Guernsey

Advantages: relaxing
Disadvantages: none in my opinion

...In August this year I am off to Guernsey, (One of the Channel Islands) for a fortnight. I spent many a happy, what used to be called the 7 weeks holidays over there, as a child and enjoyed every minute of it. And have been there since, and still enjoyed it just as much. I suppose in a way I am fairly lucky as my Nana lives in Guernsey, so I don’t have the problem of finding a hotel. I booked a direct flight from Manchester (UK) last week for £135. From: www.aurigny.com I have seen cheap breaks being offered in local newspapers though, so if you fancy a quiet relaxing holiday I suggest you go there. The island is only tiny so you won’t have any trouble getting around. You don’t need a passport from UK unless you are planning to pop over to France for the day. If France is not your scene you can visit...

Review of Guernsey (Channel Islands)

Guernsey-my roots- your holiday!

Advantages: Lots of history, great food.
Disadvantages: Too many cars. Quite expensive to travel to.

...My Channel Island roots are in my blood, and Guernsey will always be close to my heart and as an Islander, feel absolutely qualified to give a review on the little island I was brought up in. I was brought up with Guernsey tomatoes, freesias, German Occupation history, the sandy beaches and the quiet cliff walks, (that still exist to this day). The growing of tomatoes has gone now and the peacefulness is not quite as tranquil as I remember it. Having visited twice recently this year (2009) not for a holiday but due to a death in the family, I was still able to view the island and spot the changes! However, my opinion is based on what I remember in the past, and I need to whet your appetite to what it's like now! Guernsey is the second largest of what is known as the Channel Islands situated about 12 miles off the coast of France...

Review of Guernsey (Channel Islands)

Welcome to Guernsey

Advantages: Quiet and peaceful, yet has potential for good night life
Disadvantages: Can be too quite

...Guernsey is situated 50km (30 miles) from the coast of France and 130km (80 miles) from the south coast of England. It is the second largest island of the Channel Islands, the rest of the Channel Islands consist of Jersey, Alderney, Sark and Herm. Guernsey has an estimate population of 59,807 (calculated in 2001, may be more now) which is quite a large amount considering that the island is only 63.1 sq km (24.3 sq miles). Guernsey has its own government and own Laws (states of Guernsey, even though the Channel Islands are a part of Great Britain). Guernsey has great potential as a holiday destination; most tourism here is aimed at families all though I believe some people do arrange hen and stag nights here. The best time to visit Guernsey is during the summer i.e. (June-September) the temperature in Guernsey varies however it is...

I must return to Guernsey

Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: A bit expensive

...Guernsey is slightly smaller the Jersey being only 24 square miles, but it still manages to pack in plenty to do for all ages. There are beautiful, clean sandy beaches where the children can play safely, and rocky promontories for scrambling and exploring. The capital of Guernsey is St. Peter Port The streets rise steeply from the harbour and afford views of sister islands Herm, Sark and Jethou. Castle Cornet overlooks the harbour, a safe haven for working and pleasure craft alike. St Peter Port has a wide variety of shops and restaurants, so there’ll be something to suit everyone. We stayed in self-catering accommodation on the opposite side of the island at Grandes Rocques. It was very quiet with a long sandy beach. Since the island is so small it was easy to get to all the attractions either by walking, public...

Gorgeous Guernsey

Advantages: Too numerous to list - try it for yourself!
Disadvantages: Can be expensive

...I first visited Guernsey in 1995, and from the moment I stepped onto the island I was completely hooked. The place has everything you need from a holiday destination EXCEPT guaranteed good weather (more about that later!). It's location makes it ideal to visit from the UK, as it's only about 45 minutes by air from Gatwick or about two and a half hours from Weymouth by fast ferry, but it's also a good stopping-off point if you fancy a few days in France. A word about travelling - Condor Ferries has the monopoly on ferry routes from the UK mainland to Guernsey and Jersey so the cost of taking your car isn't cheap. It cost us over £300 to sail over last year by fast ferry (conventional ferry crossings are slightly cheaper but take about eight hours). If you're not going to use your car much it might be cheaper to go as a foot passenger...

Get away from it all in Guernsey

Advantages: Relaxing, chilled, quaint, beautiful, Sark nearby
Disadvantages: Easy to put on weight! And it might be too quiet for some people

...I have calculated that, even though i'm only 19, i must have been to Guernsey at least 32 times in my lifetime. This is because my grandparents moved to Guernsey when i was born (I have that effect!) and so I have been visiting once or twice a year ever since. Guernsey is a small island between France and England, and is part of the Channel Islands which consist of Jersey, Alderney, Sark and Herm also (in descending order of size). I have only been to Sark however and it is the nicest place i have ever visited, and would recommend it very stongly as a day trip :-) Sark (and the other islands) can be accessed by a short boat trip from Guernsey. Sark and Herm are the smallest of the islands - so small in fact that there are no cars which adds to the relaxing atmosphere, and makes it extremely peaceful. On Sark, me and my family...

The Guernsey Literary Society will make you want to read too!

Advantages: Unusual format and a novel storyline
Disadvantages: Sometimes the plot was a little far-fetched

...have just joined a reading club and this was the second book that we had decided to read. The first was a complete disaster so we all had high hopes for this one! The title was certainly intriguing and when I received my copy I liked the simple sleeve design with the Guernsey post marks on the letter. I have never visited Guernsey but I did visit Jersey for my honeymoon, I knew about the hard time the people had suffered during the Occupation so this made me even more keen to start reading. The story begins not long after the end of the Second World War, an author Juliet Ashton is contacted out of the blue by a Guernsey resident, Dawsey Adams, after he came into possession of a book by Charles lamb that she had previously owned. Her name and address were inside and they began to correspond. Juliet soon becomes intrigued by...

Review of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows

The new Guernsey Airport

Advantages: new modern clean building, close to St.Peter Port
Disadvantages: short runway, 3 airlines

...Guernsey only has one airport which is located in the central parish of St.Andrews (about from miles away from the capital St.Peter Port). The airport has recently been rebuilt to its new modern form similar to the design seen on many city airports (however a lot smaller). Guernsey airport only has a short runway that is suitable for smaller aircraft, the topic of extending the runway has been debated for a while now. The airport is small in size and very easy to get around, in fact there is only 1 departure lounge which leads on to 16 gates via a glass walkway. Disabled access has been taken into consideration whilst the airport was in its design stages, slopes are present allowing wheelchairs onto pavements and a large lift operates between the 2 floors. Outside the building textured surfaces allow the visually impaired locate...

Review of Guernsey (GCI)

Guernsey, Channel Islands

Advantages: Beautiful beaches, walks and lots of good food
Disadvantages: Difficult and often expensive to get to. Prone to fog at the airport.

...Although Guernsey is only 3 miles by 7, one end of the island differs greatly to the other. In the south, there are imposing cliffs that are easy to ramble on using the well maintained cliff path (often includes steep climbs) and towards the north are the flat plain lands where you can play golf or watch banger racing on one of the many beaches there. The beaches in the north and west are where you can surf, fly kites or just generally lie there and do nothing among many other activities, but if you want a sheltered little cove, the south west corner is the best. The Postman Pat-like roads are sometimes a bit scary to drive on, but they all tend to end up somewhere that makes it worthwhile. The islands are full of neolithic burial mounds, some of which have been well maintained, with one having an original wall drawing. There...

Meeting Helen Mirren and adventurous times galore!

Advantages: Alot of things happening so you won't get bored reading this
Disadvantages: Quite a long read as so much happened

...Isn't it annoying when you go on holiday to a place you have never been before for 1 week and by the time you are approaching the end of that week you feel you are just starting to really get into the spirit of things, you've found out so much more that you feel you could do with another week. Well this was what it felt like when I went to Guernsey in August 2005. I have written the majority of this review from my own experiences, rather than giving you lots of facts about Guernsey that you could read about in any travel guide. INTRODUCTION The Channel Islands consists of a group of 5 small islands: Jersey, Guernsey, Sark, Herm and Alderney. Guernsey is the second largest of these islands and is 24sq miles in size. St Peters Port is the main part of Guernsey and has a harbour there. It is at St Peters Port where me and my husband...
