...There's a song that features on the soundtrack of many of my favourite films that goes: "No matter where we go, London, Paris, Rome, It feels like Anywhere, USA" It's never something I really understood, since to me those three capitals are all very different from each other, and to anywhere in the USA that I've been, but I figured it was written by someone who'd never actually left the States, and who based their assumptions on the Hollywood version of Europe that comes across in films. But, then I went to Bulgaria, and a week on my overriding thought is that Golden Sands could have been anywhere, really, or at least any package holiday destination - it has bits of Greece, bits of Spain, bits of Malta and bits of lots of other places if you take the time to look Though people who (a) live there or (b) stayed a small distance...

...at this hotel. ** Why Bulgaria? Why Golden Sands? Why Iberostar? We chose this destination for a few reasons (the weather, the duty free, the prices) but mainly, it has to be said, because it was one of the few places in the package holiday brochures that neither of us had visited, well travelled little minxes that we are. We chose Golden Sands for no specific reason, though once we did so we reassured ourselves it sounded just a smidge more high class than the main alternative, Sunny Beach. LOCATION Gorton Sands is a great campsite situated on the western coast in the Highlands of Scotland. It is situated about 1.25 miles from a small village called Arisaig and about 6 miles from a harbour town called Mallaig. Both of these places are situated in an area known as the ?Road to the Isles?. This is literally because the road ends up at its final destination, Mallaig, where you can then catch a Ferry to the islands of Skye, Eigg, Muck, Canna and Rum. Mountains Of Golden Sand

Advantages: one of the greatest sights on Earth
Disadvantages: very hot

...I visited it was dry, but still astoundingly beautiful, with the mosaic cracked mud and salt crystals contrasting with the golden red dunes and clear blue skies. It is photographer's paradise. The best time to see Sossusvlei is at sunrise, as not only is it cool, but the changing colours as the sun creeps over the dunes are spectacular. I was still driving down the 63Km road from the entrance gates to the car park as the sun rose, but it was truely beautiful. The huge sand dunes change from red to pale gold, and the sky goes through a whole spectrum of colours before settling on deep blue. As well as towering dunes, from the road lines of acacia trees are visible in the otherwise apparantly lifeless desert, which mark ancient underground rivers, the life source for so many of the local species. Bulgaria - Sooner rather than Later

...(bargaining starting at 20 levs for a 5 minute ride) Luckily the local buses in Bulgaria are fairly frequent and quite cheap. In Old Nessebar in the evening ,life centre around the bars and restaurants but there are cabaret bars, discos and clubs with exotic dancers in Sunny Beach. The two are connected by land train but for us Sunny Beach looked and felt over commercialised and one can only wonder at what the future will bring as some of the charm seems to have already been buried. Bulgaria is certainly cheap but prices in the resorts are considerably higher than in more out of the way places.For example a beer in the hotel was 3 levs but up in the mountains only 80 stotinki. A Thai Paradise

...I stayed at the Golden Sands hotel in October 2004. We paid £800 for a package holiday, spending 3 nights in Bangkok and 7 nights in Cha Am at the Golden Sands. The hotel was large but consisted mainly of German or Russian guests. We were the only British couple staying at the hotel which wasn't really a problem but it is always nice to meet new people on holiday. The hotel is about 2 and a half hours drive from Bangkok airport (our transfers were included so I would not be able to tell you how much this journey would cost you) Cha Am is a very small village and is close to Hua Hin. Our hotel room was spacious and had beautiful views across the pool and across to the beach. The hotel pool was literally 50 metres from the beach. ...We visited Haven's Golden Sands park in Mablethorpe in October 2007 as part of the Sun's £9.50 British holidays. On arrival you had to wait with everyone in their entertainment hall to be processed (given keys and maps of the site etc.), this was done very quickly and effeciently even though it looked like it could have taken for ever it was done quickly. I had a 2 year old and a 5 month old and was looking forward to all of the child friendly things. However, on our fisrt visit to the pool we discovered that their were no family changing rooms, so we had to take a child each and split up the swim bag. This was a shock as most swimming pools have either family changing areas or somewhere on the pool side to change kids, but not here. I feel an update was needed to the entire pool.
