...I have spent a week vacationing on Santorini. The reason why I have chosen Santorini over the other 1400 Greek Islands, was my profesor who goes there rugularly and is completely in love with it. All his describing of the island made me decide to go there. Santorini is a small group of volcanic islands located in the Aegean Sea about 200 km south-east from the mainland of Greece. The Greek islands are devided into island groups and Santorini belongs into the island group of the Cyclades. It's spread on 73 sq km and has a population of about 13,600 people. 1.) TRANSPORTATION Buses: They were my main form of transportation for exploring the island. Ia , Santorini Island , Greece.

Advantages: It must be the most photogenic place on the island.
Disadvantages: Can be exspensive but you can visit for the day.

...If you are on holiday on the island of Santorini it is likely that you will be tempted to vist the town of Ia which is famous especially for it's sunsets. Picturesque white and blue houses are built into the rock that overlooks the Caldera; this is an expanse of water formed in the past by the island volcanic activity. Cruise ships sail into the Caldera to view the attractive town,and the colured rock formations (cliffs) that have been created by the erruptions of the volcano and also to allow their passengers to vist the town. Restaurants, hotels, houses and hoilday properties are situated (perched on the cliff face) to take advantage of the view of the sunset over the Caldera. Ia seems an exspensive place to stay for a holiday on Santorini but it is worth while taking a day trip there; it is a very photogenic place to visit. You...

Santorini

Advantages: Beautiful and with the best sunset
Disadvantages: a bit windy as all other Cyclades islands

...Santorini island is one of the best islands in Cyclades. I have been visiting Santorini every year for holidays. It is a well organised island and a lot of foreign people visit every year. There are a lot of nice beaches to visit. Also there are a lot of organised camping areas that you can rent a place for cheap and camp wiith your own tent. In Santorini you can see the best sunset ever. It is something amazing and you can see that on the 15th of August at Oia area. There are a lot of couples around waiting for the sunset. Santorini is a little bit more expensive than other Greek islands but definately it worths the money. There are plenty accomodation around to rent so try to book in advance otherwise you might not find nowhere to stay. I recommend to everyone to pay a visit to this island. There is also a volcano that you can walk...

Advantages: Scenic and budget friendly
Disadvantages: Windy

...crater thingy) in the world, walking round these little white houses and blue domed churches is like walking through a picture postcard of Greece. From many of the numerous (and overpriced) cafes and tavernas there is a brilliant view of the ocean and volcano below and should you be tempted there is a cable car or donkey willing to transport you down to the port. From here its just a short trip across to the hot (read luke-warm) springs and mud baths of the volcano, or one of the smaller islands that make up the rest of the collapsed crater. Santorini is famous for its sunsets. When I say that I do of course mean 'famous' in the 'you haven't heard this until you come here and then you hear this everywhere you go' sense of the word. My own Heaven on Earth

Advantages: Breathtaking scenery never to be forgotten
Disadvantages: Prices increasing - possibly owing to influx of American Cruise ships

Advantages: no mosquitos low key nightlife excellent beaches
Disadvantages: none

...Me and my husband always wanted to visit santorini famous for its volcanic black course sand and breattaking scenary not to mention visiting some of the beatiful churches which are used on most greek postcards. We finally went last year with our 2 children to a resort called perivolos and stayed in a place called eleferia apartments. Now the journey time from thira airport was 45 minutes but wow to watch the scenery go by i was in heaven, the tour rep gave lost of interesting facts like there were over 2 hundred churches on their tiny island many are built for heroes of war or unreturning sailors and that they also believe the lost city of atlantis lies deep bellow the sea once being part of their lovely island. The green green grass of Greece.

Advantages: Much greener than greek islands in the east,some traditionally greek,not bad prices
Disadvantages: Can be rainy,some resorts overdeveloped

Fourka in Halkidiki (Greece)

Advantages: Gorgeous weather, fantastic people, great scenery
Disadvantages: Could perhaps do with a bit of a tidy up in places ?!

...My boyfriend and I wanted a cheap holiday - a week in the sun where we could relax and do not a lot basically! We booked an internet deal through Thompson Holidays for £190 each (incl. flights, transfers and accomodation) for a week in Self Catering appartments. Our flights were from Birmingham to Thessaloniki (which is the nearest airport to Halkidiki). The flight took around 3 hours and we then had an hour and a half transfer from the airport to our resort - Fourka. Halkidiki is split into three penisulars, Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos. These are near the north of main land Greece and are surrounded by the Aegean Sea. Kassandra and Sithonia are supposed to be the livliest of the three, although they are not busy or crowded. Kefalos, Kos, Greece

Advantages: cheap to eat out, nice weather and clear blue sea and plenty of water sports
Disadvantages: People of Kos don't seem to like tourists, Windy

...a car or scooter here as they're everywhere. We didn't hire so I can't tell you how much this is and the reason we didn't hire was because they do drive like maniacs in Greece even 14 yr old boys racing on their scooters so do beware of this if you are going to greece. My boyfriend did get up very early one morning to go to the ancient market but I wanted a lie in! He said it was nice and this would be ideal for the historians among us. There he also saw lizards. Karystos Relatively Unknown Outside Greece

Advantages: Close to Athens airport and unknown paradise.
Disadvantages: Discos and tourist facilities thin on the ground

...I lived in Karystos for three years and still visit on a regular basis. I got a job there, teaching English, purely on spec. It was one of those accidents that prove you've done something good at some point in the past. I just wish I could remember what! Karystos is a fishing town at the southernmost point of the island of Evvia. Evvia is actually the second biggest island in Greece, after Crete. This fact is relatively unknown, due to its being so close to the mainland. At its closest there is actually a bridge.
