...The Mk2 Golf GTi is an iconic eighties hatchback. The model I have been driving for the last year is an 1989 8 valve GTi and is a car that has been a pleasure to own and drive. The handling is remarkably deft and capable considering the age of the car and handles as well as, if not better than, many modern hatchbacks. The car is also surprisingly powerful, with far greater acceleration than than many of the sporty new little corsas and clios etc. Most of these Golfs now have very high mileage but that is famously not much of a problem with these cars, many of which have been able to pick up an astronomical mileage. My own has covered nearly 100,000 miles which is actually quite low compared to most mk2 golfs around. MK2 Golf GTI's - Built to last!

Advantages: Fast, Solid, Reliable, Built to last, Cheap for Parts now
Disadvantages: Getting old, hard to find a perfect example

...Well what can I say about the MK2 Golf? especially the GTI model imparticular? I have owned 11 MK2's with 7 of them being the GTI model. They are very solid, realiable and will run forever! Not only being very quick, they are excellent to 'mod'. There are many things that you can do to a GTI to suit your style, add rims, adjustable suspensions or even VR6 conversions. If you are interested in this, there are many enthusiast clubs along with shows up and down the country. Be careful when buying your golf as some may have been thrashed, sills may be rusted or clutches may be on there way out. As when buying any car, check all points thoroughly and take a look at a few. Although parts may not be expensive, problems that may exist may end up costing $$$ (e.g. if the bottom of the door is shot, you may need to get another door...

LEWD AND CRUDE GOLFING FUN

Advantages: Fun to play, witty commentary,easy simple controls,good sound and graphics

Everybodys Golf 2

Advantages: Great gameplay, well balanced difficulty, 'each hole' save option
Disadvantages: Cartoon style characters, not 'photo-realistic'

...Having borrowed a friends copy of Everybodys golf, news of the sequel had me eagerly reaching for my wallet.... I wasn't disapointed. Whilst the additional characters, courses and variable clubs/balls etc. add an extra level of playability, the biggest single improvement is the ability to save between ANY hole rather than just at the 9th and 18th making the game available even if you only have a short time. "I'll just do a quick hole or two", the main danger being that you'll then be late for whatever you where going to as this game is seriously addictive, that 'quick hole or two' can so easily turn into a 3-4 hour session. Every review 'should' have its negative points, but I need to be hyper critical to find any with EG2. A couple of the holes, especialy the par 5's, are perhaps a little too easy to Eagle. Golf VR6 - 2nd hand heavyweight.

Advantages: Speed, comfort, vw reliabilty, vw resale value
Disadvantages: Its thirsty! If it does go wrong it can get expensive. Thief magnet!

...I have been a fan of Golfs especially the GTI's for many years since owning my first MkII 1.8 8V GTI. It was a very high mileage abused example, but performed fantastically despite minimal attention to servicing for three more years. When I was offered this 1997 example of the MkIII VR6 by a friend I jumped at the chance of owning another higher spec GTI. I'll get the specs over with first. The VR6 came in a number of different guises - luxury GT spec with heated leather interior and Air-con and auto boxes (more your older drivers car) to basic 5 speed manual options with cloth trims for the boy racers! My version was a rarity - AIr-con and sun roof but no leather interior with a 5 speed manual gearbox. All VR6'sare based on the same V6 2.8 engine block which is what I would call a "nearly V" 6 as it has a very narrow V profile more...

Advantages: provides the driver with a magical mix of class and power in one small package
Disadvantages: hard to find a mk golf in pristine condition but when found well worth it!

Disadvantages: Expensive to buy, not as big as some might hope

Many testers have criticised the 2.0 litre oil-burner, but in the Golf it seems considerably less coarse than in many of the cars the engine has been donated to since its release. Odyssey 2 ball white hot golf putter

Advantages: Excellent allignment, nice even balanced feel.
Disadvantages: Not cheap, takes time to get used to.

...My overall putting ability was never too bad but somedays it can be just plain awful, i decided after much deliberation that i needed a better tool for the job, i was fed up of missing short putts for par and walking away feeling like i could have done better, so i went out and spent £50 for a 2nd hand Odyssey 2 ball white hot putter - im glad i did, mostly. First of all i would like to say that to improve at any sport theres nothing like practice, then more practice, this is especially true for golf, and none more so than the art of putting, after all its on the putting green where you play most of your shots (an average score of 90 would usually entail 35-40 putts, you use the putter more than any other club in your bag), The Odyssey 2 ball white hot putter is no gimme, you wont pick it up and start to hole everything on sight...
