DD100 Introduction to Social Science
Advantages: well written, comprehensive course
Disadvantages: you need some self descipline to stick to the timetable
...The Level 1, DD100 course 'Introduction to Social Science - understanding social change' is a well written, comprehensive course, the material supplied covers every aspect so you don't need to buy any course books and as present there is no residential school so it is ideal for anyone who cannot commit two weeks during the summer holidays.
The course, which last 10 months, is split into seven blocks, the first being an introductory block focusing more on giving the student the basic study skills needed to progress with ease and it is therefore suitable for anyone who has been out of education for sometime as the pace in the beginning is quite relaxed. The blocks covered after the introductory block are (1) questioning identity, (2)The natural and the Social, (3) ordering lives, (4)a globalizing world?, (5)Knowledge and the social...

Social Studies with Open University
Advantages: Easy to obtain qualifications
Disadvantages: Time and money
...This is a review of Understanding Social Change from the Open University. This is one of several courses on social science that are provided by the Open University. This is a long review, longer than I normally write but signing up for a ten month course is a more serious use of time and money than buying a book or DVD.
****Overview of the University****
The Open University (OU) is a higher education institution that provides distance learning in the UK. The emphasis of the Open University is upon accessibility and flexibility.
The most obvious sign of its existence is the education programmes that used to run late at night on BBC2. I believe that these have now been discontinued.
Typically when you register with the Open University you receive one or more textbooks. In addition you may receive audiotapes, videotapes, on...

three years of human sciences
Advantages: small, very friendly.
Disadvantages: sometimes need more computers
...I am now about to go into my fourth year in the human science department, based in the wavy top building (yes, it does have a wavy top). It's based close to the union compared to many departments which are over by the library, and also it's nicely next to a pub which serves the local drink 'nasty' (snakebite and black, or diesel to some) and very cheap food (but tasty too).
The department itself is split into three: ergonomics (of which I am in), psychology and human biology (although it is possible to do psychology with ergonomics). The department is small and prides itself on its friendliness. There are quite a few lecturers of all shapes and sizes, but few enough so you get to know them and most of them know your name (not always a good thing though!).
The department has received top marks for teaching for the past few...

Residential social workers are human.
Advantages: You can help the future generation of adults.
Disadvantages: It is hardwork and stressful.
...what does a residential social worker do....
We work within children's residential homes. We provide comprehensive care for children and young people placed within the homes, including physical, emotional and social care. We assist and support the programmes designed to promote the emotional wellbeing and growth of the residents within the home, and if necassary provide support for other homes within our company.
This is a job for someone with lots of patience, who won't get too attached and who has some understanding of childcare. This job can certainly be stressful but it does have it's rewards when you can see a child develop into a well adjusted adult, if you are fortunate enough to see that. Most children in care do not stay in one home for long and are usually placed in somewhere more appropiate, ie; foster care, intensive...

**What Causes Social Anxiety Disorder?**
This is still an open question, as no one knows the exact cause of social anxiety disorder. There is certainly evidence of there being a genetic predisposition to it, however, as a researcher from Harvard University has demonstrated. He studied children from infancy through to early adolescence and found that 10 - 15% of children were irritable infants who become shy, fearful and behaviourally inhibited as toddlers, and then remain cautious, quiet and introverted in their early school years. In adolescence, they had a much higher than expected rate of social anxiety disorder, suggesting people who inherit certain...

Lifting the lid on bad science in the media
Advantages: Fascinating insight into media manipulation and disinformation
Disadvantages: Hard to read at times
...INTRODUCTION
Ms Larsbaby pointed me in the direction of this book which a friend of hers had read. The point of the book seemed to be to debunk myths around science and in particular the "pseudo-science" peddled by groups as diverse as nutritionists and journalists. Famous health stories would be examined in detail and taken apart where appropriate. My interest piqued, I had a look to see what all the fuss was about.
BRAIN GYMS, HOMEOPATHY AND NUTRITION
The author's targets in the book for peddlers of bad science are many and varied. He highlights some well known cases to highlight his point, though is at pains to point out that many other people are just as bad.
The book examines the Brain Gym initiative, promoted in schools as a way to improve children's results, but what is it actually based on? The findings...

Science & Courtney Cox!
Advantages: Excellent soundtrack
Disadvantages: Slighty pants plot.
....
Linville essentially plays the same character he always has done and plays it well. The Misfits themselves are a collection of freaks, weirdo's and Courtney Cox looking almost exactly the same as she does in the Springsteen "Dancing In The Dark" video. The film plays on 80's fears of nuclear weapons and the defence of the free world.
The misfits themselves are Dr. Billy Hayes, a scientist with no powers who is still the leader of the group, Dr. Elvin "El" Lincoln who has the ability to shrink to doll size, Johnny B who is a former rockstar who gained electrical powers after being electrocuted during a gig, Gloria Dinallo (Cox) who has telekinetic powers & Arthur "Beef" Beifneiter aka The Iceman who can freeze things. The movie spawned a show that ran for 17 episodes and its main claim to fame is that it was written by Tim Kring who also...

Disadvantages: An expensive day out and not fully functioning

**Science Mall**
The Science mall; the heart of the centre is split up into 4 floors and is cleverly designed to get kids of all ages (grown-up kids too) interested in science through hands on exploration. There are literally hundreds of exhibitions, grouped neatly and thoughtfully into themed groups i.e. natural science, communication, magnetism, music, mechanical architecture, the human body, robotics, optical illusions etc. Scattered throughout, there are pods which show short films relating to a different theme.
Despite there being an abundance of exhibits throughout, everything is well planned out leaving plenty of room for excited little ones to run amuck while exhausted parents try to keep up.

'I'm Only Human'
Advantages: RnB, Soul, Upbeat tracks, dance tracks, Great tracks, will appeal to wide audience
Disadvantages: None
...'Human' is R&B singer Brandy's fifth album released in 2008. The popular tracks off this album include 'Departed' which was the main single released and 'Long Distance' which is the other single and of course 'Human' by which the album is titled...
First track on the album is the 'Human Interlude' which consists of a short intro to the album which says 'What I feel being a human being is, is having the freedom to be yourself and not being afraid...' This seems to be the basis of the album as it has a lot of emotional thoughts and feelings in it that some may find easy to relate to..
The above track flows into the second: 'The Definition' which is a slow track with good beats and a good soundtrack accompanying good lyrics.
'Warm It Up (With Love) is one of the more outstanding tracks on this album as it has great beats and sounds...

Not Weird Science - Bad Science
Advantages: debunking some of medicine's myths & misinformations, funny read
Disadvantages: man on a mission and with an agenda but who can blame him
...Ben Goldacre is the very outspoken mouthpiece against really rubbish claims made by modern medicine or television charlatans. He is a medical doctor and journalist with a column in the Guardian newspaper with an uncanny bullsh*t detector second to none.
I can?t remember when I first came across his ways of thinking but it must have been when I was looking for an answer to Gillian McKeith, a woman that makes my neck hair stand on end, someone I find appalling to the n-th degree. Lately I have seen him voice his opinion on London?s 6 o?clock news regarding LBC?s Jenni Barnett and her rather stupid musings on the MMR back in January and the other week on Watchdog when he was asked what he thought about some modern detox products.
I bought the ?Bad Science? paperback when I was ordering a number of books from Amazon quite a few months back...
