The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.

Advantages: It's quite funny, looks nice, some good cast choices.
Disadvantages: A lot of it it isn't funny, some the cast border on useless.

...It would be easy for me to start a review of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy with the words "Don't panic". This would of course be a cheap gag, which is why I won't be doing any such thing. I'll also assure you now that I will not end this review with a comment like "so long and thanks for all the fish". This kind of comment would seem out of place in a film review. The wonderful thing about the writing of Douglas Adams is that he can take ridiculously absurd concepts and make them seem acceptable. It's a shame then that he didn't have all that much to do with this film version. Sure, he is credited as co-writer, and I know he wrote several versions of a screenplay before his death, but what we are left with here is something much less rounded and just too random for it's own good. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Advantages: Some very funny parts, nice cast
Disadvantages: (apparently) Doesn't meet expectations if you've seen prior attempts

Cast Includes: Martin Freeman Arthur Dent Mos Def Ford Prefect Zooey Deschanel Trillian Sam Rockwell Zaphod Beeblebrox Stephen Fry Narrator/The Guide (voice of) Warwick Davis Marvin (voice by Alan Rickman) and others .... Casting is often one point where other reviews claim the movie falls down, but I like the casting. Sam Rockwell is great as bumbling idiot Zaphod and Zooey Deschanel makes a good Trillian. I also really liked that Stephen Fry was the voice of the book, it seemed to fit him well, although was a little strange to hear a british accent among all those Americans. I wasn't a fan of the animation that went with many of the Guide entries though as they seemed to distract away from what was actually being said in voice over. .... But this is just the beginning of his problems. Unknown to Arthur and indeed the rest of the human population of the planet, it seems the Earth itself is scheduled for demolition to make way for a new hyperspace bypass making his initial predicament seem trivial in comparison. Of course being only the third most intelligent species on the planet (dolphins being the second and mice being the first) doesn't help and the dolphins having tried in vain to warn humans of the impending destruction of the planet quietly leave the planet leaving humans to fend for themselves. Still with me? Arthur's best mate, a chap called Ford Prefect turns out not to be human at all. Ford is actually an alien researcher for the 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' a sort of galactic guide book for travellers and he only popped by to update the guide on its entry...

Advantages: Roomy,comfortable, good on motorways

...Hitch hiking is getting to be a dying art. As a driver of a company car I know it is actually against the rules of my company to give them a lift. A shame really. In these days of environmental problems and absence of low cost public transport isn’t it a little sad that transport by thumb power is so frowned upon. Of course safety is a big issue nowadays and picking up strangers can have inherent risk for the hiker and the driver. As TAFKAP might say ‘A Sign Of The Times’. My Guide to the Guide

Advantages: A thrilling, extremely funny, witty and overal excellent book

...Now here is a classic. I have said before that I know of only three books that deserve a 5/5 rating; this by the way is one of them. You must of heard of the late legendary Douglas Adams, and perhaps you've heard a lot about the HitchHiker series in particular. I don't want to spend long on the plot, because I could go on forever. Basically, Arthur Dent is already having a bad morning as the council plan to demolish his house to make way for a new street bypass. To make matters worse, a superior alien race named the Vogons decide to demolish the Earth to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. Arthur luckily manages to escape with help from his friend Ford Prefect, who turns out not to be from Earth at all but from a planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelguese (I think I spelt it right.) Ford and Arthur leave the planet...

Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

Advantages: Should make you laugh
Disadvantages: none, unless you don't like laughing

...Very, VERY funny book by the late Douglas Adams, that I first read after seeing the tv series when I was aged around 13. The book follows the adventures of a human named Arthur Dent, following the destruction of the planet Earth. Prior to the destruction he and an alien friend (Ford Prefect) managed to hitch a lift with a passing space ship. I have since read the other books in the series (The restaurant at the End of the Unniverse, Life the Universe and Everything, and finally, So Long and Thanks For All the Fish), bought the t-shirt, and am looking forward to seeing the movie (which I have read will be made soon) Having re-watched the series on tv recently, I did wonder what I found so good about it when I was 13 (maybe it's because I was 13), but I still find the books VERY funny7...

..."The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". The radio series that spawned pretty much everything; books, records, a TV series, a computer game, several stage shows, a website and a towel. But not, surprisingly, a full length feature film. In these days where everything from books to computer games to theme park rides seem evolve into a film, "the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" never quite made it. That wasn't for the want of trying, of course. Douglas Adams was first offered the chance to make a "Hitchhikers" film back in 1979, and again in 1981. The film rights were actually sold as far back as 1982 to Ivan Reitman, who then decided to make "Ghostbusters" instead. After this fell through, there was an announcement that the film would be made in 1998, which was still no closer to a release in 2001, when Douglas Adams passed away...

...to Life, the Universe and everything (but what is the question!) The book of the Hitchhiker's Guide was written following the radio and televison series and it can truly be said to be an improvement. This time DOuglas Adams really got to grips with the plot and fitted everything together while keeping the spontanety and humour of the original. I read this book after hearing the radio series for the first time and could only be impressed. After reading this first one I went on to read the other four in what Douglas Adams called his triolgy and couldn't fault them. ...There cannot be many books funnier than the Hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy. The book is the first part of a trilogy of 4 or is that 5! It starts out with Arthur Dent who ends up being saved from death by his friend from Betelgeuse(although he did not know his friend was an alien at the time). Arthur survived but the Earth did not because it was demolished to make way for a sort of cosmic bypass. The story then follows Arthur Dent as he travels the Universe looking for the meaning of life and even makes an ultimately futile attempt to save the Earth by going back in time and trying to help Mankinds evolution along a little. This book and the ones that follow have many hilarious moments and also a bit of philosophy and should be required reading by law!...
