Advantages: A good selection of Macke's work; not expensive (can be free)
Disadvantages: Better if you understand German

...that Macke met with his friends, among them the poet Apollinaire, the French Cubist artist Robert Delaunay and the German artist Max Ernst. It was here that Macke painted the celebrated mural ?Paradise? with Franz Marc; sadly the original is not displayed here which was the biggest disappointment for me. Looking through the windows, Macke would often paint what he saw beneath him in the lovely gardens or in the bustling streets; it would have been nice to have been able to see more of the works painted here so that you could compare the painting with what can be seen today. The Bonn-Cologne region has a strong link with twentieth century art movements in particular which is reflected in the excellent temporary exhibitions that are staged at the August Macke Haus. Value solution for people planning to stay for a long time

Advantages: Cheap, safe, convenient, good facilities, friendly
Disadvantages: Have to pay in full calendar month installments

...If you are setting up in Vienna and are planning on staying and finding a flat, then I would recommend checking into Haus Döbling, in Gymnasiumstrasse in the 19th. Not only is it cheap, ATS 2700 per month, although you can only book for calendar months, safe, and has all the necessary facilities, but there are other facilities such as a computer room, with internet access, and there are registration periods fortnightly. The price is excellent, as it works out cheaper than any hotels, and is a useful base for you to get flathunting and jobhunting. There are always rooms available, but beware teh check times with the Verwaltung 8-10 (weekdays) in the morning and 2-4 (Monday to Thursday) in the afternoon. The Weinstraße down towards the border with Slovenia is well worth visiting in October, and the atmosphere is very convivial. Up in the north of Steiermark there are some great ski resorts, including Schladming and Haus, and there is cheap skiing available from November - April. In the far west there is the Murtal, a rural idyll, and renound for its Tourism. Rail connections are excellent. Direct trains go from Graz to Vienna every other hour and are nearly always on time, and Leoben, Judenburg, Zeltweg, Knittelfeld, Brück an der Mur, and Murzzuschlag are all on the mainline to Vienna and Italy in the other direction. Styria, in the south of the country is a very diverse province. From the vineyards in the East, to the lakes and valleys of the North and West, as well as ski resorts like Haus and Schladming, it offers everything for the tourist. Graz, Austria's second city is pretty and a great gateway to explore the bordering countries. Finally there is Carinthia, parts of which were formerly part of Slovenia, and which also border Italy.
