...There's not much point in harping on about the features of the Handspring Visor Deluxe, other than to say its what you'd expect from a high spec PDA. Of course, you're either smitten with Palm or Windows and thats your choice. I decided to buy mine after seeing someone with a Palm iii in a wallet and thinking "That'll be handy". So I went for the Handspring on the grounds that it's got everything the Palm Vx has got, costs less and has a useful looking expansion slot. At the same time a mate bought the Vx! So far, I've found the machine has impeccable performance - fast, effective, reliable. Everything I'd expect from a £200 piece of kit! But then again, so has my mate's Vx, which, although it cost him an extra £200, is a hell of a lot slimmer and handier for the pocket or wallet... I've fancied a PDA - Personal Digital Assistant - for some time, but they've always been just too expensive for what would really (or so I thought) be more of a toy than an essential bit of kit. Luckily, Handspring has learned from its past mistakes and ordering a Visor is now quick and painless. ----------- Blue devil ----------- The first thing that hit me when I opened the Prism box was that the machine looks COOL. The Prism comes in only one colour -- Handspring calls it ``cobalt blue''. What the pictures on the Handspring website don't show clearly is that the Prism is actually a very nice dark metallic blue. It uses the Palm operating system and can accept input through the hand writing recognition system (Graffiti) or the on screen keyboard. =THE BASICS= The PDA is 125mm long, 75mm wide and 20mm in thickness, including the cover. So much more than a phone

Advantages: convenient, expandable, wonderful device
Disadvantages: high charges for data transfer, some niggles with the software occasionally

...Last week I found a good deal on a Handspring Treo 600 and I had to have it. I haven't been disappointed, it's brilliant. The deal I got meant I get the phone for free although I have to go onto a high tarrif (£45p/m) for four months to achieve this. I'd hesitate to claim that smartphones are necessarily the way of the future - not everybody wants a computer in their pocket. I've often heard people reeling off the features of their new mobile to be met with blank glances, a short silence and the response "But it does make and receive calls, yeah?" An expensive beauty with a short shelf life

Advantages: Gorgeous looks and feel, lovely cradle, USB sync
Disadvantages: Non-upgradeable OS, nasty clip-on Springboard adapter

...The Edge is Handspring's most recent addition to it's Visor range. The machine is obviously built to compete with Palm's slimline Vx. I can't deny that it is a beautiful object, the slimmest PalmOS device currently available. Handspring seem to have shot themselves in the foot here. Their unique selling point for the Visor range is it's expansion potential via the Springboard slot. Unfortunately, there's no space in the Edge for a slot, so you have to clip-on a Springboard adapter (provided), which spoils the sleek lines of the unit, making it look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame (should that be Notre Palm?). Apart from the clip-on Springboard nastiness, the only other negative feature is the lack of a flashable ROM, meaning you're stuck with operating system provided (in this case 3.5). It does unfortunately suffer from OS 3...
