...A large part of my job involves having meetings with clients at their premises, hence my company has a decent selection of cars for the consultants to use for travelling. Amongst this fleet is a silver diesel-fuelled 1.9L VW Golf Mk5 TDI. As I drive a Ford Mondeo, I am used to a silky smooth and straightforward ride, however the Golf is a very different animal. Historically, the VW Golf has had a stigma attached to it that it is a boy racer's car. I remember back in the mid-90's that a few of my older brother's chavvy friends were incredibly proud owners of the Golf. VW Golf Mk V - 3dr 1.9TDI

Advantages: Spacious 3dr, drives like a dream
Disadvantages: A few electronic teething problems

...I have had my golf for about 2 months and done around 2500 miles in it. I purchased the Golf as an ex-demo car. The first thing you will notice when you compare the Golf to equivilent 3 doors (Astra Sport Hatch, Citroen C4 Coupe, Renault Megane) is the sheer space. In all the others cars I struggled to get in the back (I am 6ft 3in) and getting out was even harder! In the Golf I can hop in and out with ease and with plenty of head room. The boot is also a good size - I have used the Golf to move out of my student house and was amazed at how much you can get in in one go when the seats are down. Golf has aged and has gone senile

...I have a 2007 MK5.5 golf hatch 1.9TDi - all I can say is that it is appalling compared with a MK4 golf I have (MK5.5 due to the new type engine with 132g/km CO2 emission). First a simple stupid design: fitting a chrome rim to a coin tray on the dashboard! It causes reflection in windscreen and distracts driver - a safety hazard. The fuel economy of the 1.9TDi engine has worsened a lot. With my MK4 Golf, I get 52mpg the usual way I drive. With the MK5.5 only 45-47mpg! The high-gearing of the 3/4/5th gears is murder! They are supposed to save fuel but they force me to drive in lower gears, costing more fuel. Thumbs down to VW! BTW: don't buy from Western VW Edinburgh - a bunch of crooks - you are warned!...

fiesta mk5 1.25

Advantages: nippy and easy to drive
Disadvantages: not alot of leg room for rear passengers

...added angel eyes, 1.6 zetec bumper which makes it look alot better, k&n air filter in the engine makes it bit fast and better acceleration. Wheel arches are already done so no plastic arches to smooth in like corsa's. Plastic trim is easily removed just glued on. Third brake light say fiesta when braking. You can also get lexus style rear lights. etc Bad points: Fiestas main problems are rust which is not as bad in the mk5 as some of the old ones, i have some on the door seals and some small spots on body work which can easily be fix. Suspension, mine is ok at the moment, fingers crossed it stays tht way. Switch in boot sometimes doesn't work so light wont come on. I've delocked my car as you can get into some other fords with your key as i found out, when i got in the wrong car and thought where the baby seat come from....

Advantages: Reliable classic. Powerful, agile and still looks great.

...The Mk2 Golf GTi is an iconic eighties hatchback. The model I have been driving for the last year is an 1989 8 valve GTi and is a car that has been a pleasure to own and drive. The handling is remarkably deft and capable considering the age of the car and handles as well as, if not better than, many modern hatchbacks. The car is also surprisingly powerful, with far greater acceleration than than many of the sporty new little corsas and clios etc. Most of these Golfs now have very high mileage but that is famously not much of a problem with these cars, many of which have been able to pick up an astronomical mileage. My own has covered nearly 100,000 miles which is actually quite low compared to most mk2 golfs around. MK2 Golf GTI's - Built to last!

Advantages: Fast, Solid, Reliable, Built to last, Cheap for Parts now
Disadvantages: Getting old, hard to find a perfect example

...Well what can I say about the MK2 Golf? especially the GTI model imparticular? I have owned 11 MK2's with 7 of them being the GTI model. They are very solid, realiable and will run forever! Not only being very quick, they are excellent to 'mod'. There are many things that you can do to a GTI to suit your style, add rims, adjustable suspensions or even VR6 conversions. If you are interested in this, there are many enthusiast clubs along with shows up and down the country. Be careful when buying your golf as some may have been thrashed, sills may be rusted or clutches may be on there way out. As when buying any car, check all points thoroughly and take a look at a few. Although parts may not be expensive, problems that may exist may end up costing $$$ (e.g. if the bottom of the door is shot, you may need to get another door...
