The Boredom Of Gloucester

Advantages: Nightlife
Disadvantages: Shops, tourist attractions

...So you want to know about Gloucester? Well there?s not much to say really. Its an average city - shops, pubs, clubs, cinema etc. I have lived in Gloucester all my life and its not as great as people think. It is easy enough to get to. The main way is by using the M5 which is like ant other motorway - fine except at rush hour. When you get nearer to Gloucester you will need to use the ring roads which are busy all the time and usually grid locked at peak times due to the amount of offices nearby. There is a train station which is 2 minute walk from the town centre and Gloucester does have a park and ride scheme. There is even an airport at Staverton (15 minutes away by car) but that generally caters for people who want flying lessons and who own a little 2/4 seater planes. The main tourist attraction is the cathedral...

Munster's Fairytale, Gloucester's Nightmare

Advantages: Position in the Zurich Premiership
Disadvantages: Shaky Form

...So that was it, at kick off time last Saturday the task for both teams was clear, Munster had to score 4 tries and win by 27 points, and Gloucester had to stop them, in order for each team to stand a chance of going through to the next round of the Heineken Cup. Seems clear enough, but did the teams understand this? Munster it seems, yes, but oddly, looking at Gloucester's performance, for them you would have to say no. So what went wrong? Somewhere the blame has to fall. Either the coach, Nigel Melville did not make it clear to the players exactly what needed to be done, or the players, themselves, chiefly Phil Vickery (the captain), or Ludovic Mercier (the kicker), did not put the game plan into action. Gloucester were top of the group, in pole position, and looked set to go through to the next round, so much so that they could...

The Gloucester-A Fine Pub

Advantages: Good location. Good drinks. Good Food. Interesting decor.
Disadvantages: Difficult to find any

...After shopping in Knightsbridge, Sloane square or the King's Road if you want a relaxing hour or so in an excellent pub I would recommend a trip to The Gloucester, at No 187 Sloane Street in nearby Knighsbridge. What a splendid place it is.! It is very near the Harvey Nichols department store and reputedly the pub was named after the famous Glorious Gloucester regiment, who won battle honours in the Korean war. Sadly this famous infantry regiment has been amalgamated into other regiments. Belying its name this fine pub has a decided military feel about it with numerous original oaintings and memororabilia. It is located on two floors and serves up a very wide range of British real ales as well Continental lagers, wine and spirits. There is a separate dining area if you fancy a hearty pub lunch. The nearest underground station to this...

Review of The Gloucester (London)

Dr Foster went to Gloucester...

Advantages: The Folk Museum; the Docks; Bookends!
Disadvantages: The disgustingly dirty bus station (and to a lesser extent, the rail one)

......and, had he not fallen in that puddle, would have happened upon a most interesting city. Gloucester is a place steeped in history and tradition, and with some fascinating museums and excellent shops. The problem is that many people are so repelled by their initial contact with the place that they never get that far. The main culprit for this is the truly, utterly filthy bus station. It's a brutal concrete structure shoehorned in between anodyne 1960s blocks, and even manages to make Digbeth Coach Station seem luxurious, which is really saying something. There are huge piles of pigeon droppings everywhere - and I mean *everywhere* - which appear never to be cleaned up. There's nowhere remotely comfortable to sit. The lighting is poor. And, most unforgiveable of all, the timetable information is, to put it mildly, abysmal...

Gloucester, city of life

Advantages: Doesn't take up too much space on a map, good for rugby, makes you feel better about yourself and your own town.
Disadvantages: When ice forms in Gloucester, people say hell's frozen over.

...I live in Gloucester. Therefore, maybe I'm biased. But I've been to some really awful places in my time, and in my top 100 worst places to be, Gloucester rates somewhere about number 28, slightly better than Hiroshima 1945, but worse than in a locked freezer. Why do I feel like this? Let's take a virtual tour, shall we? Most visitors to Gloucester arrive at the bus station via the National Express. Ok, have we got off the bus? Good. Now, try to avoid all the pigeon shit that seems to rain from the roof, and hold on to your wallet. When the bearded man who hasn't changed his clothes since 1987 comes towards you and demands alcohol, run. Do not try to hide in the Photo-me booth because there's already a heroin addict in there, and he's not good at aiming the needle. Once you've run out of the bus station, you hit the taxi rank...

Go to Gorgeous Gloucester.

Advantages: A beautifully friendly City where there is plenty to do and see.
Disadvantages: None

...I've been to Gloucester twice. I have friends who live there and my visits encompass a stay, over a weekend, catching up with the latest family news and gossip and exchanging old memories. I never really "looked", at Gloucester until just lately; the second time that I visited. Did you know that it is home to Britain's most inland port? I only found out, during conversation that it recently celebrated its BI-centennial, which is techno speak for 200th anniversary. Once the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal had been built to link the City with the Bristol Channel, giving grain ships access to the docks, the area never looked back - at one time, ships would apparently queue for miles along the canal waiting to unload grain and timber. This does not happen any more but there are about 15 red brick, Victorian warehouses which...

join the fun in Gloucester

Advantages: beautiful area and improving
Disadvantages: room for improvement

...In my eyes the public is constantly underrating Gloucester, Little do they know what beauty Gloucester has to offer. Gloucester is set between several hills; most of these hills still remain greatly untouched and are great points for viewing nature. Gloucester also contains some great Tourist attractions and family days out, which everyone will enjoy. Historical Tourist Attractions ----------------------------------- Gloucester does have some astonishing historical attractions that are currently being upgraded. The main one is the Historical Docks located in the centre of the city. This attraction is currently being refurbished in many ways including a lot of money being spent on the project. Recently, dock front apartments were built and put on the market. These properties were built inside the listed warehouses to put some...

5 star Holiday Inn Express - Gloucester south

Advantages: Standards Service Value for Money
Disadvantages: None in my experience

...The market for this type of accomodation has become very competitive in recent years and as with all things, there are winners and losers. In my opinion the product offered by Holiday Inn Express is 1st class in terms of standards, service and value for money. The Holiday Inn Express can be best described as an upmarket Travelodge. Ideal for business and leaisure use. I recently stayed at the company's Gloucester South hotel and found the accommodation, service, location and facilities to be beyond criticism. I booked my stay after viewing the company's site on teletext (page 262) and secured a significant discount on brochure prices. The £37.50 room rate (not per person)per night bought me a 3 bedded room with en-suite facilities and all the trimmings. Amazingly a hefty buffet breakfast was also included and check in/check out...

Gloucester's Great

Advantages: A great place to be
Disadvantages: The Bus Station

...I?ve lived in Gloucester my whole life. Many people think Gloucester is a horrible place to be. I used to think Gloucester was horrible, but most people think their hometown is crap and boring. The only negative would be the tramps and the bus station. There are many great things about it, for example the Docks. There is a lot of history there and is something to proud of. Every Christmas Father Christmas comes on a boat and many other boats are there decorated, it is beautiful. The teenage goths/greebos/grungers all usually go to the boating lake or outside Boots. But they usually don't bother anyone. The skaters all usually go to shire hall and skate there, they also go to parts of the NCP. Good shops in Gloucester include Woolworths, Boots, Ottakers, WHsmiths, Marks and Spencers, JJBs, JDs, Newlook, Etam, and a lot more...

Cheltenham and Gloucester Direct 30 works well

Advantages: good interest, easy to use
Disadvantages: none

...I was looking to set up some kind of savings account and having been a Cheltenham & Gloucester customer for years, and been happy with their service I decided to opt for the C&G Direct 30. The C&G Direct 30 is one of the C&G's long distance accounts which you access by mail, this kind of account encourages you to save as you have to give the C&G 30 days notice in order to withdraw any money, which is great for people who find it hard to save. You also need to invest a minimum of £100.00 to open the account. I set up the account within my existing branch of the C&G and the staff were more than helpful. Once the account is set up all transactions are dealt with by mail so you never have to go into a branch of the C&G, the only disadvantage of this is that sometimes it's nice to be able to talk to someone face to face if there...
