Care Assistant jobs.
Advantages: Meet lovely people,rewarding.
Disadvantages: Cleaning up vomit, etc, early mornings, rates of pay.
...Care.
Wages generally go up 0.30p per hour per NVQ or qualifiaction that you gain.
However some qualifications dont benefit you financially but will look good on a C.V.
For example: Infection control
Do you start working straight away?
Not really.
You'll find that your on a probation period, where they watch your work and your suitability to the job, this is usually 3 months long, but to be honest, everyone I've seen come through the doors has loved it so much that they've always been suitable to stay on.
Your generally shown the ropes and will be given light work like serving dinners and helping more able clients to wash and dress etc.
You cannot operate a hoist until you have participated in a MOVING and HANDLING Course.
This is basically to show that you know how to operate a hoist safely, without putting anyone at harm.
A Hoist...

Caring for the elderly in their own homes
Advantages: Getting to know these people and gaining their trust and friendship
Disadvantages: Losing the eople we have cared for
...doing for these people but I have seen the rewards for myself. I cannot do really hard physical care because of my back. But chatting to them and getting to know them, cooking a meal and seeing them eat it all up, making them laugh and hearing all about their lives, has been an amzing experience for me and I have seen the positive effect on my clients too. So many people say to me Why do that kind of job - why not. I get complete job satisfaction, and get paid for it. Not particularly well but you don't do this kind of job just for the money. I am currently attempting an NVQ 2 in Health and Social Care which my company is financing. I must admit at 51 (not that old I know) I am finding it hard to re start to study again after so many years.
We are not medical people, and can only remind clients to take their medication, and it...

Caring for the Elderly
Advantages: A really rewarding job
Disadvantages: when the residents die it`s heartbreaking
...shifts by doing activities with the residents, then at nights the night staff would serve tea/coffee and biscuits, and put the residents to bed.
Staff on duty
There was always a staff nurse on duty during the day, to make sure everything would run smoothly and to administer medications needed, most of the Nurses also done there fair share of work during the day. So with a staff nurse and three care assistants on, looking after 18 residents was`nt to hard.
A rewarding job
This is a really rewarding and worth while job, I really did enjoy working in the nursing home, The reason I left was because I had my kids and the shifts were very long then, but I do plan to go back to this sort of work when my kids are older (hopefully)
The down side
Well the only down side for me was that I got to close to the residents and it broke my...

I Cared enough to Assist
Advantages: To know that you have made a real difference to someones life
Disadvantages: Can be sad, depressing and hard work at times
...volatile environment.
This is the second chapter in the Kazzie Career series! Read..and enjoy.. I hope! Only put the kettle on, this is a 'longie' that's if Ciao don't do a Deano on me!! Ahh paranoia creeping in mow!
(4. Patient has chest pain if she lays on her side for over a year!)
After cleaning and buffing and dusting and being a scrubber ;o) for a few years I decided to take the plunge and apply for the job as a temporary Health Care Assistant on a Care Of The Elderly Ward at one of the local hospitals. It was a 3-month contract and I decided that while I was doing this I would gain some experience and join the nurse ‘bank’.
So that when it did end if I had not secured a more permanent position in the Trust by then I would be able to work as and when I could get shifts with the ‘bank’. This was April 4...

Do you care enough to care?
Advantages: Helping people to stay at home, job satisfaction, puts a smile on peoples faces.
Disadvantages: Can be very long hours and some at very short notice.
...I was just being made redundant from a boring tedious job of picking and packing eggs. I had worked 7 yrs of weekends and bank holidays so I decided that I wanted to try something completely different. It wasn't a hard job but it involved alot of lifting.
A friend told me about her job in a local nursing home and said she thought I ought to give it a go. I thought about what she had told me and decided to give it a try.
Caring is a demanding but rewarding job. It is not a job that just anyone can do to earn some money. People do come into the profession because it pays more than minimum wage but they don't stay long.
It takes a caring person, empathy, compassion, commitment, flexibility and much more to be able to do the job.
I have been in the profession for nearly 7 years as a carer and a manager. I find the work very rewarding...

The ups and downs of life as a care assistant
Advantages: Interacting with the residents
Disadvantages: Poor pay
...I work as a care assistant on the dementia (SRC) unit of a residential care home. I've held my current post for a year now, having started off work in the kitchen.
On the SRC unit we have 12 residents with varying needs, which is why I find it so interesting and rewarding.
There are those who are more aware of their situation and surroundings and only get the odd moment of confusion about what time of day it is, for example, and then there are those who think they are still children and will spend a lot of time looking for their parents. Some experience hallucinations and delusions, thinking their rooms have been bugged or someone is trying to murder them, and others have difficulty communicating - they know what they want to say, but the wrong words come out and us carers have to try and decipher what they are meaning...

K100 – Understanding Health and Social Care
Advantages: Excellent materials, interesting, challenging
Disadvantages: You need to commit to the time involved
...After taking a 30 point course last year (T171, You, Your Computer and the Net) and passing I decided to take the plunge and do a full 60 point Open University course this year. I work in IT and wanted something completely different so I decided to study K100 – Understanding Health and Social Care. This is a Level One course but as a 60 rather than 30 point course entails a lot more time spent studying than my previous course.
I am now more than half way through and feel in a position to pass judgement and my overall view is that it is excellent. It assumes no previous experience of working in a care situation and explains things from first principles. This should mean that if you do work in a care setting you might make faster progress in the first couple of units than I did. However, because it is so wide ranging you will...

Is this A Career for You???
Advantages: Phenomonal job satisfaction.
Disadvantages: can be quite upsetting at times.
...Okay! So; I spent three years of my life in this role; I shall attempt to review it.
A ?Health Care Assistant? or H.C.A. as its more commonly known (this title has now in most places changed to ?Health Care Support Worker?) is someone who works within a hospital in a ?multi disciplinary team?.
Health Care Assistant?s probably have more contact with patients than any other worker in the hospital.
There are a variety of duties expected of a H.C.A including;
*assisting patients with activities of daily living i.e. washing; Eating; Drinking; Mobility etc where necessary and dependant on individual patients needs.
*Monitoring vital sign?s etc, mainly blood pressure; pulse; respirations; blood sugars, temperature, post operative observations. (Other types of monitoring is required occasionally; such as eye observations; pedal pulses...

The backbone of the NHS
Advantages: Good pay and prospects, Educational
Disadvantages: Stressful, early mornings and late nights
...The job role of a Health Care Assistant or Health Care Support worker as they are now known is a role like no other. Challenging to many and rewarding to all, working as part of a Hospital team can really open your eyes to the world around you. As a HCA your duties are to provide support and assistance to Health care professionals with nursing, domestic and general duties. Working as part of a varied and multidisciplinary team, the HCA position is a vital one. In many cases you will provide the first line of care for hospitalised patients. This helps senior nurses and team members to perform more specialised tasks. This job is a brilliant introduction to the healthcare industry. Nursing students and even Medical students work as HCA’s in order to increase their patient care and nursing skills.
Well that’s the job...

the life and times of a HCA
Advantages: job satisfaction
Disadvantages: hard work
...As most people may have guessed by my user name that I am a nurse. I am currently a ?D? grade staff nurse on a orthopaedic trauma ward in a busy hospital.
Prior to getting this far I worked as a care assistant in an elderly mentally ill nursing home and a Health Care Assistant (HCA) on a urology unit and on the nurse bank, which meant working from ward to ward (medical, surgical, orthopaedic, elderly, gynaecological, ENT, outpatients the list goes on..) all before starting my nurse training and now qualifying (all last).
It is the role of the HCA that I am reviewing,
A HCA is a valued member of the Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) who is trained at there own level NVQ 1 & 2. Also additional training can be completed such as catheterization male and female, cannulation, taking blood. Become apart of the link nurse team dealing...
