This 2 disk set covers two waterways that meet at Diglis Locks in Worcester. The Worcester & Birmingham Canal From Gas Street Basin in the heart of Birmingham, to the River Servern in Worcester, this canal was originally planned as a wide beam navigation, opening up a direct route for barge traffic from the West Coast ports of the Bristol Channel, right into the centre of Birmingham. Fierce opposition from existing canal interests resulted in a physical barrier - the Worcester bar - isolating it from the Birmingham Canal navigations and preventing through traffic. The canal was built wide beam down to Kings Norton Junction, where the money ran out. The line from here on down to Worcester was eventually completed as a narrow beam canal. Today, it's a popular holiday route, with stunning views across the Severn Valley. The River Severn The river Severn is the longest river in Britain, flowing for over 200 miles from its source in the Welsh hills to the Bristol channel. Calm, peaceful, idyllic throughout most summers, it's a popular cruising ground for narrowboats and river cruisers. It's navigable from Stourport through Worcester and Tewkesbury, down to Gloucester. Spotting Old Gloucester
Advantages: old pubs, timberd buildings, the cathedral
Disadvantages: does not feel like a city,
...th century building but behind it there's a 15 medieval wooden building that was the home of the Whittington family. The Dick Whittington was undoubtedly my favouurtie pub in Gloucester due to the atmosphere. The bar staff were friendly and welcoming to locals and visitors alike. There was a nice selection of reals ales with at least a couple of local ones. I can heartily recommend Cotswold Way...

Dr Foster went to Gloucester...
Advantages: The Folk Museum; the Docks; Bookends!
Disadvantages: The disgustingly dirty bus station (and to a lesser extent, the rail one)
......and, had he not fallen in that puddle, would have happened upon a most interesting city. Gloucester is a place steeped in history and tradition, and with some fascinating museums and excellent shops. The problem is that many people are so repelled by their initial contact with the place that they never get that far.
The main culprit for this is the truly, utterly filthy bus station. It...

...we are all in and that of the smoking ban one, the collapse of day trade seeing one-in-five pubs close down because of it. Its chick town centre bars like the Baroque in Northampton that have the biggest worries, high rents and no beer garden for the smokers costing the now vital weekend trade, and so have to adapt very quickly to this non smoking world, this particular bar literally having to...
