Advantages: It's an excellent album Disadvantages: a-ha should be better than excellent
...I may be first to review this new album by my beloved "Norwegian pop legends" a-ha on Ciao (and rightly so, heh-- see my "epic" earlier a-ha reviews) but it's got a fair old bit of coverage in the UK media for its release this week. The general reception seems to have been very good, apparently someone on Radio 2 made it Album of the Week or something, and the release was mentioned in the BBC's 6Music News podcast. Which was the first and only time I'll probably ever listen to one.
I bought this off amazon.co.uk for £8.98, with free next day shipping because I took the Amazon Prime trial.
As usual for a new album I'm reviewing each track as I listen to it for the first time. So I'm going to get on with it because I can't wait to hear it....

The album opens with pleasingly retro synth...
Advantages: Takes you back Disadvantages: Hard to put down
...One of the wittiest and sharpest books I have read this year has to be "Paddy Clarke HaHaHa" by Roddy Doyle. In his Barrytown trilogy (The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van), Roddy Doyle brilliantly explored family life through various members of the Rabbite family. These three novels combined comedy and sadness to such effect that they established the author as a major new talent. In "Paddy Clarke HaHaHa" Doyle maintains the Barrytown/Dublin setting but focuses on a different family, and the narrative point of view is changed to a boy of ten - Paddy Clarke - growing up fast and discovering new aspects of childhood as each day passes.
Paddy Clarke has a realism which helps to explain Doyle's success. Through this realism the reader can rediscover some of the forgotten tragic and comic areas of childhood.
"Paddy Clarke Ha...
Advantages: Great staff, excellent food and great location Disadvantages: None for us - might not be best for disabled people though
...We wanted to visit Glasgow for the Hogmonay celebrations and also for my 50th Birthday. We chose Rab Ha's on a personal recommendation and we were not disappointed.
It is an excellent establishment. It has four rooms above an excellent pub and restaurant. The food in the restaurant was wonderful with a really good varied menu. The food in the bar was pub food, but damned good pub food. We ate in the restaurant once and the bar twice.
The breakfast was a continental selection (cereal, croissants, toast, fruit, cheese etc) which in my opinion makes a great change from the usual British Breakfast (which in my experience most hotels are pretty crap at anyway, especially the Chain Hotels)
The staff are all fantastic; friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and fun. We have already begun to recommend Rab Ha's to friends and when we return to...
Advantages: Excellent romping cowboy themed music for children under ten. Disadvantages: Won't appeal to all ages but has a pretty long shelf life. Some songs quite repetitive.
...The Happy Gang,s "Yee-Ha" Song Collection, on CD.
Available to buy, live from Happy Gang tours with tapes starting at £6.99 and CD's at £9.99. This is where we bought Cherith's. However, they are available much cheaper in the shop, with tapes from just £2.99 and CD's from £4.99. I 've also seen some on e-bay with a starting price of just £1.
For those of you out there who don't know who or what The Happy Gang are, therefore probably don't have kids, I will tell you! They are a singing sensation made up of two men and a women, much like the Singing Kettle, and originated in Scotland, Edinburgh to be exact.
They tour Scotland and now Englang too. Each stage show is usually themed with anything from a Christmas theme, to a medieval theme to a wild west theme like this one, hence the name - Yee-Ha! Each show is accompanied by...
Advantages: Analogue, Birthright, A Fine Blue line...everything really Disadvantages: Celice...it get's quite annoying
...This is the first album from A-ha for a while, and i think it is brilliant. I was a fan of their 80's music, who couldn't love 'Take On Me'???!! if you're expecting this album to be like that, you will be pleasantly suprised. There are some real gems on this album, including my favourite the lead song 'Analogue'.
1. Celice - I think this is an unusual song to open, as it is the worst song and most annoying one on the album! If you think the album can only go downhill from this, you are very wrong. it gets better and better!
2. Don't Do Me Any Favours - a nice guitar, catchy song. It has very thought provoking lyrics and is a nice summer tune.
3. Cosy Prisons - This is a nice slow tune, with just a piano and acoustic guitar accompanying Morten Harkets voice. he always hits those high notes perfectly, and this doesnt change in...
Advantages: Great way of relaxing/ meditating Disadvantages: Takes a long time to learn properly
...to do with health and spiritual oneness. Any budding Bruce lees or Grasshoppers better find another book or class to join ...HA SO !
The idea of breaking telegraph poles, with a single blow, would have appealed to me as a younger man, but as a more mature individual I am more concerned with things of a spiritual nature. I Have become more civilised and refined since the day I first saw ‘Enter the Dragon’ staring Bruce Lee, at an end of term film show and broke my hand on a fence post on the way home from school. I am in search of things of a more spiritual nature, which Tai Chi provides for me.
BASICS
There are a few pages dedicated to warm up exercises, this is a very important part of Tai Chi, and we seem to spend at least half our time in our one hour class warming up before we attempt any of the actual forms...
Advantages: Intriguing love story, realistic portrayal of China Disadvantages: Depressing
...Introduction
Sadly, there is a dearth of Chinese literature available in English, which means that the English speaking world is missing out on a huge amount of talent from a country that makes up about 25% of the world's population. There's no excuse with this one though; the author is Chinese, but having lived in America for a number of years, has written a book set in China, but in English. This book is set in the 70s and 80s, in the time when China was pulling itself up by its bootstraps after the Cultural Revolution, during which Chairman Mao attempted to further consolidate his power by persecuting scholars. I'm pointing this out, because this book describes a period which many in the West still think is the China of today, which couldn't be further from the truth.

Review of Waiting - Ha Jin
Advantages: Great service, great food and drink, nice atmosphere Disadvantages: The dessert list could be longer
...We were in Sheffield for our anniversary and my mum had recommended this place. I love trying new restaurants so we decided to book a table. Though we didn't need to on Tuesday night, I imagine it's very busy at weekends and on nights when the theatre was big plays on.
+ What is Ha! Ha!? +
It's a bar & canteen but I would say it's more of a casual bar and restaurant. The word canteen reminds me of school and work. There are 26 HA! HA! in the UK. You can find them Bath, Bristol, Brighton, Canterbury, Cardiff, Cheltenham, Colchester, Ealing, Gt. Titchfield Street (London), Guildford, Kingston, Leeds, Liverpool, Muswell Hill, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Reading, Sheffield, Staines, Sutton Coldfield, Victoria, Villiers Street (London), Windsor and York.
Each HA! HA! has its own personality and unique charm...
Advantages: It's a perfectly competent album. Disadvantages: a-ha are capable of being far more than competent.
...Warning: there's probably going to be gratuitous use of the word "epic" in this review. I just can't help it when it comes to Norwegian pop legends a-ha.
This album was released in 2002, and was the follow up to a-ha's epic comeback album, Minor Earth Major Sky, released in 2000. I haven't listened properly to Lifelines for a good few years, after I lent it to someone who later vanished. So when I saw it recently on the ebay for a couple of quid, I had to have it!
For anyone who hasn't read any of my other a-ha reviews, I should explain that I'm a huge fan. Twenty-odd years after Take on Me, a-ha are still going strong (although they briefly split up in the mid 90s they soon got back together) and still have a large fanbase. Somewhat unfortunately for British fans, they are still huge in Europe, Japan and South America, but...
