HASSELBLAD 501 CM

Advantages: Robust,Reliable,Adaptable
Disadvantages: Pricey

...The reputation of Hasselblad has prompted many a photographer-professional and amateur alike-to invest in what is arguably the ultimate medium format system. During my 15 year carrer in professional photography, I have used/owned three market-leading medium format camera models; Bronica (S2A:-yes S2A!) Mamiya(RB67) and an old Hasselblad 500. Of the three, I found the Hasselblad the most comfortable to use.It scores over the Bronica in terms of build quality and compared to the Mamiya it is a great deal easier to handle. In the field of freelance work, I needed a robust camera that would deliver high quality results with the minimum of maintainence, so the Hasselblad 501 was the obvious choice....

Review of Hasselblad 500 Series

Simply unbeatable

Advantages: a classic, you get the best pictures
Disadvantages: expensive

...This is THE classic camera in the medium format. Of course the Rollei flex ? and cord is better known, but the Hasselblad 501 CM is an excellent camera. There is so much to say about this camera that it hardly fits into this space. This brand is like the zippo for lighters. It has existed for ages and its reputation is still at the top. I reckon it is the best medium format camera in the world. The 500 series has been out for a long time and by now all of the parts are interchangeable. There is no need for you to go for something more flash or expensive, despite this being the bottom line for Hasselblad. It does teach you a lot and you could even become professional with this camera. However you have to know what you want from the camera: portraits, landscape etc. It is a good choice, but be aware that moving images will be quite...

Hassle Blad

Advantages: Quality
Disadvantages: Price and limited technology

...Hasselblad the best medium format camera in the world so they say. I used to use one on an everyday basis when I was a photographer in the RAF I admit the camera is a good solid workhorse but it has quite a few drawbacks. Firstly the price, they say quality comes at a price but for that money I would not only want top quality but latest technology. The quality of the lenses is excellent but as far as I am aware the Rollei cameras come with the same or similar lenses although obviously they are in a different mount. The Hasselblad is a real heavyweight this has it’s good and bad points. The camera is solid it will absorb quite alot of heavy knocks(I’ve seen a number of ‘blads’ dropped and still work). The downside of this is that it really is quite a lump to carry round especially using the narrow strap supplied...

Skyscraper height

Advantages: Laugh at physics students
Disadvantages: It's a bit long, but stick with it

...display any noticeable knowledge of physics; to resolve the problem it was decided to call the student in and allow him six minutes in which to verbally provide an answer which showed at least a minimal familiarity with the basic principles of physics. For five minutes the student sat in silence, forehead creased in thought. The arbiter reminded him that time was running out, to which the student replied that he had several extremely relevant answers, but couldn't make up his mind which to use. On being advised to hurry up the student replied as follows: "One, you could take the barometer up to the roof of the skyscraper, drop it over the edge, and measure the time it takes to reach the ground. The height of the building can then be worked out from the formula H =3D 1/2gt squared (height equals half times gravity time squared). But bad...

Arcsoft Panorama Maker 4

Advantages: Easy to use, Affordable, High picture quality
Disadvantages: None identified

...Although I'm a fan of Photoshop for all of my post production work as a wedding photographer, nothing compares to the excellent Panorama Maker from Arcsoft when it comes to stitching sequential images together in a panorama. It's so simple to use and I would challenge anyone to see the join in the final image. My daughter was 7 when she took a series of pictures overlooking Akaroa bay in New Zealand on a small compact digital camera. We used Panorama Maker to stitch them together and I got the resultant image produced on canvas. The picture now hangs by our front door and visitors comment every time they come about the quality of the shot (taken from 5 originals). The intro version can be downloaded freely so effectively you can try before you buy. I did this with version 3 a couple of years ago and now have full versions of 3...

Professional quality at an unbeatable price

Advantages: Build Quality, lenses, Nikon name.
Disadvantages: Menus not intuitive.

...As a professional photographer for nearly 30 years, I expected to be dead and gone long before digital cameras could rival the image quality of 35mm film cameras, let alone my trusty medium format Hasselblad! How happy I am to have been proved wrong. When my £15,000 Hasselblad kit was stolen last year and the insurance wouldn't pay out, I needed an affordable stopgap until funds would allow a more expensive purchase. My 35mm gear has always been Canon, whose cameras have always delighted me. And yet I've always had a feeling in the back of my mind that Nikon lenses were slightly superior. I set off with the intention of buying a Canon 350D , and, in the shop, my heart told me that was the camera for me. My head had other ideas! The build quality of the Nikon and especially the lens included in the kit made my mind up for me...

Through a lens clear, dark..err darker

Advantages: Simplicity and ease of use.
Disadvantages: Costs can rapidly mount up.

...: from 49mm-96mm and focal length greater than 20mm. "X-Pro" system; from 62mm-112mm with focal length greater than 14mm. There are also some rings for specialist type cameras such as Rollei and Hasselblad. There are also some that will attach with a magnetic ring for digital cameras. Here I am quoting their literature. The filters come in 8 different types. 1: coloured. 2: diffraction stars. 3: Centre-spots. 4: Pastels-diffusers. 5: Optical Effects. 6: Graduated. 7: Polarizers. 9: Special Effects. The complete range has 160 different filters. The filters for the "P" system are contained in a plastic box and are themselves made of organic glass (maker's booklet) as are all the filters rather than an optical glass with a coating. The box for the filter is (HxWxD) 110mm x 95mm x 10mm and the filter itself is 82mm x 82mm...

Review of Cokin Filter System

A brilliant camera

Advantages: Oh, so many :) Check the review
Disadvantages: The price...

...300 to a computer where the images can be quickly saved. Also, five cameras of this kind can work in a wireless network, and this means that a user can see the pictures from other cameras. Along with D300, Nikon announced five new objectives :AF-S 14-24mm, f/2.8G ED, AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, AF-S 400mm f/2.8G ED VR, AF-S 500mm f/4G ED VR, AF-S 600mm f/4G ED VR. The single concurrent of Nikon on the High End area of DSLR cameras is Canon. Evidently, we exclude the ultra-professional solutions as Hasselblad, which can be compared only by command. Nikon D300 is making concurrence with 1Ds series from Canon. As for the price, Nikon is superior. D300 has a recommended price of 2.000?, meanwhile Canon offers the EOS-1Ds Mark III for a price around 8.000?. Many professional photographers have their "soul brand" and the new features...
