What a Hotel Experience!

Advantages: Excellent hotel and golf courses
Disadvantages: expensive

...We stayed at the Gleneagles hotel after I ended up with a voucher for 2 nights for a couple. Had a discussion with the wife whether or not to take children. Decided to take ours which suited us fine but a romantic weekend for 2 seems to be the choice for most who were there. Called the hotel to ask about whether I could get a separate room for the children. They said I could but for £350/night! So we quickly decided to take them into our room (for £40 each per night!). This turned out to be a good choice since the room is spacious. During the conversation with the hotel I asked what the kids could do during our stay and was referred the Gleneagles website (www.gleneagles.co.uk). Had a look there and could not believe my eyes: golf, horse riding, driving little electronic cars could all be arranged for the kids (for a price). The wife...

I'm not much of a hotel person.....

Advantages: Fantastic facilities, services and views
Disadvantages: Expensive,

...I'm not much of a hotel person. Give me a B&B anyday. In my experience most are cold, impersonal and the facilities often sound better on paper than they are in real life. Gleneagles is different. Like any 5 star, luxury hotel Gleneagles has a lot to offer - luxury en suite rooms, top class restaurants (one with Michlin stars), sports facilities and the usual slew of services. What other hotels don't have is a choice of 4 world class gold courses, on site activities such as archery, shooting, off-road driving (suitable for kids), falconry, a maze, a wide range of sports facitilities such as tennis courts and mountain bikes. Most of my time there was spent in the luxurious Spa, which included a lap pool, a general 'fun' pool, jaccuzzi, jet pool and outdoor hot pool, steam room, sauna and plenty of loungers just to laze...

Hotel Geneagles, Torquay. very faulty

Advantages: non
Disadvantages: room poor, food cold and extra unexplained charges

...The Best Western Gleneagles describes itself as been located in a chic area of Torquay which is about 12 min taxi ride from the station, It boasts 41 modern rooms many of which have ocean views and all of which have private balconies, all rooms are tastefully designed with en suite bathroom, TV, hairdryer and hot drinks refreshment tray. Prices can vary depending on the time of year you visit this hotel and if any special offers are present. I myself was attending a trade show in Torquay and required a smoking room of which I was informed this hotel has 11 such rooms for those wishing to smoke, the rest of the hotel is of course non smoking to comply with regulations. This was a prime reason for choosing Gleneagles for my Torquay hotel as many other hotels are totally non smoking. I arrived late afternoon and was informed that...

Do you remember the G8 at Gleneagles?

Advantages: well written and accurate
Disadvantages: some investigative leaps

...This book I bought for more personal reasons than the usual 'it just jumped in to the basket, Dad, honest' excuse I give when my Dad spots yet more books migrating on to the already groaning book cases in my room. My reasons simply were that as well as enjoying the other books which feature Rebus, during the period of time this book was set I was living in Stirling and working near the location of the G8 summit and Gleneagles during the day and in the City Centre at night. So my experiences of seeing the marchers, small scale riots, Protesters Camps and getting stuck in road blocks meant this book would either confirm my suspicsions about Ian Rankin's eye for detail and 'historical' accuracy or blow my belief by proving it to be all lies. So going back to the plot, Rebus as we all know is getting on in years and beginning to quite...

Fawlty towers (Timeless comedy)

Advantages: Very verry funny
Disadvantages: none

...Most people will have watched at least one of these classics of British comedy. There was only 12 episodes ever made, and this dvd box set has them all. Fawlty towers is a hotel in Torquay, which is based on a real hotel (Gleneagles in torquay) where the monty python team stayed. All the other pythons left but John Cleese decided to stay and get material from this manager. He invited his wife Connie Booth to come and stay with him, and they began writing Fawlty Towers. The first series was shown in 1973. John Cleese plays the happless Basil Fawlty, who is Married to Cybil (Prunella Scales). Polly (Connie Booth) is the level headed one, and the only one who is sensible and she is person who makes the beds and sets the tables. Manwell (Andrew Sachs) is the spannish waiter who can speak virtually no English. This allows for a lot...

Rankin does it again

Advantages: Great storytelling
Disadvantages: Drags a bit with over padding

...I have fallen behind of late with my reading as I keep finding new authors that are fascinating. As a result, I recently checked how I was doing with Ian Rankin's Rebus books, and realised that I am, indeed, a couple behind. with this one and the subsequent 'Exit Music' to read and get up to date on. So I settled down to read The Naming of the Dead, expecting and hoping for another thoroughly good Rankin tale. And essentially I got it. Another murder case for Rebus to solve, some more bosses to annoy and a whole lot of trouble to get into is the order of the day, and not for the first time for the Scottish Detective Inspector. Set in 2005, Rankin uses the Gleneagles G8 summit to provide a backdrop to the political aspect of his tale, with protests and high levels of security for foreign dignitaries featuring quite heavily in the book...

Review of The Naming Of The Dead - Ian Rankin

A comedy classic

Advantages: Guaranteed to laugh, nice presentation of DVDs
Disadvantages: Only 12 episodes

...& his then wife & actress Connie Booth. The whole idea was based on a visit to the Hotel Gleneagles in Torquay in May 1971 when John Cleese & the other members of the Month Python team were staying. The owner of the hotel was Donald Sinclair who had a dislike to the hotel guests & was often very rude to them. He complained when he saw Terry Gilliam using a knife & fork to cut his food & then switch his fork to his right hand to eat, as an American it was regarded as quite normal but for the hotel owner it wasn?t. He remarked to Terry ?we don?t eat like that in this country!? On another occasion Eric Idle had left his brief case in the reception area of the hotel, when he arrived back later that day he asked Sinclair if he had seen it. Sinclair told him it was sitting at the other side of the garden wall. When asked by Eric why it...

Duchally...Luxury Lodges at Credit Crunch Prices!!

Advantages: Superb, Spacious Accommodation, Obliging Staff, Good Leisure Facilities
Disadvantages: Expensive if paying full price, You really need a car due to location

...Background Having been fortunate enough to have stayed at Duchally Country Estate on a number of occasions now, I feel it is time to share my experience with the world. Where Is It? Set in the beautiful and tranquil Perthshire countryside, Duchally is a stones throw from Gleneagles, Auchterarder. About an hours drive from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and only 15 minutes from Perth, it is conveniently located for many tourist attractions. What Is It? Duchally Estate consists of a 4 star hotel and 55 five star self catering lodges with set in 27 acres of green and leafy grounds. I have never stayed in the hotel and this review relates solely to the self catering lodges. Duchally is part of the Club La Costa group which boasts a worldwide portfolio of hotels and resorts...

Review of Duchally Country Estate

Calm Down

Advantages: Very comprehensive coverage of The Open
Disadvantages: Get a little over excited

...the time to follow all the action and I believe every one of the 156 competitors in The Open got some coverage. Radio 5 in contrast decides its agenda and follows it rigorously. This agenda means according to the Beeb Woods, Montgomerie, and Clarke are playing in The Open with some other players. To listen to them you would not know Woods playing partners have been Thomas Levet and Angel Cabrera as they are never mentioned. The Talk Sport commentators include ex-professional golfer Richard Boxall. I once saw Boxall playing in the Scottish Open at Gleneagles and remember him playing a tee shot during which there was a loud crack. Unfortunately it was Boxall ‘s leg breaking and he was out of the game for a while. Boxall makes a good commentator but the constant homely references to ‘Boxy’ from the others commentators grates...
