...As some people may have noticed, we have a guinea pig. His name is Bradley and I'm a bit biased, but he deserves a review of his own! Guinea pigs make great pets for people of all ages. They are small, portable, friendly, can be kept indoors or out and even house trained if you have lots of time to spare. They require very little maintenance but really do appreciate a daily cuddle or will even sit and listen if you want to have a chat while doing the housework. Guineas make great listeners. Guinea pigs ideally (unless you intend to breed and welcome babies) should be kept in same sex pairs , or larger groups provided you have plenty of space and they are all same sex . They like company, and someone else to squeak at . If you do keep a mixed pair, be aware they breed like rabbits. Speaking of Rabbits, its generally considered not the greatest idea to house them with rabbits for various reasons . Firstly, rabbits do like to stretch and kick, and have quite strong hind legs, whereas guinea pigs have pretty weak bones in general, so could sustain some injury from a rabbits kick . ...Castration in Guinea Pigs is probably the worst thing any owner can do to their little piggy, which I found out the hard way! Risks definately outweigh the benfits and since the uneccessary death of 'Bubbles' my vets has reveiwed the proceedures connected with castration, all owners now must see a vet before hand to discuss the reasons behind the castration and to inform the owner of the real dangers of this operation - in fact the vet does try to avoid this type of castration but due to no prior discussion I was not advised of the risks and they thought as he had bit me it was a case of castrate or PTS which was a total misunderstanding.
