Halifax Parish Church

...During a recent visit to Halifax the weather was miserable so I took shelter inside the parish church for a short while. The Parish Church of St John the Baptist is one of several churches near to the town centre but it is distinctive because of its square tower and rather black appearance due to centuries of dirt and grime. A Norman church has stood on this spot since at least 1120 and the eastern wall of this church is original but the early Norman church was much smaller than the present church and had a location a little further to the north. Its eastern wall that still survives was actually the exterior wall of the southern end of the original church. A nice country park in West Yorkshire

Advantages: Free access, good quality footpaths, an old mill and boathouse

...Newmillerdam Country Park lies adjacent to the main A61 Barnsley to Wakefield road in West Yorkshire. I have driven past here many times and I have always made a mental note to pay it a visit but it was only very recently that I finally got the chance to stop and have a look around. The country park is located approximately 5 kilometres south of Wakefield and covers an area of 237 acres. It consists of mixed broadleaf woodland centred around a large lake. When I visited here in early November the trees were lovely shades of golden brown. There is a large car park (pay and display) and a footpath goes all of the way around the lake. There are smaller footpaths that extend into the woodland and these are all popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Pontefract Castle, West Yorkshire

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Mainly ruins

...Pontefract Castle lies high above the West Yorkshire Town of Pontefract. Today it is a popular tourist attraction in the area and it is a place that I recently visited with my Brother, who lives nearby. There is not a great deal that remains of this Castle above ground but what sets this place apart from many other similar places that I have visited are its underground tunnels and its incredibly well preserved central Tower, known as the Keep, which once formed the main central structure of the Castle. It is completely free to visit Pontefract Castle and you can also visit the maze of underground tunnels which have been carved out of the rocks. HALIFAX

Advantages: Friendly efficient service

...with the Halifax has blossomed and I now have my joint bank account, a personal loan and a credit card along with savings accounts all with this financial gem. I had feared that, like with the Abbey, things would deteriorate after the Lloyds TSB take-over, but as yet it is business as usual and my brilliant experience of Halifax looks set to continue for a long time yet. I'm more than happy to have all my eggs in this basket! My partner and mother have both switched to Halifax from Alliance&Leicester and Nat West respectively, and have never looked back. A House of Lancaster castle in Yorkshire

Advantages: Free admission. Full of historical information.
Disadvantages: Scant remains. Poor visitor centre.

Ahhh! Yorkshire

Advantages: Can use just one. Authentic taste
Disadvantages: Not really big enough for my liking and not the same as home-made!

Helpful Halifax

Advantages: good staff, easy application process

The staff were very friendly and helpful when I went in and told them what I wanted, and it did not take long for them to set up my account.
