Psychology I can't relate to
Advantages: It's at Lancaster University
Disadvantages: It's in the Psychology department
...This is only a quick review as I attended Lancaster Uni 3 years ago now and I bet it's changed a little. I can't tell you course info now or ratio of exam to coursework now or much really, but I can give an opinion cos it was probably the best, most informative, most difficult, most exhausting and most fun 3 years of my life!
The Psychology department was out of date - poor computer room, limited research space and time, decaying corridors... The staff ranged in their usefulness - remember it's a university and getting the maximum from your time there is essential - you've only one shot at getting that 2:1 or 1st and some tutors were next to useless whilst others went out of their way to point you in the right direction. Some lecturers put all their material on the intraweb whilst others merely read out their OHTs during the lecture...

Psychology, Simply!
Advantages: easy to read, simple explanations
Disadvantages: a bit dated, could be cheaper
...Chances are that you aren't going to pick up this book unless you are actually interested in psychology, but even if you don't have any previous knowledge this book is a great place to start. Aimed at those taking the subject either at GCSE or just embarking on A-levels I found this book really useful for getting to grips with the basics of topics even after I had started my degree, so it really is useful to people at all levels of knowledge.
-----Looks----
The bright yellow cover is immediately attractive and it instantly stands out on any bookshelf. OK, so it's that annoying academic book sort of a size, but at least it isn't too thick (396 pages) and it does look considerably more interesting than most other text books!
----Contents----
This book is split into seven parts - Biological approach, Behaviourist approch...

Psychologies - an interesting but patchy read
Advantages: Some interesting stuff covered and good journalism
Disadvantages: Some weak articles and repetition
...I subscribed to this after getting one edition free with Red Magazine, who are Psychologies' stable mate. I subscribed for a year or so, but I no longer subscribe. I still occasionally buy it, but I found an edition every month was a little too much navel-gazing for me, to the point where it could end up being a bit of a downer... and I knew that with a new baby I'd be unlikely to have the time to read as many magazines as I previously have.
It has had some really good articles over the months, including pull-out sections on careers and personal development. For me, the biggest disappointment was the monthly column written by Dr Pamela Stephenson (Mrs Billy Connelly). She's apparently a well-respected psycho-sexual counsellor in the US now, but I found her articles facile and irrelevant and not very interesting. It may be that...

It's Got Its Psychologies All Wrong
Advantages: Glossy
Disadvantages: Amateurish Writing
...!), none of the other 7 books have links with psychology, what they've done is just say things about the characters' psychologies. Hello? Every main character in the book has a psychology. Try reviewing some psychological books and try again. I should say that they reviewed an old self-help books. Good. 32 pages in and we have some psychology. Candace Bushnell (author of Sex and the City) is questioned - nothing psychological though, just the same questions they ask people in the back of your free Sunday supplements.
A page on Pierce Brosnan, and what they ask him is the same pop quiz type stuff with the faintest of nods to Freud, "what music do you listen to when you're down?", along with how long he spends in front of a mirror, is the glass half empty or half full (please...) and was he closer to his mum or dad. I wouldn't mind...

Psychology at Reading - a top-rated department
Advantages: Good reputation, wide range of module choices
Disadvantages: some disorganisation for joint honours students
...I studied a joint honours degree in Psychology and Philosophy at the University of Reading from 2004-2007.
Reading Psychology department has a good reputation, which is what initially attracted me to the university. In the latest Teaching Quality Assessment excercise, Reading received an excellence rating of 24 out of 24. In addition to this, Reading was graded as one of the best 5* departments in the Research Assessment excercise. Furthermore, all single and joint honour degree programmes within the department are accredited by the British Psychological Society, allowing graduates elegibility for membership, which is vital for pursuit of any career within the field of Psychology.
During my first year at the university I took the same modules as all single honours Psychology students. These included modules in developmental...

Excellent educational psychology text
Advantages: Detailed and good-value
Disadvantages: A little heavy going at fist, but very helpful
...Frameworks for Practice in Educational Psychology is described on the cover as 'a textbook for trainees and practitioners'. I'd say that this true, but that it is much more aimed at trainees and newly qualified practitioners than at the more experienced end, it's very explanatory and begins with much more basic information than experienced educational psychologists are likely to want or need.
This book was recommended to me by a practising Educational Psychologist who is also a lecturer for trainee Educational Psychologists. It is a must-read for anyone thinking of applying for the Educational Psychology Doctorate as it gives a very comprehensive view of the issues and practice faced on a day-to-day basis in the field.
This book is recommended for sale at £22.99, but is available slightly cheaper new from Amazon (and I assume other...

Psychology of language hard to read
Advantages: Highly detailed and includes a lot of information
Disadvantages: Heavy going and hard to find relevant information
...This book was a set text for the communication module in my degree. I used it quite a bit whilst doing the module, but it's very hard to dip into, and I often struggled to isolate the information I actually needed.
The book is very informative, and covers a broad range of topics, in much more detail than I had expected given the range of topics. The style of writing felt heavy and I found it put me off the subject of the psychology of language (having read other books since I have become much more interested in the area). To me, the book seemed aimed at people whose basic knowledge of the subject was much higher than mine, which was contrary to the book's claim to be an introduction to the area of psychology of language.
One thing that the book was very helpful for was the detailed further reading sections. I seldom used the resources...

A brilliant psychology
Advantages: Good Book
Disadvantages: None
...This book is brilliant if you want a excellent and comprehensive book on an introduction to psychology. I first used this book to complete a project on how the brain works and I found it to be very detailed and it also has great pictures to accompany the text that is written in this book.
This book can be used as a textbook, for courses like GCSE psychology or GNVQ in health and social care. (I personally used it for both, I have also used this book for the HND course that I am presently on).
Back to the book.
At the beginning of the chapters in the book, it gives you a brief description of what is in the chapter, with key words that are highlighted in black. Then the author of the book goes in to that subject in a lot of detail covering all the key words that are bold.
Throughout this book, there are blue highlighted...

Psychology (5th Edition) - Gleitman et al.
Advantages: comprehensive introductory text
Disadvantages: expensive (but textbooks usually are)
...I recently completed the Graduate Conversion Diploma in Psychology, a year long course which leads to graduate registration with the British Psychological Society - an essential requirement for those wishing to pursue a professional qualification as a psychologist. At level 1 (equivalent to 1st year BSc) it was recommended that if we were to shell out money on any book, then this was the one to go for. Psychology textbooks are expensive (rarely under 30 pounds) and, although I did buy some others, I generally managed by using the (luckily for me) well-stocked library. But this book was definitely a good one to have on the shelf at home.
It's an introductory level text - a key accompaniment to the level 1 (or 1st year BSc) curriculum. It's a hefty tome with 19 chapters divided over 5 sections: Action, Cognition, Social Behaviour...

Social Psychology
Advantages: Good Comprehensive Social Psychology Texbook
Disadvantages: None
...This book is brilliant if you want a excellent and comprehensive book on an introduction to social psychology. I first used this book to complete a project on social beliefs and I found it to be very detailed and it also has great pictures to accompany the text that is written in this book.
This book can be used as a textbook, for courses like GCSE or A Level psychology or GNVQ in health and social care. (I personally used it for both, I have also used this book for the HND course that I am presently on). I think this book could also be used for people/ students who want a more detailed introduction into social psychology.
Back to the book.
This book has four main parts, containing 13 chapters and there is a part to this book that contains Modules: Social Psychology Applied.
The book has thirteen chapters, which are:
