power Slinkys. String bending is smoother and less 'painful' than on a Strat; most probably due to the well-finished jumbo frets, shorter scale length and decreased string tension. The stock humbuckers are clean and powerful, but never as clear as the single coils on a Strat or Strat clone. A Gibson by any other name...

Advantages: Well built, sexy, great value for money, feels great
Disadvantages: Naff quality pickups

...After not picking up a guitar for over a year (for personal reasons, see my details for a hint as to why...), I decided to pick up a guitar again and wanted a new one. Preferably a good but not pricey one and not a Fender, my usual weapon of choice. So after much humming and ahhhing, I decided on a the Les Paul Custom by Epiphone. I would have loved the real Gibson version, but hey! I work for the NHS and that is waaaay out of my league cost wise. However, Gibson bought out Epiphone in 1957 and since that time have used Epiphone for not only contnuing to produce models unique to Epiphone itself but also to make cheaper official 'copies' of 'proper' Gibson guitars. So in effect, you're getting a Gibson in all but name. I managed to get a Chinese-built Epiphone Les Paul Custom in black as an offer from an ebay seller for the great price...
