...The Dutch are famous for many things - cheese, clogs, a relaxed attitude to controlled substances and prostitution, little boys saving towns by sticking their fingers in dykes and of course the bulbfields. What they aren't famous for - and no wonder - is great hotels and hospitality. Of all the countries I travel to, Holland is one place where I can almost guarantee to be disappointed by a hotel - and the Golden Tulip in Zaandam really did live down to all my expectations. I had a look on laterooms.com (if you haven't used this site before, do it is excellent value) and found the Golden Tulip in Amsterdam offering us a room for 3 nights in their 4* hotel including breakfast for a little under 300 euros. I was sold on the executive sounding nature of the rooms, its central location, traffic free area and of course the included breakfast. We arrived at central stn a little early for our check in time of 2pm, probably somewhere near 11.30, but we turned up at the hotel anyway and asked to check in. The staff were very friendly, took our payment upfront (rather than on check out) and added on the 5% city tax for foreigners (keep this in mind). ...As we head into the Spring months it is good to realise that we have the beauty of the spring bulbs to look forward to. Many of the supermarkets and florists have potted bulbs on sale already which are fairly inexpensive. Tulips have to be a favourite with many, there are so many varieties which offer a wonderfully attractive display of colour. Last year I planted some dwarf tulips in pots and although I had a good colourful show I have chosen to revert back to filling my tubs with the normal bulbs which provide stems at around 15 inches high. A few days ago I was walking around Lidl`s discount store and came across large bunches of healthy looking single tulips which were marked at £2.92 a bunch, considering these had been grown abroad and had been picked bunched and wrapped before importing they were such a bargain. Home at the Hague

Advantages: very clean, value for money, excellent

...Now not taking into account my 12hour journey on coach to the Hague, when we arrived at the Golden Tulip, for the price we had paid we were expecting a travel lodge of some kind, however much to our surprise the hotel looked very well presented with all glass windows at the front, looking into an exceptional reception area. The reception had all marble floors, to the right of you you had a bar with a well spacious lounge area and to the right 4 lifts to all floors. Considering there was a coach load of us, reception were very firendly and very quick in getting us all checked in and allocated to our rooms. All the lifts worked to all floors and upon entering the room, it was very bright, spacious, with a king sized bed and everything that you required for your stay, hairdryer, television with sky, tea and coffe making facilities...

Football Lovers dream location!

Advantages: Standard hotel facilities, if you are a football fan its right next to Man U
Disadvantages: No mini bar in room, little to do in the evenings,

...The Golden Tulip is located bang opposite the hallowed grounds of Manchester United Football Club. If you are arriving by train into Manchester Picadilly then its around a £6 taxi ride out to this area of Manchester. Its easy to get to those driving themselves to the hotel, its located just off the A56, with good links to the M60, M602, M56, M62 and M6. The hotel is what I'd describe as a standard business persons hotel. It isnt the sort of place I'd recommend for a lovely break because its a large hotel with no real charm of its own, but provides a perfectly good nights accomodation for those in town on business. That is what brought me to the Golden Tulip last year when my company held an exhibition at the Old Trafford HQ. You enter the hotel and walk straight into a large lobby.
