Advantages: Make good use of the EEE PC Disadvantages: Safe mounting for car
...I am using the Asus EEE PC 701 with Windows XP installed for the OBDC on my 2002, 3 series BMW, and to maximise the EEE I wanted onboard navigator.
The GPS receiver is GLOBALSAT BU353 SIRFSTAR III USB GPS RECEIVER, bundle with PC Navigator 8 from Easydevices.co.uk
The receiver has its own software (GPSinfo) and after installation the receiver plugged in to the USB port, and soon found the available satallites displayed on the GPSinfo software.
Next I installed the PC Navigator 8 software. I was please to find the package easy to use, and was soon on the road testing the setup, which worked seamlessly. All the software and hardware are all very capable. The large 7 inch display of the EEE is more than adequate.
Only caution I might say , is check the route planned for you by PC Navigator as it will take to shortist route it can find...
Advantages: Very fast connection speeds Disadvantages: None
...After purchasing a Pocket PC (HP hx4700) mainly for use as a calender assistant and portable web browsing device, I soon discovered that it could also be used as a portable Sat Nav device as well, allowing applications such as Tomtom to be uploaded onto it, and for those who are interested in light aircraft flying, like me, memory map is fantastic aviation GPS program which can be used on using actual CAA aviation maps with GPS data overlay for flight planning and tracking purposes. The one extra hardware add-on which is needed to allow tomtom and memory map to function is a GPS receiver device. I had previously purchased a Compact Flash card extension GPS receiver which plugged into the Pocket PC's existing ports directly, unfortunately, it was very poor at satellite tracking and position locking, taking several minutes to lock-on to...
Advantages: Easy to use on a PC Disadvantages: Needs a GPS receiver
...PC Navigator 8 with UK, Ireland and Europe maps. I highly recommend this product. Easy to install and use. Simple user menu's, Find and Navigate, Address, Postcode or Places of Interest, help to find your way to your destinations. Also has Speed camera locations which will need updating from time to time. Voice assistant is pleasent to listen to.
I have this installed on my EEE PC (701 Windows) coupled with a GPS receiver (USB). Works seamlessly.
I would like the speed camera feature to warn me of up coming cameras, it changes from white (no cameras) to amber (Camera detected 500 yds) and red with an alarm when you pass the camera. Maybe I need to check the setting again to see if I have set this feature up correctly.
Because I am using the EE PC I needed to find a suitable mounting for the PC, and I tested the available mounts...
Advantages: A PDA and sat nav system in one Disadvantages: Looks cheap and tacky
...superior - it is acceptable for my requirements.
The Mitac 168 combines a PDA with a sat nav. system. And whilst the PDA is of inferior quality the Sat Nav element of the Mitac is most definitely not. It is on par with stand alone GPS units such as Navman, Tomtom etc.
The Mitac has a built in GPS receiver. If any of the readers of this review have ever had to sync an external GPS receiver to a PDA then they will appreciate what an excellent feature this is. I used to have a Toshiba PDA and separate GPS receiver. I never got the two linked up properly and experienced so many problems, including lost signals, no satelites showing etc etc. the list is endless.
In turning on the Mitac and pulling out the GPS receiver satelites are found within about 30 seconds - this is just as quick and efficient as my father's Tomtom.
The Mitac uses...

...saying GPS systems I am actually saying "Global Positioning System systems", but simply saying "GPS" doesn't sound right in this context!)
By some pure stroke of luck, Aldi's had one of those special offer deals on this week on a GPS system. Aldi may not have an overly good reputation on the whole but they DO have a good reputation for their electrical goods. They are usually extremely good quality, have long guarantee's (usually 3 years) and are of course cheaper than you'd usually find them.
Soopah! So there it was. The "Medion Pocket PC with GPS System". On sale for £249.99. With a three year guarantee.
The next problem involved how I was going to get one. It was about Tuesday or Wednesday when I saw this item in the Aldi brochure. Set my heart on it. It was going on sale on Thursday. I needed a GPS system for Friday. As...
Advantages: Lightweight and waterproof Disadvantages: Wrist Strap
...I am a commercial fisherman who relies on both exact and dependability in a Gps navigation aid.
The Garmin Gps 72 is a very dependable unit i use another brand on my boat while working and i have the gp 72 beside it and have found it to be a better unit allround, so i hear you all say, well this is why i mentioned my other unit, the other ones costs nearly £700 and is a fixed unit, with a smaller display.
My gp 72 cost me £130 and is handheld and portable, also with the correct lead available from Garmin you can download and update data from your computer or laptop.
I use mine for work when i am called out for the HM Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team that i am a member of and found it is very accurate and dependable.
It has a clear display excellent features easy to use menus and functions, setup is easy as all you have to do is...

Review of Garmin GPS 72
Advantages: Excellent sat-nav package at low price, well-spec'd handheld computer Disadvantages: Advertising unclear: hidden costs of full European package
...When I decided too buy this product, I wasn't specifically looking for a handheld computer, I was after a decent (but inexpensive) GPSsatellite navigation system; and the Acer n35 is not only the cheapest GPS-equipped handheld, it's actually cheaper than most dedicated sat-nav systems, so the fact that this device functions as a computer with numerous other facilities is a pure bonus!
You can easily pay £400 for a dedicated portable sat-nav system like the Tom Tom Go, and similar amounts for sat-nav equipped handhelds, but the Acer can be had for as little as £240 brand new with full guarantee. You see already the main economic advantage, especially when you compare it to the four-figure sums that car manufacturers charge for built-in sat-nav systems....
The Acer n35 is basically the n30 without BlueTooth capability...

Review of Acer N35 GPS
Advantages: Affordable; compact; stylish; good quality; combines two useful pieces of kit Disadvantages: No standard GPS software included
...The market for PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) with built- in GPS reciever is yet young, and it is this fact which makes the Mio 168 a rather nifty bit of kit.
Being one of the forerunners of its kind, the unit is remarkably well priced, although I would urge potential purchases to shop around- when I was looking, prices and packages varied wildly as the unit is not supplied as standard with any GPS software.
One thing which remained constant amongst all of the packages available was the comprehensive accessories kit. This includes a USB cable for synchronisation with a windows- based computer; mains charger (with UK and European socket adaptors); car charger; windscreen mount; and storage pouch.
Having recieved the Mio 168 Digiwalker, setup and operation of the standard PDA/ Pocket PC features was simple: a quick-start guide...
Advantages: Good Route Planner, Cheap in Price Disadvantages: Does not inform Instructions after wrong turn, Informs of turnings too late.
...different from the thousands of other route planners availiable on the internet for free.
Another problem i found with the system was that the alerts that tell you when to turn to not tell you as near to the turnings as they should. This especially becomes a problem on motorways.
CONCLUSIONS?
Instead of buying this system i would save up a little more perhaps for a TOMTOM GPS. I have had no problems with these systems in the past and i feel i wasted my money buying this 'alternative' to a GPS.

...The ASUS EEE PC 701 model is an extremely affordable, small and portable netbook with a 7" screen and built in wifi card designed primarily for internet use.
The standard model comes with a built in 2 gigabyte solid state hard drive and comes in a variety of colours and finishes ranging from matt white through to pastel pink. The white ones are probably your best bet as in my opinion they are slightly more stylish, echoing shades of the Macbook Air.
The EEE PC comes with a built in microphone on all models and webcam on most models and runs on a Linux based operating system although it can be configured to run on a Windows based system. Windows based versions are planned for release by the company shortly.
The Linux distribution is extremely stable with a Windows like user interface although for those not quite used to Linux you...
