The Red lIon - Grasmere
Advantages: Friendly and Comfortable
Disadvantages: In need of some updating
...cosy and a great place rto meet other people. All drinks and meals in the pub can be charged to your hotel bill.
The downsides of the hotel are that there is a car park but if the hotel is busy this can be limited and parking in Grasmere can get expensive. The pool is very nice but the gym is very small with only a bike and a treadmill. The reastaurant could do with some updating but the breakfast was very nice (we only stayed B&B).
Overall, I would reccomend this hotel, it is friendly and comfortable and a good base to explore the lakes....

A 'host' of reasons to visit
Advantages: Beautiful , unspoilt, picturesque village, heart of the Lakes
Disadvantages: Not much chance of 'wandering lonely as a cloud' in peak season
...****A village steeped in literary tradition****
The village of Grasmere situated in the heart of the English Lake District will of course be forever associated with the great poet William Wordsworth 1770-1850 who lived here at Dove Cottage for a period of 8 years at the peak of his writing powers, during which time he penned his most famous piece, the beautiful and evocative "I wandered lonely as a cloud".
All quite familiar I hear you cry, but I'm pretty sure you didn't know that Grasmere is in fact the very place that inspired children's TV icon Postman Pat's home village of Greendale!
So with that revelation fresh in the mind, please allow me the pleasure of taking you on a small journey of discovery around some of the other delights of what in my view, can only be described as a truly picturesque and surprisingly unspoilt...

Does exactly what it says on the tin (or at least the website)
Advantages: Comfortable, quiet, friendly, great food, great location for walking/sightseeing
Disadvantages: Not the place for minimalist, hi tech, wild party lovers
...I was attracted to the Bridge House Hotel principally by the location in Grasmere, but also by the clarity of the website. When booking a room for a couple of nights for a short break with friends, we were able to view the hotel and its surroundings, and then look at detailed photos and floor plans for each of the rooms. When we called to book, we were able to specify which of the available rooms we would like. We got a great deal at around £240 per couple for 2 nights DB&B.
Arrival was very smooth, with a parking space available for every room ( a bonus in Grasmere), and a warm welcome. The evening menu was available for review, and we were able to select from an excellent range of starters and main courses, plus individual choices of side orders.
Room was traditionally furnished and very clean and comfortable - but not minimalist hi...

Wordsworth lived here a long time ago .
Advantages: pretty place, lots of interesting places about Wordsworth
Disadvantages: touristy
...Grasmere.
I may not have been to Grasmere recently but in my lifetime I have visited many times both for day visits and for holidays in the area.
Grasmere is a tiny village in the Lake District, Cumbria.
Grasmere is well known as the place where William Wordsworth, the poet lived from 1799 to 1808 in a house called Dove cottage on the edge of the village. He also lived in other properties in the village, Dove cottage is open to the public and next to it is a Wordsworth museum. William Wordsworth and his wife Mary are both buried in St Oswald's church.
Sadly to say because of the links to Wordsworth this village has become a little touristy with many gift shops places to eat and places to stay. However Grasmere with its pretty stone cottages is a pleasant village for a stop over and visits.
We visited because we were in...

A lovely place to rest after a long day
Advantages: Location, family rooms, friendly staff, food,
Disadvantages: smelly carpets in the corridors, carparking at end of drive
...I fist stayed in the Butterlip How Youth hotel (have to specify which one because there are two in Grasmere) when I was 16. I was impressed then and when I went back there a few weekends ago, I was still impressed. Back in the olden days you had to do "chores" when you stayed in a youth hostel but you don't have to now.
If you're driving (and some people do drive to hostels) on arrival you can drive to the entrance to dump your luggage but you then have to go back down the driveway to park near the gates. This was once someone's grand home built of grey slate and there are very large gardens which are full of animal wildlife and birds- it's just lovely. It's not too far but disabled guests might find it a bit difficult.
Check in is with a friendly warden and you are allocated your room. If you opt for a family room as we did, you...

Wordsworth's 'little part of heaven'
Advantages: Very interesting to wordsworth fans, and also if you like old history
Disadvantages: young children might not enjoy it, you might not want to leave the village!
...Dove Cottage was the home of William Wordsworth from 1799 to 1808, the years of his major works as a poet. It was probably built in the 17th century, as a small hotel (hostelry)
In those days public houses were painted white as they could be noticed from afar. Now when we look at the buildings we think it is to make them look quaint!
It is situated just at the edge of Grasmere as you head towards Ambleside. It is on the left turning at the roundabout on the main road.
The Houseplace (living room)
This is the first room Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy entered on arriving at Dove Cottage on 2oth December 1799. Today we would call this the parlour. The room has been kept as it was in Wordsworth's day. This includesa window seat, slate floor and walls covered with dark-stained pannelling.
( The first time I went for a tour...

Shabby - but certainly not chic
Advantages: Location
Disadvantages: Service was dreadful
...I'd wanted to stay in this hotel for years and was really disappointed when I actually did!
My sister and I, our boyfriends and our parents spent a long weekend at the Wordsworth. It cost an arm and a leg as we booked half board. We really regretted that decision.
At dinner on the first evening, it took ages to get served. The meal consisted of loads of small courses, but they were really odd combinations of foods. My mother had ordered steak - she actually got three ten pence sized pieces of meat in a nondescript sauce. Although we'd booked for 7.30, with the slow service, it was really late by the time we ordered our puddings and all the nice things had gone already. We were quite surprised - the dining room hadn't been particularly full.
Walking around Grasmere next day, we saw a lovely bistro where the food was much more to our...

Thistle redeems itself!
Advantages: Great compensation for bad experience, good food, lovely location
Disadvantages: Expensive, inadequately heated economy rooms, inaccurate booking information.
...My friend and I decided to have a walking weekend in the Lakes in February (mad though it may sound!) and looked online for decent deals. We went for the Thistle Hotel in Grasmere as she had stayed in the Thistle Stratford and found it good, and booked it through a company called High Life Breaks as it seemed marginally cheaper than booking direct. Bizarrely, the Standard Room was cheaper than the Economy room (£71.00 each for 2 nights as opposed to £80) so we booked our twin room and looked forwards to the weekend.
We appeared to have picked one of the chilliest weekends in February to go and drove up through snow, but I had optimistically left behind my winceyette nightie thinking, "It'll be boiling hot, these hotels always are" and bringing a lighter one. I have learned my lesson..!!!
The hotel looks impressive, it was formerly...

Cottages in the heart of the Lakes
Advantages: Beauty,peaceful and spacious.
Disadvantages: the uncontrollable weather
...fantastic cottages, from one bed roomed to mansion size eight bed roomed. Short breaks and week long holidays lets, they also offer some great late deals and bargains.
It's headquarters are in Carlisle, with two letting offices in Windermere and Keswick, both are staffed by friendly and helpful people, if a little too laid back, (but what can you expect from living in the lake District).
The cleanliness of the lettings I have holidayed at is fantastic, so I assume that all the domestic staff are professionals and all accommodations are cleaned thoroughly.
I have used cumbrian cottages several times and have stayed at several different holiday cottages.
They have lets in Ambleside, Bowness-in-windermere, Windermere, Coniston, Hawkshead, Grasmere, Keswick, Ullverston and many other locations around the Lakes, offering a variety of holiday...
