Grantham - Despite the Thatcher Effect
Advantages: At least one great pub
Disadvantages: Trashy and depressing
...It didn't help that we visited Grantham on a Tuesday, in the rain. Nevertheless, having turned up, we were determined to have a good look round, take some photos of nice buildings and just see what the place was like.
Initial impressions did not exactly fill us with the thrill of anticipation. Coming out of the station, we were greeted almost immediately by narrow back-streets and row after row of red-brick houses, some of which were in a decidedly poor state of repair. All the while it continued to spot with rain from a uniformly grey sky and my enthusiasm already began to flag.
Eventually we found some signs pointing to the town centre, and we wandered around for a while seeing if we could find any unusual shops. There were none. There were of course the usual chain stores, and a small shopping mall which comprised almost...

Bangers 'n Beans Lincolnshire style
Advantages: Tasty, good value
Disadvantages: About 25% fat, but that's sausages for you!
...Mmmm?sausages?. bangers and mash, hot dogs, toad in the hole, sausage rolls, etc etc. Comfort food, nursery food, call it what you like, sausages are a favourite in many households and are considered to be an essential part of an English breakfast. They are versatile, cheap, quick to cook and tasty. There are lots of different flavours of sausages to choose from these days and one of the ones we like most is Walls Favourite Recipe Lincolnshire Sausages. (NB. Not Chefs Selection, but despite my emails, Ciao tell me to put my review here, for some reason!)
~~~~History of the sausage~~~
The word sausage is derived from Old French 'saussiche', from the Latin word 'salsus', meaning salted. A sausage is a type of food usually consisting of ground meat (usually pork or beef in the UK), animal fat, salt, and spices. Sometimes other...
The Whole truth and nothing but the truth
Advantages: See Op
Disadvantages: See Op
...Grantham is a small market town in the heart of Lincolnshire, with its good history, nice quaint buildings and excellent facilities, you may be fooled in to seeing a place of warmth and beauty, however this guide will not only point out the attractions, and good points of the town, but it will also focus on the faults of which every town tries to hide.
I myself know the town quite well, as I have frequented more than 15 years of my life. I know its beautiful architecture, excellent education and glorious tourist attractions; however I am also privy to seeing the poverty, violence and general sizest attitudes of many people within the town.
The town itself is split in to good areas and bad areas, this has been done through the years by word of mouth, crime figures and generally peoples attitudes towards people and status. It is...
It 'ent that bad 'ere, really
Advantages: good shopping, relatively
Disadvantages: some of the inhabitants
...One of the good things about Grantham is that it isn't pretentious. Not like Stamford, the next town south down the A1, which to my mind is far too precious and self conscious these days. Not only does the atmosphere of Burghley House spread, but coachloads of day trippers come to gawp at where Pride and Prejudice, or whatever, was filmed amidst its period atmosphere - once they put enough sawdust down to blot out the double yellow lines.
Meanwhile in Grantham the shopping beats Stamford hands down. For 30 years people have complained that Stamford High Street, once a good shopping area, is now all estate agents and building societies. But in Grantham there's a really good range of shops, you can get most things, and there's even a Marks and Spencers. Unusual for market towns in Lincolnshire.
But I digress. Yes, Grantham is not...
Teachers four in a bed romp
Advantages: Friendly staff ,good facilities
Disadvantages: Rooms too hot
...I recently found myself staying at the Marriott in Grantham when the union course I was attending could not provide accommodation at the training centre due to the numbers attending and to be honest I was not complaining as I expected both the accommodation and the catering to be of a better standard than the training centre and I was not to be disappointed and this more than made up for the inconvenience of myself and about 25 other colleagues having to share taxis in the morning and evenings.
Location
The hotel is located just off the A1 taking the exit for the A607 and the hotel is just off the second roundabout. It is located on the edge of an industrial site so there is no other amenities close by and the hotel is about one and a half miles from Grantham train station. There is plenty of car parking at the hotel...
Belton House a Beltin' visit.
Advantages: Beautiful house and gardens, good disabled parking, a lovely family church, childrens activities
Disadvantages: Short opening times for the house
...~~ Belton House ~~
It is coming to the end of our week holiday in Lincolnshire and we have one house left to visit, which is Belton House. Armed with my Hidden England Passport, we head off down the A52 towards Grantham.
Our Hidden England Passport allows us to get in on a 'Bog off', it covers five of the stately homes and castles of Lincolnshire, you pay full price for your first visit and get all the others on a buy one get one for free. The places on the passport are Belton House, Burghley House, Grimsthorpe Castle, Belvoir Castle and Rockingham Castle. It has its own website if you want to learn more which is www.hiddenengland.org .
We arrived down the long driveway leading towards the house and we approached the little ticket office, where we could purchase our entrance ticket. The lady took our passport and £8...
A tasty veggie sausage that doesn't leave you meat deprived
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
...Every so often, I like to try something a little different - I get a little bored of eating the same old thing again and again, so I like to mix it up a little . Thats why I decided to pick up some veggie sausages from the chiller section of my local supermarket - I'm not vegetarian, but I was curious to see how these measured up .
Now, I've tried veggie sausages of various kinds in the past - cheesy leeky glamorgan sausages for example, and vegetarian hotdogs . But these, Lincolnshire Style Veggie Sausages were new to me .
There are four sausages in a 200g pack, and they're pretty nicely sized, pleasingly plump. I think 2 sausages, with a bit of mash, veg and gravy would definitely be a good sized meal.
Sliding the plastic pack out from the cardboard sleeve (which was a tasteful pale brown colour with green accents, I looked...
Cauldron sausages - not the Frankenstein's monster I was expectin
Advantages: Easy to cook, tasty
Disadvantages: A bit high in salt
...Cauldron's Lincolnshire veggie sausages are one of a range of vegetarian products made by Cauldron Foods and were selected by yours truly on account of them being one of very few veggie dishes sold by my local tiny supermarket when I was in need of a quick and easy supper. I bought them expecting a bland experience and was pleasantly surprised by them. The pack of four sausages cost £1.53, which is pretty reasonable by ready meal standards.
The product
These sausages are dark brown with speckled bits, and are the shape and size of regular sausages - solid tubes about three to four inches long and one inch in diameter. They smell and taste like fake meat sausages generally do, i.e. dark and savoury, with overtones of onions and herbs. They don't have as much umami as many seitan-based vegetarian dishes, but they have somewhat less...
