Fairy Frolics (Swallowing Darkness - Laurell K. Hamilton)

Advantages: fun, occasionally
Disadvantages: awful writing

...character that turns up (especially the fey males) is simply very, very boring. The language doesn't exactly soar either, with a plodding, unbelievably wooden dialogue, frequent repetitions that should have been edited out, a surfeit of unnecessary adjectives and and occasional but very grating clash of modes (as a single example: "my mother's emotional ambivalence towards me" doesn't fit with high epic style of the sequence in which it's included, but there are many others). Still, "Swallowing Darkness", while by no means the best in its sub-genre, is not entirely dreadful either. I wasn't tempted to seek out previous books from the series nor other novels by Laurell K. Hamilton (she also authored a long series about Anita Blake, the vampire hunter), but I read this one in two days while recovering from a 'flu and it was fun. As a fantasy...

Hamilton V Alonso

Advantages: Hamilton can now prepare himself for next seasons FI campaign
Disadvantages: Alonso has really shown himself in a poor light and I fear for his future

...Well this is a very interesting debate which I do feel strongly about. I personally think that Alonso is to blame. He was the world champion at the time and should really set the standard. Wanting to have better treatment than Hamilton is ridiculous. They both drove for the same team. They were team-mates and as such should really try and get on. Alonso should have helped Hamilton more with his experience in F1. I do feel that it was the right decision for him to leave. Hamilton has always shown Alonso a lot of respect and has been very mature in all this. Alonso has a lot to learn from Hamilton in that respect.. Alonso needs to take a long hard look at himself and grow up a bit. A true campion should be mature, take critisism, be sporting and unfortunately Alonso has none of these qualities....

...I think that they are both to blame equally although i am british so it was all ALONSO =) however in the whole explosion of lewis hamilton, the ''wonder kid'' versus Alonso we all got too caught up with these two and caught up thinking Mercedes had it in the bag and Raikkonen/ferrari saw this tension and came along exploited it all swooped in and took it leaving Alonso, Hamilton, and mercedes in the dust. just goos to show nothing good can come from ''friendly fire'' next time lets hope Hamilton sees this and uses it to his advantage. and then maybe just maybe next time britain could bring it home for once. instead of losing everything all the gosh darn time. =)...

Disadvantages: none

...I blame Ron Dennis for causing the rift between the two drivers, he's virtually adopted Hamilton since he was a child and doesn't see that a little bit of competition and rivalry between drivers within a team is actually healthy. What he has done though is put a wedge between the two and their sets of engineers. I would not be surprised if other people leave the team following Alonso's departure and the whole spying scandel too. Dennis is simply growing too big for his boots and needs to quit throwing all his toys out of his pram everytime his drivers have a little tiff. Alonso is one of the best drivers there is, Hamilton does not yet have that maturity but it will come in time if he lets it....

...I personally feel that this is a silly argument. I am British, therefore I am going to support Hamilton. Everyone expected Alonso to be on top this season but from out of nowhere Hamilton prooved that he could match and beat Alonso, although he didn't quite manage to win the championship. He is a winner despite this as no-one expected him to do as well as he did. A lot of pressure was put on the poor man because he kept on winning. Alonso should not have been jealous or put out because of this. This is not a crime! I am a firm believer that F1 is becoming too commercial and far too political - if you want to blame someone - blame the teams, the organisers and the FIA (rules and regs) it's making it almost impossible to just race! If there are two drivers in a team then they should both be treated equally and one driver should not...

Was it Hamilton's fault

Advantages: He did screw up monumentally in some races
Disadvantages: Let's be fair, he is a boy amongst men - imagine the pressure.

...Quite frankly, cheaters never prosper. The fact that Mclaren - Mercedes WERE spying on other teams teaches the fact if you cant do the time, don't do the crime. In simple terms, we (I'm British - and gutted) cheated, we got caught. Albeit we were only spying and didn't copy any of the constructions or tactics, the principles remain the same. If you 'only look' at the answer next to you, but don't copy the answer, you can still get done for cheating. So in that respect, we deserved to be stripped of the constructor points and consequently, give up a trophy which we had the aptitude and talent to win anyway. However, as for the Hamilton story, it is the inevitable truth that Britain WILL, always, without a doubt, fall at the last hurdle. In football, we never beat the semi finals (although the John Terry goal WAS a goal back in 2000...

Disadvantages: Made too much out of nothing

...Right with this I feel its all been blown out of proportion. All drivers have rivalries especially at McLaren since they are firm believers in not having team orders unless it is mathematically impossible for one of there drivers not to win the championship. This was there undoing this season as it seems they didnt get this through to alonso. He thought being double world champion would automatically make him number one driver but it didnt. Both drivers got the same materials its just Alonso had been so used to being the superior driver and getting the best support at Renault that it seems to of shocked him that his rookie team mate was getting equal perference to him. ...The Hamiltons seem like just another ordinary family. Since the death of their parents, David has been the breadwinner of the family, caring for twins Wendell and Darlene and younger brother Francis. Francis, however, clearly has some issues with his family and we soon find out exactly what these are - the older three are all involved with the kidnap, torture and death of a series of young people. These people are kept in the basement of whichever house the family are living in at the time (they have to move frequently to avoid being caught out) and killed at will. One of these girls, strung up like a piece of meat, is forced to witness her best friend's death while she is allowed to slowly fade away. But then Francis begins visiting her during the day when his siblings are out and seems to want to help her. Will she be able to convince...
