Fathers Guest House, great place in the Cameron Highlands

...Fathers Guest house has the perfect location on a small hill overlooking the tiny town of Tanah Rata in the Cameron highlands. Situated outside the town, but only a 3 minute walk into it, it has fantastic views and is tranquil but still has access to any activities the town has to offer. If you call the owners in advance letting them known when you will arrive then they will collect you from the town and save the walk up the hill with heavy bags. They also tend to be one of the touts who wander the bus drop off area and so if you arrive by bus then there is almost always someone there who you can ask to get a lift up the hill. Driving up towards the guesthouse the first thing that is obvious is that this is a beautiful area. The views from the top go right across the town and amongst the rolling hills of the area. A cry in the dark!

Advantages: Good price, useful location, clean and comfortable
Disadvantages: Breakfast served only in room, poor breakfast, no lock/light working in bathroom

...and breakfast again in the future but I would really prefer somewhere with a little more public space and perhaps somewhere with the owners on site at night. Advantages: Good location
Disadvantages: Unwelcoming. Dirty. Cramped. Noisy.

...I've just returned from a wonderful visit to York. My trip to York was wonderful because of the beautiful city and not because of my stay at Holmlea Guesthouse on Southlands Road. It seems that guests come second to the owners at this guesthouse. From the very beginning when I was making my booking, things were less than professional or reassuring. I was asked to call back later because the baby needed to be fed. Alarm bells should have been ringing, but I decided not to be cynical and I called back later to complete my reservation. I was told that nobody would be at the guesthouse before 5pm and that I needed to state when I would be arriving. This was less than promising. I called the night before to say that we would be arriving at around 4pm and was given the code to the door and instructions for finding our room key...

Briarly Comfortable

Advantages: Location, friendly welcome, price,....and breakfast!
Disadvantages: Smaller rooms are not for cat swingers

...Now, let's be honest?for the most part in this life you get what you pay for. If you want five-star luxury hotel pampering, for example, you have to pay the going rate for the package. I'm not sure what that going rate might be in York in what is still a busy part of the tourist season (early September), but I suspect it's a teeny bit more than the £30 per person per night we were charged by the good folks at Briar Lea. I'll admit to throwing that figure in early because I want to put the place in context before telling how I found it & what I thought. The context is: most excellent value. What it isn't, is a hotel with dining facilities, spa, bar and lots of other fripperies that we didn't want anyway. South Hampton Guest House - ok

...My partner and I stayed at the South Hampton Guest House for a weekend in early 2006. We choose the property because it was reasonably close to the centre of Cambridge Township (about 15-20 minutes walk) and also for it's price. We paid £45/night for the two of us including breakfast. The general décor was nothing to marvel about, a bit pokey and very old fashioned. However, keeping in mind what we paid our stay was reasonable. The rooms (I think there were 4 or 5 in total) were on the small side. Ours was fitted with a double bed, a single chair, one bedside table, a small wardrobe with several drawers attached and a tv mounted on the wall. There was a little side tray containing tea, coffee milk and a few biscuits. There was very little room for much else and we had to store our 1 suitcase on top of the wardrobe. There was...

...The Anchor Guest House is situated in the city centre. From Dublin Airport, travel on the 747 (Easily caught from outside the airport exit, well signposted and regular) Stay on the bus until Dublin Bus Station, the Anchor Guest House is situated in Lower Gardiner Street which is just round the corner from the bus station. The Guest House is a town house with a new extension on the back. There are a few steps to go up and I have not seen a ramp. From the entrance hall, up about 10 stairs you walk through a sitting room to the extension which has a lift. ...I dont normally stay in guest houses unless in South Africa or Canada where the B&B style is much different. There you expect luxury rooms, a home baked breakfast, good conversation and a great location. Have now found one in Central London that is completely to my taste. The 1811 Georgian Town house is exactly as it says on the tin - a Regency property that has been metriculouly restored to English Heritage standards. The property is not only grade II listed outside but so all authentic on the inside and why the 1811 Georgian Town House was selected for my business trip. Hats off to our host, I'm not the easiest of guests but she responded to every need without being flustered I'm lactose intolerant and vegetarian, dont like man made fibres and had too much to do in too little time. ...Just returned from staying at Carlton Housewith my wife for our wedding anniversary. This place is fantastic, it really is. Have stayed in York on other occasions and always tend to pay over the odds hoping money brings service. The Carlton although not cheap is fantastic value for money and provides the quality of service expected from the top end hotels. Although in the guest house category I would class this place as a hotel with the added value of that special guest house service.
