The Ljubljanica River flows elegantly down through the city, passing the cobbled streets and many cafes and restaurants. During my time in Slovenia I stayed at the beautiful, elegant Grand Union Hotel. I believe that my holiday was made a lot better due to my stay at the hotel. ***GRAND UNION HOTEL*** The Grand Union Hotel is a four start hotel situated in the centre of Slovenia. The hotel is split into two parts the business part and executive part. There are over 300 rooms in total so it is fairly small and quiet. Union City Blues!

Advantages: It's brave and a good introduction to Erasure
Disadvantages: It's pointless if you already know the band

...The new album by Erasure 'Union Street'(their 14th!) is a bit of an enigma, which makes me wonder if the duo have finally run out of ideas, or didn't want to waste them on us. However for the uninitiated this acoustic (yes pop-pickers you heard me correctly 'ACOUSTIC') album strips down the songs to their bare bones and lets out some of the soul as a sample of what they are capable of. Just as the band had recaptured some of the form of its 90s heyday with Erasure's return to electro pop heaven, ('Nightbird') Vince Clark and Andy Bell have gone all acoustic on us, just as the Pet Shop Boys recently did, before going back to their synths. The Grand is truly Grand

Advantages: A comfortable hotel and great restaurant
Disadvantages: Quite a walk up the hill or steps if escalator is not on

...I had a very hectic Christmas last year cooking for the family and generally doing far too much eating and drinking, so when it came to New Years Eve I was worn out, and to be quite honest just could not face another knees up to see the New Year in. My husband came up with the idea of going for a pint at tea time then back home for a night in front of the television. I agreed with that idea and then he piped up that we would have to go to bed early because we were getting up at six in the morning to drive to Scarborough and staying over night in the grand Hotel. Scarborough is about three and a half hours drive from where we live so we took a steady pace travelling over the moors keeping away from the motorway. It was great no stress and gorgeous scenery. A Walk On The Only Mildly Wild Side

Advantages: Canal banks are like another world
Disadvantages: Unless you retrace your steps, you have to come home from somewhere else

...and steam wagons. This is of course "By Order of the Grand Junction Canal Company". The word 'Junction' is ground away to make room for 'Union' but no-one has ever found a good way of doing this, and white paint just flakes off, so it's just a Grand???Canal, although not in the Venetian sense! The lock itself is interesting especially in summer, as many canal boat users know it as the start of the steady slog down the Thames valley's final terraces to the Thames itself, with much sweat being needed on the part of some poor crew member as they face eleven(!) more locks in the next 4 miles to the river. Up to this point, they've been spoiled by a straight 'lock-less run' from the Uxbridge area, or round from Paddington Basin on the Regent's Canal. The lock is also their last chance to empty toilets and take on fresh water, remembering of course...

A hotel Fit for Queen

Advantages: comfortable, well situated, good value for money
Disadvantages: none really, too expencive if you just looking for a place to flop

...miles south and very warm in Oct!) the incredibale cave system where you ride an underground train for a 5 k trip through the best caves ive ever seen (40 miles south) and of course Lake Bled, the prettiest spot in country and a MUST see ( 30 miles north) The hotel is not the cheapest around but at about £80 for a 4 star inc a first rate buffet beakfast its cheap for what you get,and what you get is a great place to stay,just ask the queen! Tip:- The hotel Union Executive and the Hotel Union Business are joined by a walk way ,be sure to book for the Executive, the other hotel is an old holiday inn bought up and added on for business users and it quite poor. The superb indoor swimming pool is situated in the second hotel ,on the ninth floor and is well worth useing....

Grand facilities at the 'Grande'

Disadvantages: Rooms are more basic than you'd probably expected

I have to admit that although I was looking forward to it I was a little disappointed to be moving from the hotel we had stayed at in Negril as it was a luxury hotel.
