By doing, this course you get to come across a lot of different sociology textbooks. I think that this book has to be one of the best sociology textbooks written. This book is aimed at people who have brief or very little knowledge about the subject of sociology. This book can be used as a textbook, for courses like GNVQ Advanced in Health and Social Care, HND disability studies and also courses like GCSE sociology (I personally used it for both, I have also used this book for the HND course that I am presently on). ...I have to say that the sociology course is excellent. There is freedom to choose how your course will be shaped with plenty of options. As well as teaching theory, there is a choice of subjects covering the sociology of the body, the black diaspora, technology and society and many others. So it doesnt end up as just purely a course based on theories by Marx, Weber and Durkhiem. The teaching is excellent and very interesting. The assignments are interesting and diverse, thus the student is in complete control of most of the content. The course is not shoved down your throat by staff....

The best sociology website

Advantages: It offers information for both students and teachers.
Disadvantages: Its not on CIAO

...Sociology central is a great site if you are studying sociology at higher education. It contains everything that a student or a teacher could possibly need for this very interesting subject. As i am studying this subject i have found it very useful to have such a powerful information resource so easily avaliable to me. There are many sections to this site, everything from 'links' to coursework aids. The 'links' have connections to other sociology webstites or to universities around the country which offer good sociology courses. I first used this book to complete a project on how the understanding of disability and I found it to be very detailed and it also has great pictures to accompany the text that is written in this book. He Kills Coppers by Jake Arnott

Advantages: It's a compelling story for those who enjoy bleak themes.
Disadvantages: The multiple voices could be a tad confusing.

...This is a darkly brooding crime novel dominated by a feeling of quiet desperation, a feeling that is generated through the lives of the three lead characters. Jake Arnott does an excellent job of recreating the mood and attitudes of London in 1966, giving the mood an avid, energetic atmosphere. It's an optimistic tone with which to open and one that is squashed pretty quickly. Arnott tells the story through the voices of his three main characters who, although they’re not exactly the good, the bad and the ugly, they each contain a little of those qualities. Frank Taylor is a cop desperate to advance up the ranks of the police force but is all too aware of the corruption within the ranks and can't quite remove himself from the taint; Tony Meehan is a writer, a freelance journalist, but he harbours dark and very disturbing...

...I am just entering senior honours sociology at the University of Edinburgh so I feel qualified to speak about the course, particularly as its not what I applied for but because I found it so interesting I changed! The first year is varied and gives you a general overview of sociology introducing you to various topics including risk. You dont need any previous knowledge. The second year focuses on identity, to include nationalism and education amongst other things. Honours years require you to study theory and methods, and other than that you can choose from a diverse range of courses from feminism to intimate relations (!) The lecturing is excellent and usually fun as well as interesting. the department is small and friendly, and particularly helpful.
