On the straight Duplo rails

Advantages: good rails long lasting
Disadvantages: none

...Duplo train straight rails. If your child has a basic duplo train set, or you want to create one for them then you might want to buy the set of straight rails to expand it. This pack2734 contains 6 pieces. It costs £4.99p from the Lego shop http://shop.lego.com/product/?p=2734&LangId=20 57&ShipTo=UK. It is also available at other toy shops and toy departments for around the same price. Basically this set is just the straight train track pieces you will need to buy curved pieces too if you wish to make a circuit and you will need to buy a train to run on it too. The curved track 2735 is a good compatible set to make a circuit it is available together withy the straight track for £9.96p at Amazon Lego duplo trains are suitable for a child aged between 2 and 5 although slightly younger and slightly older children will also...

Not By Rail

Advantages: will get you from A to B - eventually
Disadvantages: need I comment?

...By way of opening, yes, I am aware that BR does not exist anymore. This however, is an opinion about the whole rail network and it seemed fitting to put it here, after all, as you will see, BR had its merits. Many of us rely on rail travel every day and there can be few people who have never been on a train. Whether we use the railways for daily commuting or the occasional trip away we should be able to rely on the fact that there will be trains, that they will turn up on time and get to their destination with the minimum of delay. That’s what should happen. In reality we are faced with a crippled rail network, poor rolling stock and high prices. Rail travel is no longer guaranteed to get you to your destination on time or at all. The infrastructure has got so bad that from every corner there is a cry. The public blame...

Rail Simulator (PC)

Advantages: Superb graphics, sound and realism
Disadvantages: Lack of route mileage and activities

...Step back to a time when the UK rail system was the envy of the world. Rail Simulator allows you to drive some of the greatest diesel, electric and steam locomotives ever built. If you're familiar with Microsoft Train Simulator then let me tell you that Rail Simulator beats it hands down with superior sound quality, blistering graphics and realistic train handling. The controls are also very similar to those of MSTS meaning you can begin driving as soon as the software is installed. My only complaint is that the developers have focused so much on the fine detail of the four routes included on the disc, that they have neglected to include route mileage. The number of activities provided is also quite low, but you'll find many more on the Official Expansion Pack and the UK Train Sim website. Definitely one to purchase...

Northern Rail

Advantages: gets you from a to b
Disadvantages: overcrowding, delays, cancellations

...I too suffer daily at the hands of Northern Rail. Overcrowding, delays and cancellations are the most common problems. After three years of travelling to work using this company, i am able to say that from experience, there has been no improvement in the level of service for the £300,000,000 tax payers money that is annually chucked their way. The service provided by Northern rail is thrown into sharp contrast by that of Trans Pennine Express who have invested in new trains and actually understand the concept of customer service. I read with interest an interview with the boss of Trans Pennine who explained that, when travelling on his trains, he makes a point of announcing his presence on the train to elicit feedback from his customers. I can only imagine what would be done to the boss of Northern rail if he/she was to follow...

Just doesnt grab me - sorry

Advantages: can hold things
Disadvantages: would you really need it? not as good on dahboards as it thinks

...Reason for buying ------------------------- I have to admit, I have no reason at all to buy this product. There is alot of marketing surrounding the JML grab mat though, so hats off to the marketing men for the high profile ad campaign. Why would I use one? However my Dad bought one for himself so got me one too. I did try to say I would never need it but don't really want to offend him. (look a gift horse in the mouth an' all that). Get your coat - grab your keys ---------------------------------------- I tried it on the kitchen unit just to see if it could hold a coin on the vertical, and (piccy included) it actually managed it. There was a good amount of adhesion when trying to peel the mat off the door again, but not sure how it would cope with a car dashboard. Most car dashboards I have seen are of that plastic...

First ScotRail - a company of thieves/liars, avoid like the pest

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: FirstScotRail people steal your money, advertise deceitfully, are always rude and lie to you

...I bought a return ticket London-Aberdeen online (departure November 23rd, return the 30th). It was indicated as flexible for return dates. In fact the ticket was NOT flexible. The journey itself was bad - they only allowed first-class passengers in the bar wagon. Moreover, the cars were not compartmented, so you could hear everyone snoring (this was a night train). A nightmare. From Edinburgh to Aberdeen there were traders speaking on the phone all the time. First ScotRail has no rule against noisy cell phone users, which renders the journey unpleasant. I went to the First ScotRail office in the train station in Aberdeen on November 24th, knowing I would not use my return ticket on the 30th. They were rude and refused to either change the return date or to refund it. They said I should just call the company. They wouldn't help because...

Moust famous rail bridge in the world

Advantages: staggering to see, great to travel over, great views, local pub
Disadvantages: cold wet and rainy

...The fourth rail bridge The bridge and me I have been to the fourth rail bridge a couple of times and over it once, it is a wonder of great Victorian engineering. From its colour to its size it is a beast and quite ugly yet uncannily endearing, the colour draws you to it like moths to light bulbs, you can see the big cantilever frame from many miles around. As you get ever closer you realize indeed how big and bigger feat it was to construct this daring/beast like entity, although it serves an less grand purpose of carrying trains in this day it was a mean feet in 1890 the year of its completion. You also find it amazing near the bridge, the noise the cold and the salty smell; this bridge is out on a limb and ravaged by the elements. We also know the famous painting theory of once one paint session is finished they have to...

Rail Privatisation....Good or bad

Advantages: more investement, new trains, doesnt require as much Government money
Disadvantages: Railtrack making a mess of things at the moment

...I have to say that my views have had to have been reviewed recently in the wake of the spate of derailments etc... that we have experienced on Britains railways. However I still remain optimistic about the state of the railways in this country and will continue to travel on them for a good while yet as i believe they are the best form of public transport. I use the trains a lot to travel between Burton and Yorkshire and I can still safely say that despite all of the problems I am still a believer that rail privatisation was the correct thing to do. For starters it generated a lot of money for the country and the Government of the time. Also people forget how bad things were under British Rail before thinking how bad they think things are now. I don't believe a Government can invest enough money into the public transport system...

the art of taking the piss by British Rail

Advantages: You get where you want to go eventually
Disadvantages: You pay a ridiculous amount of money to do so

...These people have got to be taking the piss. Surely i can't be the only person who has calculated that on average it costs just over £10 an hour to travel by British Rail. This is just ridiculous, i don't really care that much about cleanliness or timetable accuracy but i do object to paying over £60 for a 6 hour train journey. Recently i saw an advert in a paper offering flights to austrailia for £99, it costs about £130 to travel by train from the most southerly to the most northerly train station in Britain. If someone could explain to me why this is and where this mass of money is going i would be glad to listen. If the goverment want to get people out of their cars and onto buses and trains maybe they could get British Rail to stop charging me £3.50 for a 15 minute train journey every day. The only piece of advice i can give is...

SAFETY AND BRITISH RAIL

Advantages: SAFETY
Disadvantages: LACK OF COMMUNICATION

...Whilst I have a great sympathy with the British Public with reference to the delays currently being experienced on the railway network,I must point out that SAFETY IS THE MORE IMPORTANT ISSUE!!!!!!!!! The people who experienced the dreadful tragedy at Hatfield recently would surely agree that there has at least, been some good to come from this disaster inasmuch as that the national railway system has been thoroughly examined and a rather disturbing amount of problems have been found on the tracks nationally!!!!!!! As a traveller on the railway system I find the delays incredibly frustrating,BUT,I would rather be delayed to arrive at my destination safely than experience the horror of another Hatfield crash!! The management of British Rail would much improve the current situation with a drastic review of their communication procedures...
