Tom Tom ONE XL Europe

Advantages: Large Screen, easy to follow, clear display

...The Tom Tom ONE XL Europe is one of the easiest car navigation devices to use. It is mostly self explainatry but if you are unsure how to use it, the manual is very specific and very easy to understand. In my opinion the actual software that is installed on it is excellent. When driving, it is easy to follow all of the instruction that are being said by the automated voice. The one concern with this product is the very short battery life and sometimes, when it has been previously been connected to the computer to install updates, the system gets stuck and freezes. It has to be reset for it to function properly again and then it takes up to ten minutes!! There are many options that you can choose when planning your route so you drive the route that is most suitable for you. Other than the one disadvantage, it is a very good car navigation...

Scratches - deep scratches - all over the sat nav. So I boxed it all back up and went back into Halfords. Served by the same person - baring in mind, it's the assistant manager. I told her the situation and that I wasn't pleased. She said, "I must of forgotten to tell you the sat nav I sold you was originally a display model". TomTom Western Europe, let Jane take the strain.

Advantages: Stress free travelling, comprehensive, clear instructions, cheap
Disadvantages: Some very minor glitches in confusing bends with turns

...I recently reviewed the TomTom one, which we bought with the Western Europe maps, and I have been waiting to put Jane (our name, after the voice) through her paces in rural France. As with all TomTom maps, easy to see, easy to use, easy to understand, and easy to update. Absolutely fantastic, I have no idea how we ever coped without her/it. From getting off the ferry, the map/navigation was spot on, good clear instructions, in plenty of time, and the first time I have ever got through Paris without a hitch. To give you an idea of how good, we bought a local map of where we were going on the Limousin/Perigord borders, that did not have the town we were staying in (I call it a town loosely) as it was so small, no problem for TomTom, straight there, which was welcome after 7 hours of driving. Magellan Explorist 500 Europe

Disadvantages: Reliance on poor Magellan Maps, no third party support

...I wanted a small GPS unit principally for my off road mountain biking activities. It's a real hassle stopping the bike unfolding the OS map and working out precisely where you are, on a legitimate bridle path or in a farmers backyard. When I saw the advert for the new eXplorist 500 at £350, featuring Magellan's topographical UK map, I thought this is it, a bit expensive, but just what I've been waiting for. The reality is somewhat different to the expectation, hence my disappointment. Now don't get me wrong, this little GPS unit is easy to use, it's fast and accurate and will display your position on it's simple and crude basemap as good as any other Garmin or Magellan unit. It will also give you an accurate reading of latitude and longitude or OS grid reference. But what's the use of a 16 colour TFT screen if the map on it...

Replace your GPS? i Dont Think So

...WHAT IS IT? This product is customizable trip planning software with an included GPS system reciever. All the now normall features for a standard GPS package are included such as Voice Prompted Directions so you can be told exsacly what to do and other features such as favorite settings etc. This package seems to me as if it was designed to replace the need for a GPS however as i will come to later it does not seem to fill all recuirements that it should. In my opinion this package is fairly good for someone looking to travel europe and not wanting to spend mega bucks on a new gps, But for everyone else this product falls short. DID I LIKE IT? Review of NAVMAN SmartST Professional Europe GPS software

The whole of Europe!

Advantages: great software, great usability, graphics, features, lots of maps
Disadvantages: price, it was not that easy to install

...it's a HUGE card. On mine I keep UK and Benelux (Holland, Luxembourg and Belgium). Whenever I go to a different country I need to use my pc to change the maps on my memory card. Overall this is a wonderful software and it is exactly the same as the normal Tomtom units but you use it on your (supported) phone, pda, pocket pc. It will work in most gadgets that run Palm Software and the list of supported units can be found at www.tomtom.com Apart from the price and the initial confusion when installing my first map the software is wonderful and I recommend to anyone who need any map for Western Europe. I got my PDA and gps units as a present, but the software from Amazon for £150. Apparently, however, the software is no longer available from Amazon. You'll just have to find it somewhere else!...
