Hotel: An American History - A. K. Sandoval-straus
When George Washington embarked on his presidential tours of 1789-91, the rudimentary inns and taverns of the day suddenly seemed dismally inadequate....... more
When George Washington embarked on his presidential tours of 1789-91, the rudimentary inns and taverns of the day suddenly seemed dismally inadequate. But within a decade, Americans had built the first hotels - large and elegant structures that boasted private bedchambers and grand public ballrooms. This book recounts the enthralling history of the hotel in America - a saga in which politicians and prostitutes, tourists and tramps, conventioneers and confidence men, celebrities and salesmen all rub elbows. " Hotel" explores why the hotel was invented, how its architecture developed, and the many ways it influenced the course of United States history. The volume also presents a beautiful collection of more than 120 illustrations, many in full colour, of hotel life in every era." Hotel" explores these topics and more: what it was like to sleep, eat, and socialize at a hotel in the mid-1800s; how hotelkeepers dealt with the illicit activities of adulterers, thieves, and violent guests; the stories behind America's greatest hotels, including the Waldorf-Astoria, the Plaza, the Willard, the Blackstone, and the Fairmont; why Confederate spies plotted to burn down thirteen hotels in New York City during the Civil War; how the development of steamboats and locomotives helped create a nationwide network of hotels; how hotels became architectural models for apartment buildings; and, the pivotal role of hotels in the civil rights movement. ... less

One of the most exciting tourist railroads in the United States is the Grand Canyon Railway located in northern Arizona. Operating on a line originally opened by the Sante Fe in 1901, it offers the unique combination of great scenery, exquisitely maintained steam and diesel motive power, vintage passenger cars and high speed running. You'll follow the daily Williams Flyer excursion train pulled by 2-8-2 steam engine 1960, which was thoroughly rebuilt in Grand Canyon's own shops. You'll also ride in the cab of Alco FPA-4 diesel 6773 as it pulls another Williams Flyer to the Canyon. Then it's a special Railfan Weekend featuring a double-header with 1960 and 2-8-0 engine 18. You're trackside for all the photo runbys and onboard for a ride in the cab of engine 18. On the return trip, 4960 takes the siding with the railfan special while the 18 and 6773 roar past with the Williams Flyer. Visits to the railway's locomotives shop, its museum in the former Harvey House at Williams, and the historic El Tovar Hotel at the Canyon's rim round out your tour of this fascinating railroad! ... less

This intriguing live album spans Bob Dylan's unique career--from an unknown teenager in a Minneapolis hotel room to the gnarled veteran countless world tours. It is a pleasing--if idiosyncratic--compilation, gathering together several decades' worth of rare and unreleased material on one disc. Highlights include a young Dylan ruminating on the traditional "Handsome Molly", the spectral version of "To Ramona" from the classic film Don't Look Back and a pulsing "Dead Man" from 1981. There are also otherwise-unavailable concert versions of "It Ain't Me Babe" and Woody Guthrie's " Grand Coulee Dam", plus a clutch of songs from 2000's acclaimed shows--the jaunty gospel "Somebody Touched Me", a rockabilly "Country Pie" and his first original song of the 21st Century: the Oscar-winning Wonder Boys theme "Things Have Changed". Complete with unfamiliar photos and well-balanced track selection, this is a welcome souvenir of the roller coaster ride that is Bob Dylan in concert. --Patrick Humphries ... less

David Rakoff takes us on a bitingly funny grand tour of our culture of excess. Whether he is contrasting the elegance of one of the last flights of the supersonic Concorde with the good-times-and-chicken-wings populism of Hooters Air; working as a cabana boy at a South Beach hotel; or traveling to a private island off the coast of Belize to watch a soft-core video shootâ?"where he is provided with his very own personal manservantâ?"rarely have greed, vanity, selfishness, and vapidity been so mercilessly skewered. Somewhere along the line, our healthy self-regard has exploded into obliterating narcissism; our manic getting and spending have now become celebrated as moral virtues. Simultaneously a Wildean satireA and a plea for a little human decency, Donâ?TMt Get Too Comfortable shows that far from being bobos in paradise, weâ?TMre in a special circle of gilded-age hell. ... less
