Better legislation required to stop cruelty in Greyhound racing.

Advantages: Less cruelty. Less of a strain on rescue centres.

...I must admit. I used to go to Greyhound racing with my friends sometimes on a Saturday night for a bit of fun. We always had a great night out. Even though usually it completely emptied my wallet. But once I started to read up about the plight of the poor dogs used for racing I will never go again. I don't want to play any part in supporting this cruel sport. A great amount of research has been done in regards to Greyhound racing. Various cruelty has been identified. Not all breeders, trainers etc are cruel but there is still a big problem and a lack of legislation. Many puppies that will not be likely to make it as racers are killed. ...For the last 9 years i have owned a greyhound, when we got him he was 5 months old when we first brought him home he was a nervous wreck, you would have to put treats on the ground infront of him to get him to walk a few steps, he had lived in kennels all his life so i decided to give him a home. When i tell people i have a greyhound the first thing alot of people tend to say is something to do with attacking other animals, the views given off by greyhound racing make people think they are vicious animals but they really are not. Greyhounds make greyt pets

Advantages: Easy, friendly, relaxed gentle dogs
Disadvantages: delicate and tend to be easily injured

...I used to be a collie person. Then two years ago I adopted my first ex-racing greyhound from Greyhound Rescue West of England. I am totally converted and will probably never have another non-sighthound! My reasons for choosing a greyhound were: - I work from home, so I wanted a fairly low-energy dog that would snooze while I worked. - I wanted a dog with a short easy to care for coat. - I've always thought the shape of greyhounds was elegant and beautiful. - I wanted a quiet dog that wouldn't bounce all over my dog-timid husband. My dog has lived up to all of these. I love having a longlegged dog who doesn't attract mud and can be kept clean and gleaming with a quick rub down with a Zoom Groom once a week, and a quick rub with a towel after walks. Advantages: Gets The Owner Out Of The House
Disadvantages: Your Kitchen Has To Be Like Fort Knox!!

...,pears,palma violets,a bottle of childs cough medicine,a frozen loaf of bread.....the list goes on!Nothing seems to dissagree with him,he must have an amazing digestive system.This behaviour seems to be peculiar only to our hound as other owners have not had our problems.No matter how clever we get at hiding anything remotley edible he finds a way round it!! During a greyhounds racing career,their bodies take a lot of punishment,especially the legs and feet.This can often lead to problems later in their life.They are prone to corns,sprains and arthritis.They can also suffer from bad teeth due to the diet they are fed whilst racing.but regular check ups at the vets can keep on top of any potential problems. They are very thin skinned and can suffer from dehydration and sun burn in the summer and hypothermia in the winter so a good thick coat is essential...

Advantages: Get yourself a loving dog - and very possibly save his life

...I've owned my greyhound dog, Max, for years now. Like most greyhound rescue dogs he was a racing greyhound - there are thousands of retired racers in rehoming centres and not many homes to go around. Sadly I know many are put straight on to the "7 day list" and then killed by kennels that do that, because they will never rehome them all. But dont go out and start rescuing them until you know what you are getting. DISCLAIMER: all dogs are different. the following applies to many, but not all, greyhounds, and will absolutely not apply to greyhound crosses, who are completely different! So dont be put off by one thing - just ask for a less usual greyhound! Greyhounds make FABULOUS pets - if you suit them. They are NOT watchdogs, they will NOT play games and chase balls for hours (or sometimes at all!), they will NOT go on an all day...

...I have a two year old greyhound, she is called fimble. She is black with a white patch on her neck. I got her from a rehoming center for retired greyhounds. At two years old it is not uncommon for a greyhound to retire because of injurys etc. Fimble retired because she wouldn't chase the rabbit. Which is why we choose to keep fimble after they brought her to us for a home visit, as I have a cat, rabbit and 2 guniea pigs. When you rehome a greyhound they have to find the right one for you. I also have two children, all these things need to be kept in consideration when finding the right dog. Fimble was very nervous when she first came to us, as she wasn't use to anything, noise, cars, people. ...a very helpful assistant who then recommended me a dog named Jack. So, we took Jack out for a walk. He was gentle listened to me and didn't turn a blind eye to the small dogs. He was calm, listened to my commands and did not run too much. He was very gentle with me and was very happy with other dogs. We are now adopting Jack and collecting him in 10 days time!!! TO LOOK AFTER YOUR GREYHOUND Looking after a Greyhound is easy.
