...I recently reviewed the TomTom one, which we bought with the Western Europe maps, and I have been waiting to put Jane (our name, after the voice) through her paces in rural France. As with all TomTom maps, easy to see, easy to use, easy to understand, and easy to update. Absolutely fantastic, I have no idea how we ever coped without her/it. From getting off the ferry, the map/navigation was spot on, good clear instructions, in plenty of time, and the first time I have ever got through Paris without a hitch. To give you an idea of how good, we bought a local map of where we were going on the Limousin/Perigord borders, that did not have the town we were staying in (I call it a town loosely) as it was so small, no problem for TomTom, straight there, which was welcome after 7 hours of driving. A package of maps worth having

...Having used a Tom Tom Go 700 for a number of years, I decided to update the maps of Western Europe. Tom Tom uses software called Tom Tom Home which is used to download the updated maps. Having connected Tom Tom Go 700 to my PC, via a USB cable, it was a simple matter of clicling on the relevant icon on the Home Software, paying for the maps, and downloading them over the internet. Payment was straight forward. It is undertaken electronically either by credit or debit card, and the down load commenced. Because of the size of the map file, it took a little time to download (I do have broadband running at 8mb band width, so I suppose a lesser bandwith will take longer. Use of the system is simplicity itself. You are given a choice of country, and then you select address, or point of interest....

You need tom-toms to find your way

Advantages: Large clear menu for touchscreen. Quick setup to navigate to postcodes. Clear driving instruction.
Disadvantages: Poor POIs, Lack of route preview. Missing villages. No cam preview found.

...On the basis of good reviews I bought Navigator 6 Western Europe (Nav 6) for my PDA to replace an ageing Miomap programme. Having removed the Miomap programme the TomTom Nav 6 installed quickly and easily and after selecting a few options, was up and running. The selection of only 2 UK voices was very disappointing, and neither really appealed. Navigating to a post code is simple to set up, but I could not preview the route until the unit connected to satellites. I had to exit the navigation screen an select a view map icon to see anything. Typing in a town name is predictive, letting you select a town really easily. Menu navigation is easy with nice large icons and a maximum of 6 to a screen. The whole of Europe!

Advantages: great software, great usability, graphics, features, lots of maps
Disadvantages: price, it was not that easy to install

...it's a HUGE card. On mine I keep UK and Benelux (Holland, Luxembourg and Belgium). Whenever I go to a different country I need to use my pc to change the maps on my memory card. Overall this is a wonderful software and it is exactly the same as the normal Tomtom units but you use it on your (supported) phone, pda, pocket pc. It will work in most gadgets that run Palm Software and the list of supported units can be found at www.tomtom.com Apart from the price and the initial confusion when installing my first map the software is wonderful and I recommend to anyone who need any map for Western Europe. I got my PDA and gps units as a present, but the software from Amazon for £150. Apparently, however, the software is no longer available from Amazon. You'll just have to find it somewhere else!...

TomTom Navigator 6

Advantages: Detailed, easy to use
Disadvantages: Slow (but this could just be my phone)

...Nav 6 is the successor to Nav 5 and TomTom Mobile 5 and can be used on a number of Mobiles and PDAs. My review is based on my experience using an MDA Variao 2. I recently took a trip to Europe on my bike and got a copy of TT Nav 6. Not actually knowing much about where I was didn't give me much confidence but the Vario 2 with the Nav 6 installed was a lifesaver. Map are so detailed and being on the bike meant fuel stops were frequemt but I was able to plan this using the software. The 3D maps were good but I prefer 2D maps as I work a lot with paper maps and charts and it's just what I'm used to. The colours used were good, each screen was easy oto focus on with a good contrast of colours used. My experience in Europe was limited to planning and frequent checking of my route upon stopping. TomTom - slow, large but still simple BEST

...I use TomTom Navigator 6 with my mobile phone - MDA. I have also tested nearly all other software for navigation so i will try to compare. TomTom has the best menu navigation - it has only 5 items menu so it is possible to browse in menus when you are driving even if you have got a small display on your PDA. The menus are simple and it is very easy to adjust something very fast. Maps for TomTom are made not by countries as it is normally done by the others but by packs of countries so you dont need to switch maps so often. On the other hand if you choose igo2006 for example you can have all the maps at once and then no need to switch anything - there brings TomTom some difficulties when you are passing borders between two map sectors.   MAP READING YOU CAN'T GET WRONG

Advantages: directs you to your destination smoothly, great if you are on your own, no more trying to map read and drive, makes your journey safer
Disadvantages: sometimes gets the speed limit wrong, severe weather can make it slow by interferring with the satallite reception.
