My Gibson SG
Advantages: Great look, great sound and playability. Light
Disadvantages: Quite expensive therefore not for beginners
...Hello I am returning to Ciao after quite a few years! I thought I would start by reviewing what I regard as the best product I have ever purchased! I have been a guitar player over 6 years and play this guitar most days. Any technical words I use I will try to explain for people who do not play the guitar!
Price
I purchased a wine red Gibson SG Special for £500 about 4 years ago. However the price now seems to be ranging from around £600 to £800 at most online dealers. Therefore it is certainly not an ideal guitar for beginners, make sure you will stick at playing before buying one!
Guitar Materials
The main body of the guitar (the wide end that you strum) is made from solid Mahogony, as is the neck (the thin part that you play the notes). The fingerboard where you place your fingers to play the notes, is made from...

SG Special - a Gibson thoroughbred
Advantages: Real Gibson Quality
Disadvantages: Heart Stopping price tag
...A colleague at work has one of these.
Having fallen into a conversation about our axes and telling him about my Les Paul it was inevitable that we would end up round his house jamming and trying out each other's instruments.
The SG Special is a budget version of the SG Standard but over £300 cheaper. The differences? Chrome hardware, dot fret markers instead of trapezoid, a soft gig bag instead of the hard case, no pickup covers and no binding on the neck or body.
Otherwise there is no difference. The build quality, materials, electricals and finish are 100% Gibson.
She is a fine looking machine and a dream to play. The SG was Gibson's answer to the criticism that the Les Paul is too heavy.
The SG body is thinner and lighter, although later Les Pauls like mine are considerably lighter than the old school ones...

Gibson SG standard...
Advantages: Stunning looks. Amazing sound (Clean + Distorted). Amazingly Light.
Disadvantages: Newer Models can be weak at the neck.
...can you see some of the stress marks in the lacquer.
I heard from Dave that only a couple of years before, Gibson went through money troubles and stopped making the SG and Les Paul Standards with the 3pc necks, which if that is true, is completely ridiculous as they made the weakest part of the guitar weaker.
But other than that one problem this guitar is the best investment I have made, even after the major breakage the guitar stays in tune perfectly and there are no problems with the intonation.
The guitar in my opinion is the ideal piece of equipment for a musician of really any style of music. It has the unique warm ''Gibson'' sound that you will fall in love with....

Gibson SG
Advantages: good looks, two humbuckers, made of mahogony and rosewood, not to heavy, easy to play, comfortable
Disadvantages: A bit expensice
...I bought this product in a music shop near my house for £1399.99 about 4 months ago(Jan/Feb) and have been playing it everyday for about 1-4hours. I'm using a Marshall MG15CD with it and it just sounds .... fabulous.
The body of the guitar is made of mahogony wood and comes in either cherry red or ebony- I have the cherry red one.
The neck is also made of mahogony wood and of rosewood.
I already own a Fender Stratocaster and am happy to say that the Gibson SG is much lighter and has a much nicer sound.
The neck has 22frets and the guitar has two humbuckers, a three way switch and two tone and two volume controls.
The sound quality of most electric guitars depends on the amplifier you use-but not with this guitar. This guitar sounds great with any type of amplifier -be it a 500w or 5w ,small or big, expensive or cheap etc...

Gibson SG - The Greatest Guitar in The World
Advantages: Fantastic Appearence, Sound, just an amazing guitar
Disadvantages: a bit advanced for secondary guitarists ?
...When i saw Kelly Jones ( Stereophonics ) on stage strumming a cherry red , Gibson SG Classic, the sound so crisp and fine. I had to have it.Not only does the SG look fantastic its one of the best guitars ive ever played. To any guitar enthusiast there is Always some respect for the SG as it is many big artist faviroutes. These include Kelly Jones, Hard FI, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Blur to name a few. I first played on an SG after hours and hours of Stratocasters, Telecasters, Flying V's and Westwoods. All had good points but none made me feel like spending 100's. It needed to feel like id been playing it for years, a soft, fast paced fretboard, a heavy stock head, A stocky base , something i could really FEEL vibrate when i plugged it into the amp.So when i first plugged it in at PMT Oxford and strummed that deep A minor i knew this was...

SG - Special Guitar, Stunningly Good!
Advantages: Plays well, feels great, sounds fantastic!
Disadvantages: Not cheap, could do with hard case supplying with it.
...Yes, yes I know, yet another geetar review. But a man has to have a hobby and sheep farmers keep a watchful eye on their livestock these days. Anyone want to buy a pair of second hand wellies?
Seriously, I've been after a USA built Gibson for some time now and decided to go for the SG Special in faded worn brown. This is the entry level for the legendary model (£645 in this case, though still expensive). Buying guitars online can save a LOT of money but it something of a lottery as you can get a real lemon sometimes. But as we'll see, I hit lucky this time.
This parcel arrived at my door and I eagerly opened it to reveal..... well, a real beauty! The faded worn brown of the body and neck wasn't so much worn or faded but rather minimal, unlike some of the over laquered models on offer., to the point where you can still slightly feel...

The SG special, a Gibson at an affordable price.
Advantages: Great to play, great price for a USA guitar!
Disadvantages: little details mean it doesnt look as nice as the standard.
...We've all been there, watching tv seeing artists with their expensive guitar and sighed. If only I could afford one of those. Most likely you've visited your guitar shop and had to think about settling for a korean/mexican guitar that just isn't that special USA produced one you wanted.
Well let me introduce the Gibson SG special. Already a legend in its own right - established in the 60s now is the perfect time to buy one! For some reason there is a price drop meaning you can pick one of these babies up for around £600 new, not bad given it comes with a gig bag, and is of course a Gibson!
<Looks>
This guitar has been around for years so the design is pretty much unchanged. The shape is nice, the head looks very prestigious with the gibson logo sat there! The frets feature a dot design unlike the rectangular fret markings...

Epiphone SG
Advantages: Beautiful guitar. Excellent sound. Very playable.
Disadvantages: None whatsoever!
...The Epiphone SG - the cheaper younger brother of the Gibson version, but it's certainly a worthy substitute.
It's dark cherry colour, dark wooden neck and black scratch panel are excellent on the eye, and with it's symmetrical body it is one of the best looking guitars out there!
The strings are raised higher in their saddle on the SG than say on a Fender, which is more ideal for lead guitarists out there, but being a rhythm man myself, there is no inconvenience whatsoever.
I like to use Ernie Ball .9 Slinky strings on it, and they fit just about perfectly - you could probably squeeze some .11's in there easily enough if you really wanted to and if you played quite a lot of heavier music.
Two pickups sit on the bridge, and three pickup selections are available - rhythm, middle and treble, depending on what takes your fancy...

SG Gothic - discontinued but worth looking for!
Advantages: Great looks and for that metal sound
Disadvantages: Only really for rock/metal, discontinued in 2002
...potential!
A limited edition Gibson for sale in 30 years time? You could make yourself a nice profit if you keep good care of it.
Buy it if you want a fast metal, rock guitar but if you are looking for cleaner tones have a look at the more versatile standard sg....

Let there be Rock!!!!
Advantages: It's a Gibson!
Disadvantages: None that I know of...it's a Gibson!
...I saw my first Gibson SG in the 80's when I went to see AC/DC during the For Those About to Rock tour (yes, unfortunately I am that old!). As I walked away from that gig I swore to myself that I would own one of those guitars one day. Twenty years later I finally realised my ambition when my brand new Gibson SG Special finally arrived on my doorstep.
First the specifications:
Two 490 humbucker pickups
Mahogany body
Rosewood fingerboard
Dot inlays
"Kluson" type machineheads.
Available in Wine Red or Black
The SG Special is the 'no-frills' little brother of the SG Standard, although most of the differences are cosmetic such as an unbound neck and uncovered pickups. Plus the SG Standard is about £300 more expensive!
Build quality:
Overall this is built and finished absolutely beautifully. The finish is nitrocellulose...
