He Kills Coppers by Jake Arnott

Advantages: It's a compelling story for those who enjoy bleak themes.
Disadvantages: The multiple voices could be a tad confusing.

...This is a darkly brooding crime novel dominated by a feeling of quiet desperation, a feeling that is generated through the lives of the three lead characters. Jake Arnott does an excellent job of recreating the mood and attitudes of London in 1966, giving the mood an avid, energetic atmosphere. It's an optimistic tone with which to open and one that is squashed pretty quickly. Arnott tells the story through the voices of his three main characters who, although they’re not exactly the good, the bad and the ugly, they each contain a little of those qualities. Frank Taylor is a cop desperate to advance up the ranks of the police force but is all too aware of the corruption within the ranks and can't quite remove himself from the taint; Tony Meehan is a writer, a freelance journalist, but he harbours dark and very disturbing...

A great mix of fiction and non-fiction

Advantages: Great science and great storytelling
Disadvantages: some harded science readers may find the storys out of place

...I discovered this book while researching my dissertation on mitochondrial genes in human evolution. I have to say that it completely knocked me sideways and have read it numerous times since. The story of our evolution is the probably the greatest story ever told or ever likely to be told. Sykes tells this chapter of the population of Europe, exquisitely mixing science with his own stories of how the seven daughters lived. The mitochondria is a small component of our cells which contains is own DNA. This DNA is much smaller than our own DNA and is largely unchanged through generations.
