Very Friendly Harpers

Advantages: well-priced, very friendly, good for the social side
Disadvantages: chatty atmosphere can be distracting, not much variety of resistance machines

...I've been a member of Harpers now for about 4 years and after having read the other opinions, I thought I'd offer my opinion from a young lads perspective. The first thing that strikes you about Harpers is how socially active they are and how nice the atmosphere is. I've been to a few in the region and they're all the same. It's definately a gym to go to if you enjoy the social side of it and Harpers regularly have nights out or social events encouraging everyone to come along. Harpers also have good equipment, well-trained staff (if not a little young) and good schemes like Harpers Dollars, where you accumulate credits to get discounts at stores and sports clubs etc. You can also get vouchers through various means which enable you to get money off your membership fees. Harpers also have aerobics and other high intensity workouts...

Ben Harper - Genius!

Happy Harpers

Advantages: Easy to join, staff helpful, good classes, wide range of machines
Disadvantages: As it is at a Leisure centre, there are hundreds of kids in holiday times

...I have been a member of my local Harper's Fitness club for about a year now, and i really have nothing bad to say about either the staff or the facilities. Since I joined, I have changed my programme a few times, and the staff are always ready and willing to help. The induction is the worst bit, but that is everywhere, it's a bit less daunting than anywhere else I have tried. The only fault as I mentioned was the kids in the school holidays, but they're not so bad either, it is an advantage to mothers as they have a well run creche too. The fact that it is run at a leisure centre gives the added advantage of swimming, squash, tennis, football, sauna and steam, sunbeds and a good sized bar along with many other facilities all included in the package. There is a really good atmosphere in the gym, with satellite television music...

The Harpers

Advantages: Greats laughs, a must have
Disadvantages: none that I'm aware of!!

...A must have for all comedy cravers. Probably the funniest comedy sitcom since "Only Fools and Horses", maybe even better than that, but by far the greatest comedy show of recent years. Featuring the Harpers', a realistic look at a typical British family with the added sense of humour. Great for all the family. Featuring, Ben, Susan, Nick, Janey and Michael Harper. In which I find Nick to be extremely humorous, always providing entertainment with his weird and wacky schemes, that usually end up with Ben sorting it out. Ben is another great character playing a very believable role, a dentist who ultimately hates his job, he gets slated for failing to be a doctor but insists it was Susan who prevented him from doing so. He is a great character who finds it hard to chat with his children about just about everything...

All change in the Harper household

Took over Energetics

Advantages: Free stuff
Disadvantages: you get tired (d'oh)

...I've been going to the gym in Ponteland for about a year now. It used to be run by a company called 'energetics' They were quite good but it was too easy to sneak in to the gym without paying. I never did this as I was a member but I think it was unfair how I had to pay £160 for a year when other people got in free. This company was taken over by 'Harpers'. This company is much more proffessional. They offer rewards for regular training sessions. These include t-shirts, water bottles etc. This may not appeal to some people but at least it's something. Also, at the entrance, you have to produce your reciept so no more free entries....

Housewife On Top

Advantages: Colourful Characters
Disadvantages: Story not up to much

I got my copy of the book from my local library, you could perhaps look in your local library for a copy. Failing that, or if you prefer to get a copy that you can keep, a copy can be obtained cheaply enough from ebay or Amazon. What I liked about the book is how it is left - just a bit to your imagination and no mushy ending in sight. A hint has been given to what might happen and you just have to imagine that what's been hinted at is going to happen. This book was published in 2007 by Pan Books. Alison Penton Harper has also written Housewife Down and Housewife Up....

One Book Wonder

Advantages: Highly enjoyable, phenomenally written, deep meanings and messages and great fun
Disadvantages: You may never read anything as good again...

Temporary Money

Advantages: Friendly staff, pretty good pay for the work
Disadvantages: The get busy over the holidays for temp work

...I signed up with Harper Recruitment a couple of summers ago (2004) to get some temp work after A-Levels before heading off to uni. The first job I got was actually working at their offices, so I got to see something of the way they work from the inside. This review will be mainly about how they handle the temp jobs, but they're also a recruitment centre for permanant jobs and have speciality of financial careers. The application process for all of them is pretty much the same but the staff who select applicants each work in a specific field ie. someone will look through applications for permanant work, but not temporary. I'm going to be talking about the Nottingham branch, since I never even saw the Derby one, but some of the same staff work at both and the procedures will be the same, so you can assume Derby will be similiar...
