Secrets of the Gower Peninsula.
Advantages: Stunning views, pristine and clean beaches, never too busy.
Disadvantages: The Gower is a fair way from most other places
...I lived in Swansea for three years between 1999-2002 while I was an undergraduate student. Clearly it wasn't all work and alot of my 'play' time was spent exploring the Gower Peninsula. A stunning and relatively unknown little gem tucked away in South Wales, The Gower was the first place in Britain to be designated as an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' in 1949 and it truly lives up to this honour.
Getting there and Away.
**************************
You can get to the Gower in between 20 minutes and a hour from Swansea, if you're driving, depending on which bit you want to go to. Buses also run but these are sporadic and unreliable. You'd really be much better off in a car. The roads are good, although they are generally single track and wind back and forth which can make for slow progress should you get stuck behind...

Gower Holiday Village
Advantages: Wonderful beaches, and countryside and great food.
Disadvantages: Some beaches are inaccessable to some people due to steep climbs down, and back up cliffs.
...I have to disagree with Walshies comment and agree with LJJames. There are many bungalows on the Gower Holiday village, about 70 I think. I believe you can book directly with the holiday village, which may well be what Walshies did, to get his poor accomodation, but there are many bungalows that are privately owned, one of which we booked. See www.number62.co.uk.
No. 62 was very comfortable indeed. The beds are the best I have every slept in away from home, like marshmellows! The crockery and pots and pans were the quality in any normal home, and not junk bought from a thrift shop. The whole ambiance was modern, clean, functional and welcoming, and it truly was a pleasure to stay there. Jules (the owner) has dogs and very much welcomes dogs (there are thows on sofa's and dog bowls and stone and wooden floors...

The Sands of Time.
Advantages: Breathe-taking scenery, peaceful, lots to see and do.
Disadvantages: No Larger-louts. no crime.
...Can you keep a secret? I'm asking this because I have wanted for a long time to introduce you to one of South Wales best kept secrets, The Gower Peninsula. In my heart I want it to remain, as I've always known it, an untouched part of Wales without all the trappings of commercialisation. Yet every year more people are drawn to this place with its many beautiful beaches and its air of a place unspoilt by time. I'm going to take you on a journey of exploration referring sometimes to its history but always keeping in mind that to set foot here the traveller must conform to the restrictions placed on the area by the National Trust.
It's not a large place but due to its wild and windswept moors it can take the traveller up to an hour to reach it's furthermost point where the estuary of the River Burry flows into Broughton Bay...

Croeso i Gymru.
Advantages: See review.
Disadvantages: None known.
...The Gower Peninsula is one of those places that, although it is close to a city would not seem so - it is a rural setting, with urban life on its doorstep. Let me explain!
Gower, although not an actual 'Area of Outstanding Beauty'; 'National Park' and that (or whatsoever you want to call it!), is still in my mind an area where paradise is all but felt.
As already noted, it is on the doorstep of a city - Swansea. The very second you leave here, you meet the awesomeness of the area. In order to fully respect it, just go there! Like most things, you can never appreciate things without being there for yourself.
On arriving, you will find a whole host and mixture of things to do. From coastal paths; through country village pubs; to spectacular views, even to surfing beaches - there is something to do for all of the family. There...

Something for everyone - an amazing place
Advantages: Scenery, beaches, sightseeing, walks, village pubs
Disadvantages: Small roads, campsites that fill up too quickly
...There is no better place where you can enjoy a day trip, a weekend, a week or even a longer holiday surrounded by such fantastic scenery and friendly people.
Just a 3 and a half hour drive from London (to the further point on the peninsula) it is very easy to get to - either a direct train service (to Swansea) or just 1 motorway (M4) to contend with. The Gower is mostly comprised of small rural villages but there are several larger urban areas there too which adds to the variety. Due it's rural nature a car is essential when visiting. You then have the option for going further afield to visit other attractions nearby such as Pembrokeshire to the west for more scenery and beaches or Cardiff to the east for shopping and culture.
There are 2 main routes into the Gower, along the south through Swansea or along the north through...

More sheep than people
Advantages: Beautiful coastal scenery
Disadvantages: Not for thrill seekers
...The Gower Peninsula is how I imagine Cornwall was 30 or 40 years ago before it was discovered and turned into an endless round of surf shops, nightclubs and tea rooms. That it has not ended up as commercialised as Cornwall can be attributed to a number of factors. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, the Gower (Gŵyr) was designated Britain?s first AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) by the National Trust in 1956. Currently around 11% of the area of the Gower is owned and protected by the National Trust. Secondly, the Gower is tucked away behind Swansea (Abertawe in Welsh). I?ve heard the Gower referred to as a suburb of Swansea, and perhaps descriptions such as this have allowed it to retain some of its obscurity. It is certainly close to Wales? industrial heartland city, but is literally light-years away in terms...

A fab city
Advantages: great location
Disadvantages: could be improved in certain areas
...As a former resident of Swansea and having lived in several places around the UK and abroad I believe I have a fairly good persective anout Swansea. This is a city that has all the potential to be a great destination located on the Eastern edge of the gower penisula and on the sea front it self, the location is fantastic.
The City centre itself has a wide range of shops and has recently been undergoing redevelopment over the last couple of years. The main streets are 'The Kingsway', 'High Street' and 'Oxford Street' which have be subject to this redevelopment. Oxford street has the majority of shops located there including Burtons, Marks and Spensor, Warehouse, Zara, to name but a few, and the 'Quadrant' shopping centre is located just off this street containing WH Smiths, Debinghams, Boots, HMV and more...

One of many
Advantages: JR and Hancock
Disadvantages: A bit dull at times
...This was alright when it started, but it started going downhill some time ago when they started believing their own publicity. Now Jonathan Ross is one of the resident panelists it seems to have undergone a bit of a revival but it's now becoming very much the JR show.
It started off as another from the Have I Got News For You stable with Nick Hancock the question master chairing a sports quiz between two teams captained by cricketer David Gower and footballer Gary Lineker. They each had a resident comic on their side, Lee Hurst with Gower and Rory whatsisname with Lineker. Whe Hurst defected they had a revolving panelist for a while, but they've now settled on Ross (or is it Woss).
It's a bit hit and miss at times but does have some very funny bits in it at times. It very much depends on who the guests are I suppose.
I can...

nineteen eighty five series, captaincy against the australians resulted in victory for the england side once again. The commentator declares "life is very good for david gower right now". Also the former essex main batsman is also shown scoring well, and hitting some beautiful shots.
in search of fast revenge for the nineteen eighty five defeat, australia led by allan border, the bloke with the moustache, his team hits back along with great examples of bowling from terry alderman.

Hilarious :-)
Advantages: Very funny, original format
Disadvantages: None really
...They Think It's All Over is a late night game show on BBC 1 hosted by Nick Hancock. There are two teams captained by Gary Lineker & David Gower, with regular teammates Jonathan Ross & the excellent Rory McGrath & two guest sports stars. Each team has to answer questions in each round, including a round where the teams guess the names of famous sports stars from clues given & a round where they are blindfolded & get to feel a celebrity to try to guess their identity ! So, as you can see, it is an original format & makes a nice change from the old tried & tested formulas of game shows on TV. It has a sporting theme, but can be enjoyed by anyone, as it is very funny & often has us laughing out loud. Highly recommended....
